Top 10 Conservative Idiots #17-9: I'm Not Shipping Up To Boston Edition

Top 10 Conservative Idiots #17-9: I'm Not Shipping Up To Boston Edition

Welcome back to the Top 10 Conservative Idiots! Yoooooooooooooooooooooo!!! What’s up, University Of Colorado, how are you all doing? Yes, you’re usually used to seeing us downtown! But we’re here tonight of course as part of our partnership with the Brewer’s Association and the Great American Beer Festival! And Denver has a beer major, too! You guys know how to get your drink on here! Anyway, we’ve got a great show for you tonight – a lot of idiocy to get to! But first we got to talk about the state of the program. Yes, we’re packing it in in December, only because we got to take a break from all of the absolutely batshit crazy stuff happening in the world. It’s too much! And yes, our Halloween Spooktacular got canceled in Georgia, but we’re moving it to Michigan! Yes, our annual Spooktacular will now be taking place at the University Of Michigan. And it will be our last Top 10 before the 2024 election, and you know what? You don’t need our shit during this time. We’ll reconvene after the election, how does that sound? Great! Hopefully the American people do the right thing and flush the Orange Turd down the sewer he came from for good! Do we have time for the thing? Of course we do, it’s my show! So I don’t know who here follows music, but there’s been a lot of festivals and concerts this year lately. Particularly I want to focus on our good friends NOFX. Yes, they’ve had quite the run and they called it quits with an absolutely epic sendoff at the cruise terminal in San Pedro, California this last weekend. So yeah, can we give it up for NOFX? How about that! But during their grand finale of the decline, there was a lot of controversy surrounding Pennywise guitarist Fletcher Dragge. Yes, if you’re familiar with the punk rock scene at all, you’ve probably seen Fletcher on stage destroying equipment at one point or another. Yeah it’s his thing. And who are we to argue with that? But it did set off a firestorm of controversy on the interwebs. Oh wait, Fletcher is here? Oh no! That stage prop guitar is being destroyed! And there goes another one! Back, Fletcher! Back! Back, we say!!! Should we have Fletcher destroy our stuff at the end of the season? Hey, let us know in the comments! OK that’s enough of the intro, we have a lot of idiocy to get to! But first – John Oliver is back and he delves into the subject of traffic stops:

So where do we begin this week? We’ve got a lot of idiocy to catch up on! Well the number one slot this week is painfully obvious and that’s the guy who we inexplicably used to call president, Donald J. Trump (1), and he’s in a whole heap of trouble surrounding the latest bombshell that dropped courtesy of Jack Smith, and let’s say that our October surprise came early this year! The second slot this week is less obvious – in Los Angeles, a group of white supremacists (2) got caught trafficking drugs, particularly fentanyl, across the Mexican border. And let’s just say that Sean Hannity and Fox News are going to have a hard time spinning this one! In the third slot this week is the briefly lived Gulf Coast Dock Worker strike (3) – which was settled by competence and stellar leadership before it became a problem, but that didn’t stop people from panic hoarding! Taking the fourth slot this week is Mike Johnson (4). Yes, MAGA Mike just discussed the batshit crazy and downright evil possibility of withholding federal aid to Georgia and North Carolina until after the election. Want to lose your job too? That’s a good way to do it! In the number 5 slot is a new We’re Gonna Die (5)! Just when you think the dust might be settled from COVID, guess what? We’ve got bird flu everyone! That’s right – cases of H5N1 have surfaced in Central California, so are we all gonna die from it? Probably. In the number 6 slot this week is of course our weekly visit to the Holy Church Of The Top 10 in “Holy Shit” (6), and this week, we’re celebrating 20 years of Mel Gibson’s magnum opus “The Passion Of The Christ” the Holy Shit way, and guess what, my fair audience? There’s a sequel coming! Jesus 2: Electric Boogaloo! In the number 7 slot this week is a new Beating A Dead Horse (7) and last week, you might have heard about the guy in Texas who bought a “signed” Taylor Swift guitar only to smash and destroy it. But guess what? The story is even weirder when you go down the rabbit hole! Taking the 8th slot this week is of course our weekly venture into the never-ending void of online tin foil hat nuttery in Conspiracy Corner (8). And this week – an Arizona judge finally threw the book at notorious election denier and Mike Lindell crony Tina Peters, and whoa baby, is it glorious! In the number 9 (NEIN!!!) slot this week is a new I Need A Drink (9) and we’re going to need plenty of IPAs to discuss one of my personal favorite movies – Men In Black and that one time Will Smith let out an epic fart while on the set. And whew, we need some drinks! Finally this week in our weekly look at all of the ongoing election insanity in Road To The White House (10), we’re going to take a look at the VP debate and hopefully smash JD Vance’s lie-o-meter, which was going crazy! And to cap things off, our good friends 311 are joining us with some new material! Buy their new album Full Bloom or you are no friend of this program! Enjoy! And as always, don’t forget the key!

