House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said he wont call Congress back into session early to fast-track emergency funding for hurricane victims, arguing that theres no rush since it takes a while to calculate the actual damages.
Well be back in session immediately after the election, he said in an interview with Fox News Sunday.
Thats 30 days from now. The thing about these hurricanes and disasters of this magnitude is it takes a while to calculate the actual damages, and the states are going to need some time to do that, he continued.
Members of Congress left Capitol Hill late last month to focus on campaigning in their home states. They are scheduled to return on Nov. 12, a week after Election Day.
President Joe Biden had asked lawmakers to hasten the approval of about $1.6 billion in federal funding towards the Small Business Administrations disaster loan program, which Biden said will run out of funding in weeks.

(7,046 posts)How stupid can one Congressman be? But his district isn't on the coast, so it's better to save money than spend it on people whose home being destroyed is their own fault for living where a hurricane can hit it.

This is, as Richard Pryor's aphorism goes, "the logical conclusion of the logic". When politicians go around mouthing thought-terminating clichés like "community = communism" or quoting Thatcher's line "there is no such thing as society" like it's wisdom of the ages...well, this is eventually what you get!

Mike says no hurry to reconvene during a national crisis? Screw that - do to XO and explain why the adults had to deal with the situation. The voters may just have a real revelation about the Republican Problem Creators. They never never solve problems, they can only create and exacerbate them.

(28,493 posts)let the next hurricane landfall be at least as powerful as Helene and Milton each. Hoping for one with the strength of either of those two. And then another similar hurricane a week later. And tell of damage could be done to a city as far inland as Asheville and I'm guessing Johnson's district is actually closer to the ocean than the NC city.
And all the rest of us can just shake our heads, say tsk, tsk, and point out that he doesn't believe in federal aid. Good luck to his state.

(22,590 posts)His hometown, Shreveport, is only a little over 300 miles from the Gulf coast, and parts of his district are much closer than that.
But wishing a crushingly powerful hurricane on an entire region populated by millions of people in order to punish him (much as he may deserve that punishment) seems rather extreme to me.
I'd be fine with him experiencing negative consequences for his general shitheelery, but I'd prefer consequences that are focused specifically on him and don't include catastrophic collateral damage.
Wishing natural disasters on millions of people? No, thank you.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(28,493 posts)However, Mike Johnson doesn't care if people not in his district are in a crushingly powerful hurricane.
I like to think I'm simply holding D's to the same standards R's hold, which is to insult everyone they possibly can, and not give a flying fuck if others need federal aid for anything.
ShazzieB
(22,590 posts)I prefer to hold myself and other D's to a higher standard than Republicans set for themselves, rather than sink to their level. But I do understand wanting to give them a taste of their own medicine.