Trump vs Jack Smith
[br]
[br]

It has been a banner week for that guy who we inexplicably used to call president, Donald J Trump, and whew it’s going to take the sharpest knife in the drawer to cut through all the madness! And don’t think we’re done just yet. Yes, we still haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of what exactly happened on January 6th, 2021. The day that MAGA attempted to take over the government and overturn a free and fair election. And we probably will never hear exactly what happened because there’s a metric shit ton of reports out there from various conflicting sources. But one man is making it clearer – and that is Jack Smith. Yes, Trump’s worst nightmare is making it rain like a college aged male throwing around dollar bills at a strip club. Ha ha ha ha ha ha… that’s quite a strange but certainly fitting image there! But that aside, there is a lot to unpack from this latest takedown. Probably one of the biggest allegations is that he spent the afternoon scrolling that platform formerly known as Twitter that he got banned from that day for threatening violence.

Much of Smith’s brief focused on Trump’s state of mind in the weeks leading up to the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. Smith described a slew of conversations suggesting that the then-president knew his claims of election fraud were spurious. And Smith laid out evidence that Trump’s sole objective was to stay in power — not, as he and his lawyers have claimed, to exercise legitimate authority over election integrity.

Prosecutors said they would prove at trial that Trump and his allies often made up statistics about voter fraud “from whole cloth.” For example, Trump and allies alleged that 36,000 noncitizens had cast ballots in Arizona, changing the figure to “a few hundred thousand” five days later, eventually revising it back to “bare minimum … 40 or 50,000,” then to 32,000 and back up to the original number of 36,000.

Prosecutors, who had more access to telephone records and emails than the congressional committee that investigated Jan. 6, allege that Trump spoke to ally Steve Bannon by phone on Jan. 5 less than two hours before Bannon issued a prescient and provocative prediction on his War Room podcast that “all hell is going to break loose” on Jan. 6.

Trump sidelined his campaign lawyers on Nov. 13, 2020, with Bannon informing another Trump campaign adviser — and alleged co-conspirator — that Trump had replaced them in the pecking order with Rudy Giuliani. Bannon said he told Trump that without Giuliani in charge, “this thing is over.” “Trump is in to the end,” Bannon added, according to prosecutors.

Yes, Trump knew it was over, but gave it the ol’ college try. But what kind of fucked up “college try” involves trying to overthrow the government? So with that, Mr. Smith is fighting against Elon Musk – the current owner of “X” to get access to Trump’s messages and private messages. They took that fight to SCOTUS, and even Trump’s Fox News MAGA SCOTUS was like “Hell no, we’re not touching this one with a 1,000 foot pole!”. Yeah, I can imagine Clarence Thomas in that image! Of course, one definitely cannot unsee that! So it does look like we’re on our own with this one. But, needless to say, these are some incredibly damning allegations.

The Supreme Court said Monday it will not step into a dispute involving special counsel Jack Smith's efforts to obtain records from former President Donald Trump's account on Twitter, now known as X, and keep the social media company from telling him about the demand for the information.

In turning away the appeal from X, the court leaves intact a lower court decision that upheld a nondisclosure order that said Smith's request for Trump's social media records must be kept secret for six months.

The justices have sidestepped another high-profile legal battle arising from the special counsel's prosecution of the former president for allegedly attempting to subvert the peaceful transfer of power after the 2020 election.

The court's conservative majority ruled in July that Trump is entitled to some immunity from criminal charges stemming from official acts taken while he was president. Proceedings in the case are continuing before a federal district court in Washington, which is now weighing whether Smith's slimmed-down allegations in the case against Trump comply with the Supreme Court's opinion.

You know here’s the thing – we’ve had two incumbent presidents in the last 40 years who have lost their reelection battle – Jimmy Carter and George HW Bush. And you know what they did after they lost? They fucked off. Hell, Jimmy Carter proved to be the better man by being one of the greatest human beings in existence. George Bush fucked off too. And you know what? Trump doesn’t hold a candle to either of these two. So will this change anything in the election? Probably not. The one thing we do know this close to the election is that Trump’s popularity has completely plateaued. He hasn’t gained any new followers, but he hasn’t lost any. So yeah this most likely won’t.

Jack Smith's 165-page evidence filing in Donald Trump's election fraud case is a "big win" for the former president's legal team, an attorney has said.

Speaking as co-host of Stay Tuned With Preet Bharara, former prosecutor Joyce Vance said that Trump now knows who is going to testify against him and the layout of the case.

"This brief puts Trump's team in a better position to respond, to make their own immunity arguments, and to prepare their case," Vance said.

She also said that the October 2 filing will not affect Trump's chances in the presidential election. She was responding to CNN Senior Legal Analyst, former federal and state prosecutor, Elie Honig, who wrote in his legal blog that Smith's October 2 filing was a "cheap shot," generating headlines and potentially influencing voters and members of the jury pool.

Vance said: "This is, in fact, a win for Trump. And I guarantee you that nobody in the public who spent their time reading 165 pages in detail didn't have their mind already made up about this election, right? The broad contours here, they are well known. This is not impacting the election."

Gee, why am I not surprised in the least that the MAGA cult has gone into full blown dear leader ass kissing mode? Like move on, nothing to see here, please disperse! And don’t worry, next week, we’ll have a full report about Trump??s newest ties to premiere Russian warlord Vladimir Putin. But of course, the bony MAGA king himself is screaming “ELECTION INTERFERENCE!!”. But is it really election interference from 4 years ago? There really is no low they won’t sink to with this group. However, with 28 days to go, we’re still wondering what the bottom line for MAGA will be. Will Jack Smith finally be the one to stop them? Only time will tell!

Former President Donald Trump and his campaign have accused special counsel Jack Smith of violating long-standing Justice Department norms by including new revelations about his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss in a filing released Wednesday.

In reality, a federal judge, not Smith, made the decision to release the filing to the public.

Trump on Thursday called it a "weaponization of government" to release the filing just a month before Election Day, alleging that Smith and federal law enforcement officials were improperly influencing a presidential election.

It's true that the Justice Department typically abides by an informal 60-day “quiet period” before an election — meaning it avoids taking discretionary action that could be seen as influencing voters. The new disclosures from the special counsel's office, however, were made in an ongoing criminal case at the order of a federal judge, Tanya Chutkan, who ultimately made the decision to release the redacted filing Wednesday.

LA Fentanyl Bust
[br]
[br]

You know that feeling you get when the bad guys’ talking points are instantly refuted by some actual breaking news? That’s kind of how we felt when we first heard the news that a major neo-Nazi gang in Los Angeles got busted running fentanyl across the border to Mexico. Wait, what? Yes, you heard that right. Drugs aren’t coming over the border. Drugs are being delivered *TO* the border. And it’s not millions of illegals. It’s less than 100 neo-Nazi scumbags. All doing the dirty work of a mega billionaire news mogul who thinks that America is his personal property. But speaking of Fox News, I personally love it when their talking points get taken down a few pegs. And this is definitely one of the times that this happened. But hey, when it’s “millions of illegals”, that don’t exist other than in the minds of deranged Fox News hosts that are mouthpieces for the billionaire criminal class, you don’t hear the end of it. They will go on 24 hours a day about it. 68 neo Nazis get caught actually trafficking drugs? You get nothing but crickets. And yes, the reason why you don’t hear about it, is that is Fox News’ viewer base – these are their people. But this bust is definitely a victory, but the war is still going on, and we have a long way to go, so let’s celebrate any victory we can get!

Federal authorities have charged 68 members of a California-based white supremist street gang with crimes in an attempt to dismantle the organisation.

At least 42 members of the SFV Peckerwoods, which is based in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles County, have been arrested so far.

The 76-count indictment includes charges of racketeering activity, drug trafficking – including fentanyl – possessing illegal firearms, and engaging in fraudulent Covid-19 benefits and loan fraud.

The US justice department says the Peckerwoods gang takes orders at times from the Aryan Brotherhood, a neo-Nazi gang based in California's prisons, and has an alliance with the Mexican Mafia prison gang, which controls most Latino street gangs in California.

Thank you Nelson! Yes, so it’s not “millions of illegals” who are running incredibly dangerous drugs to and from the border. It’s neo Nazi gang members! So what’s taking them so long to prosecute all of these scumbags? Maybe they’re waiting for an invitation to bust them all like when Harvey Dent took down the Falcone crime family in the Dark Knight? Well, personally here, we say “whatever it takes” to bust white supremacist scumbags. And yes, we are on the side of “fuck all neo Nazis, white supremacists, and fascists” in case you were wondering.

Federal and local law enforcement officials announced court filings and arrests related to an organized crime ring in Los Angeles run by a neo-Nazi group affiliated with the Aryan Brotherhood.

U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada said that the bust being announced Wednesday morning is one of the “largest takedowns in the history of the Department of Justice of a neo-Nazi, white supremacist, violent extremist organization.”

A total of 68 people were indicted as part of the “Peckerwood gang,” Estrada confirmed. Of the 68, a total of 42 are in custody.

“The Peckerwoods are involved in a wide variety of criminal activity, from drug trafficking to fraud offenses to firearms offenses, violence and identity theft,” Estrada said. “But what truly distinguishes them is their hate and animosity to ethnic and religious minorities.”

The Peckerwoods are based in the San Fernando Valley, Estrada confirmed, and get their name from a derogatory term used against poor white people and Caucasians in the prison system.

Members of the group often have tattoos with the letters “SFV,” which, according to Estrada, means both “San Fernando Valley” and “Searching For Victims.”

But here’s the thing that is insane is this refutes nearly 15 years of Fox News talking points about “millions of illegals” coming across the border with dangerous drugs. It’s not them we should be worried about, it’s these guys. And considering what they stand for, we can only imagine that there’s one presidential candidate who shares their viewpoints. Yeah, him. But, needless to say, this is just the beginning. Who knows how many more there are? And who knows where the drugs are coming from and how they can be stopped? Well, expect as the weeks unfold that we’ll be learning a lot about this story. Just be certain not to tune in to Fox.

A judge sentenced two men to prison time after they were found with 1 million fentanyl pills last year, a massive drug bust in Los Angeles County which federal prosecutors say started with a deal brokered in Mexico.

For several months, between September 2022 and March 2023, the two defendants and another suspect all worked together to distribute thousands of fentanyl pills which they were selling for 75 cents each, according to federal prosecutors. They were ultimately found with 1,016,270 fentanyl pills — which weighed about 241 pounds — which they had planned to sell.

Fentanyl is described by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency as 100 times more potent than morphine, 50 times more potent than heroin and the main driver behind a record-high number of drug-related deaths of Americans in recent years. In Southern California, like much of the U.S., more and more county-level prosecutors are pursuing murder charges against accused dealers tied to fentanyl deaths.

"Fentanyl is the nation's greatest and most urgent drug threat," states the DEA's 2024 National Drug Threat Assessment.

Dockworker Strike

[br]
[br]

Corporate greed. But more importantly, extreme corporate greed and excessive wealth concentrated in the hands of an elite few. Its’ the reason why we cannot have nice things in the United States Of America. As if a once in a lifetime apocalyptic hurricane pummeling the Gulf Coast wasn’t bad enough, just up north from there in Charleston, South Carolina, we experienced a very brief supply chain disruption with word that non-unionized dock workers were beginning to strike. Causing massive panic hoarding fever to set in. Boy, we live in fun times, don’t we? And for the sake of this piece, why don’t we use one of my favorite bands – the Dropkick Murphys, and call this piece “I’m *NOT* Shipping Up To Boston”. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!! Yes, you probably saw footage on the news of what seemed like a repeat of the pre-COVID times when panic hoarders were looting store shelves for everything from toilet paper to bottled water to Kraft mac and cheese! Oh no, how will we ever enjoy our cheesy powdered goodness during a disaster? I kid, I kid! Come on, it helps to have a sense of humor right now. But anyway, the panic hoarding of 2024 isn’t nearly as destructive as it was in 2020 when the entire world got disrupted. Like most things, it definitely helps to cut through all of the extreme media fearmongering.

Toilet paper shortages in stores across America are giving folks nightmarish reminders of the pandemic era. But the lack of toilet paper isn’t a direct result of a major port strike Tuesday. It’s because of panic buying.

Reports of shortages filled social media Tuesday, showing empty shelves where toilet paper and, to a lesser extent, paper towels were supposed to be.

“They cleaned out the toilet paper at my local Walmart in Virginia. Toilet paper hoarding 2.0!,” wrote one person in a post on X, along with a photo of empty shelves.

“Shelves at Costco & Target running low or out of paper towels in Monmouth County NJ,” posted another X user. “Seeing people buying TP & water too in reax to port strike. Costco employee told me they were sold out of TP/paper towels this am.”

But the strike at ports from Maine to Texas will have absolutely zero impact on the supply of these products.
https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/02/business/toilet-paper-shortages-port-strike/index.html

Oh come on, people! Stop your rabbling! But here’s the thing – there’s two things that you need to know. The first is that – despite what our billionaire criminal overlords tell you, unions are indeed a good thing. You know what? Because we’re not all billionaires! We can’t print money the way that Larry Ellison or Elon Musk can. Nope. And most of the time us average Joe’s can’t even catch a break when it comes to negotiations. So when the fearmongering panic from the mainstream media first began to set in last week, where does one turn? And I don’t mean throwing your flat screen TV or computer monitor out the window. But a raging hurricane not seen in over 60 years is not the time to be settling one’s differences via the picket line, is it? No.

A strike by 45,000 dockworkers halting shipments at U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast ports entered its second day on Wednesday with no negotiations currently scheduled between the two sides, sources told Reuters.
The lack of progress is raising concerns among those reliant on shipments that the disruption could be prolonged.
The International Longshoremen's Association union strike has blocked goods from food to automobile shipments across dozens of ports from Maine to Texas, which analysts warn will cost the economy billions of dollars a day.
President Joe Biden’s administration has put pressure on U.S. port employers to raise their offer to secure a deal with dockworkers to end the strike.
"They made incredible profits, over 800% profit since the pandemic, and the owners are making tens of millions of dollars from this," Biden told reporters on Wednesday. "It's time for them to sit at the table and get this strike done."
https://www.reuters.com/world/us/white-house-sides-with-union-dockworker-strike-enters-second-day-2024-10-02/

So two questions here – the first is how much profit is too much profit? And the second question is when does that trickle down money start actually trickling down to us? Which further says that trickle down economics is a big, fat, steaming load of grade A bullshit. But this is also why elections truly matter at every single level. Because, since we still have president Joseph R. Biden at the helm and not that other bloviating orange asshole, he’ll still fight for us. And what could have been a category 5 shit storm combining the strike with the hurricane, has since trickled down to a class 3 shit sprinkling. Yeah, we’ll let you picture that one!

Aided by intense pressure from senior Biden administration officials, the shipping companies, represented by the U.S. Maritime Alliance, significantly increased the raise they were offering the dockworkers to 62% from their previous offer of a 50% boost in pay. The International Longshoremen’s Association, the dockworkers’ union, was seeking a 77% raise, but it accepted the new offer, which will be phased in over six years.

The agreement labor leaders and management reached will suspend the strike until at least Jan. 15, 2025, allowing more time for additional collective bargaining and negotiations.

Talks over other contested conditions, including the adoption of more automation, will continue until then.

President Joe Biden applauded both sides. He thanked the union and management “for acting patriotically to reopen our ports and ensure the availability of critical supplies for Hurricane Helene recovery and rebuilding.”
https://theconversation.com/dockworkers-pause-strike-after-biden-administrations-appeal-to-patriotism-hits-the-mark-240592

Yes, thank you president Biden! And we can already see the talking heads on Fox News seething that they didn’t get their precious victory. Well guess what? Boo fucking hoo! You guys had the chance and you failed absolutely miserably! Also, Fox News does not, and will never own the White House, and the government is not Rupert Murdoch’s plaything, OK? We’re also sick and tired of the could have would have should have bullshit coming from you guys. We don’t care what Trump would have done in this situation, we only care what’s happening now. So stop it with that shit, OK? It’s not funny, nor will it ever be funny.

An executive representing ports where tens of thousands of workers went on strike this week made a series of critical and crude remarks about Joe Biden, tied Kamala Harris to concerns about over-taxation, and appeared to endorse a rightwing conspiracy theory. David Adam, chairman and chief executive of the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), attacked prominent Democrats in a string of social media posts uncovered by the Guardian.

It comes after about 45,000 dockworkers at ports along the US east and Gulf coasts walked off the job – the first such strike since 1977 – as part of a dispute between the USMX and the International Longshoremen’s Association over pay and automation.

…A month ago, when a LinkedIn user suggested that “everything Biden has touched in the past is turning to shit!”, Adam replied: “The runny kind….” It was part of a discussion about how Biden’s student-debt relief plan was being held up in the courts. In another comment on the thread, Adam wrote: “If ya can’t get an American Democrat to pay what they borrrowed [sic], how you gonna get a California illegal immigrant to pay back their $150K loan the CA Dems are offering?”

…Just a few weeks ago, Adam commented on a meme that claimed the US has a 48% fuel tax, which was debunked in 2022 by Politifact, when the same post was shared in Canada with the same claim. He seemed to suggest responsibility lay with the Biden administration and Harris, however, writing: “Someone ask Kamala to explain why this is such and is she gonna fix it?!”

Hurricane Helene & Federal Aid
[br]
[br]

Well, the absolute worst house in United States history continues to embarrass itself again. Fuck you, Fox News, for foisting this nightmare on us. Our government is not Rupert Murdoch’s personal property, so quit acting like it is. Get out and stay out. So what warranted that, you might ask? We’re in the middle of a nightmare natural disaster that’s pummeling the Gulf Coast. Yes, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. All states under the iron grip of Fox News and GOP propaganda. And it’s literally killing them. And can we also say that the conspiracy theory bullshit is getting way out of hand? That apparently doesn’t matter to the Fox News MAGA Infowars Conspiracy Qongress. Because their latest political stunt – if this doesn’t get your blood boiling, I’m not sure what else will. But again, there’s nothing surprising with this group. There’s no low they won’t sink to. But there’s no denying that conspiracy theories and misinformation are killing this country. In more ways than just the rising death tolls and the destruction that is happening. That shit is poison for you. Stay away from it! And yes, like most things, it’s the reason why we can’t have nice things in this country.

The U.S. government’s top disaster relief official said Sunday that false claims and conspiracy theories about the federal response to Hurricane Helene — spread most prominently by Donald Trump — are “demoralizing” aid workers and creating fear in people who need recovery assistance.

“It’s frankly ridiculous, and just plain false. This kind of rhetoric is not helpful to people,” said Deanne Criswell, who leads the Federal Emergency Management Agency. “It’s really a shame that we’re putting politics ahead of helping people, and that’s what we’re here to do. We have had the complete support of the state,” she said, referring to North Carolina.

Republicans, led by the former president, have helped foster a frenzy of misinformation over the past week among the communities most devastated by Helene, promoting a number of false claims, including that Washington is intentionally withholding aid to people in Republican areas.

Trump accused FEMA of spending all its money to help immigrants who are in the United States illegally, while other critics assert that the government spends too much on Israel, Ukraine and other foreign countries.

Yeah BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Yeah look, MAGA chuckle fucks – people are dying because of the misinformation and conspiracy theories floating out there. You want to play those games? You and your stupid talk show host bosses will be at the unemployment lines soon enough! God, this crap is really making me angry. And also the reason for us to take a long mental health break at the end of this insane election cycle. But, my friends, while the MAGA chuckle fucks continue to wreak all the havoc they were elected to do, there are still a few independent thoughts out there. Don’t worry, Hannity will bring them all in line tomorrow.

A Republican congressman representing areas devastated by Hurricane Helene has implicitly rebuked members of his own party, including Donald Trump, by issuing a scorching rebuttal of misinformation and conspiracy theories spread by the former US president and his supporters about the storm and the government’s response.

Chuck Edwards, the member for North Carolina’s 11th district, contradicted criticism from Trump and others of the Biden administration’s handling of the disaster by voicing praise for “a level of support that is unmatched by most any other disaster nationwide”.

He also condemned “outrageous rumors”, which he said were hampering attempts to aid badly affected communities in his constituency.

The missive, in the form of a press release headlined “Debunking Helene Response Myths” and posted on Edwards’s official congressional website, followed warnings from Deanne Criswell, the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema) that the glut of misinformation surrounding the relief operation was the worst she had ever seen.

Seriously, when you have one party that’s morphing into a suicidal misinformation death cult out for absolute power right before our very eyes, this is the kind of shit you have to put up with. A once in a century pandemic didn’t get them to shut up, and now this bullshit with a literal once in a century massive hurricane. And we’re not at all phased or shocked by this. It’s totally on brand for Rupert Murdoch and Alex Jones’ people. You know what’s truly insane is that these are the people who say that we shouldn’t play politics with disasters. Well guess who’s playing politics with disasters? That’s right – the MAGA conspiracy theory chuckle fuck crowd. What? No! That would be a truly terrible hour of a Saturday morning variety show! Ha ha ha ha ha! Gotta love our graphics department! Anyway…

Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday called former President Donald Trump “incredibly irresponsible” for spreading falsehoods about the federal response to Hurricane Helene 's destruction, offering especially sharp words as a new storm bears down on Florida with just weeks until Election Day.

"There’s a lot of mis- and disinformation being pushed out there by the former president about what is available, particularly to the survivors of Helene,” Harris told reporters before boarding Air Force Two to fly to New York. “It’s extraordinarily irresponsible. It’s about him. It’s not about you.”

Helene has killed more than 220 people in six states, and Category 5 Hurricane Milton is on a path toward Florida's Gulf Coast.

Trump has made a series of false claims in the wake of Helene, including saying incorrectly that the federal government is intentionally withholding aid to Republican disaster victims. He also falsely claimed the Federal Emergency Management Agency had run out of money because all of it had gone to programs for immigrants in the country illegally.

Oh please, kindly go fuck right the fuck off with that bullshit, Marjorie Shit For Brains. Nobody controls the weather. Alex Jones controls your thoughts, though. Yes, we are definitely planning on doing a Conspiracy Corner piece about this next week. But holy shit, this is stupid. Like jaw-droppingly, stunningly stupid. So stupid you really wonder how they put their pants on in the morning stupid. I can’t even. But we can’t overlook the fact that internet misinformation is being weaponized, and it’s literally killing people. In fact large parts of this disaster probably won’t ever fully recover until we kick these MAGA chuckle fucks to the curb and flush them down the sewer where they belong. Man I really need a drink right now.

The storm hit two swing states just a month before a close election, making criticisms about the response a tempting political line of attack.

On X, the top results for “Helene” have millions of views but are not always reliable.

"'$2.4 billion aid to Ukraine' vs 'No more aid for Hurricane Helene' - 3 days apart" pro-Trump account End Wokeness wrote alongside video clips of President Biden speaking on two occasions. The post received over 5 million views.

The text misrepresents one of the Biden videos. In it, Biden responds "no" when asked if more federal resources will be directed to disaster relief and says that local governments have yet to ask for what has already been allocated. The video also shows Biden saying the federal government had already preplanned hurricane relief even before states had asked for disaster aid.

Former President Donald Trump claimed without evidence that Democrats were withholding aid from Republican areas. Trump also falsely claimed that Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp had not been able to speak to Biden, even though both confirmed they had spoken to one another.

We’re All Gonna Die
[br]
[br]

Hey everyone, guess what? We’re all gonna die! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOO. WOOOOOO. WOOO. WOO. So what’s going to kill us all this week, you might ask? Well, I answer you – you think we’re just now getting over the COVID pandemic that nearly shut down the whole world? Well guess what? We’ve got bird flu! That’s right – bird flu has been spotted in Central California. That’s right – Fresno, Tulare, Bakersfield. So could it be as bad as COVID? That’s a huge grey area that the CDC is currently exploring. So if you recall your COVID vocabulary, you might remember the phrase “zoonotic”. It’s what happens when viruses jump from animals to humans. It’s how COVID started and it’s how H5N1 is starting. Yes, a few cases here and there is not enough to shut down the entire planet again. And the same idiots who think that the hurricane is a DOD weather controlled machine are also the same people who refuse to get vaccinated because they think there’s a tracker in the vaccines. Uh, yeah that’s not the vaccine, that’s your phone! But nobody tell them. Anyway bird flu is here and the latest strain looks rather nasty. But who’s gonna alert the anti-vaxxers on this one?

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) on October 5 reported a potential third human H5 avian influenza infection in a worker who had contact with sick cows at a Central Valley farm.

Confirmation testing is underway at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If confirmed, the illness would mark the third recent H5 infection in a California dairy worker.

The CDPH said there is no known link to the two recent cases, and that all three patients had contact with infected animals at three different farms. Like the first two cases, the most recent probable patient had mild symptoms that included conjunctivitis. None of the patients were hospitalized.

If confirmed by the CDC, the latest illness would push the nation’s human H5 case count since the first of the year to 17. All but one—which involves a patient from Missouri—have been connected to contact with sick cows or poultry.
https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/avian-influenza-bird-flu/california-probes-likely-h5-infection-another-dairy-worker

No we’re not all gonna die. Anti-vaxxers, maybe. But seriously, it’s been 4 years since the COVID outbreak and at this point, if they don’t learn their lesson the hard way, then it’s entirely on them at this point. But here’s where things could get really fucked up with H5N1 – there’s been apparently no known animal exposure, at least that has been discovered where the epicenter of the outbreak was. So the question is – could we all die from this latest disease? Again like literally every outbreak, the odds of it becoming a full blown pandemic are about 50/50. And of course, since we all know that the number one killer of Americans is misinformation, expect if it ever did become a pandemic that things will be infinitely worse than COVID.

Here’s the latest news about a global outbreak of H5N1 bird flu that started in 2020, and recently spread among cattle in U.S. states and marine mammals across the world, which health officials are closely monitoring and experts are concerned the virus could mutate and eventually spread to more humans, where it has proven rare but deadly.

The first case of the bird flu with “no immediate known animal exposure” was confirmed in a Missouri resident who was hospitalized, recovered and had no known work-related exposure to sick animals, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services reported the infection was detected as part of the state’s standard flu surveillance system, unlike the targeted H5N1 surveillance program that has typically surveyed farm workers.

August 30Three dairies in central California detected the bird flu virus among its herds and have been quarantined, according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture, which noted there are no human bird flu cases related to the incident, as well as no threat to the milk and food supply.

August 29The July bird flu outbreaks in two Colorado poultry facilities were the country’s first known human cluster of cases caused by poultry—infections were just one-off in the past—though there was no reported human-to-human transmission, according to a new report by the CDC.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/ariannajohnson/2024/09/06/bird-flu-h5n1-explained-cdc-reports-first-case-with-no-known-animal-exposure/

No we’re not all gonna die, just yet. You don’t know! You don’t know! But you might be thinking, since it has been discovered in yet more people, could It lead to a full blown pandemic? Well there’s a lot of factors that would have to be involved before that happened. With COVID we knew that it was a new virus that nobody had seen before. We also knew that it had a ridiculously high transmission rate, and we knew that there wasn’t a cure for it. Before anyone panics, bird flu has been around since the early 2000s, and there are cures and vaccines available for it. So to combat H5N1, there will be a new vaccine that will have to be made, among other things.

On September 6, the Missouri health department announced it had recently identified a new human case of bird flu. This case was different from the other 15 human cases previously identified in the US in that the patient denied having contact with animals, raising the possibility that the illness had already begun spreading among humans.

On September 13, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quietly released new information about the case: There were two more possible bird flu infections in people who’d had close contact with the first patient. According to a CDC website update, one was a household contact of the patient who got sick with similar symptoms on the same day as the case; they weren’t tested and have since recovered. The second case was in a health care worker who developed mild symptoms and tested negative for flu.

The CDC said in a press briefing only the day before, on September 12, that to their knowledge, none of the patient’s close household contacts had gotten sick. The confusing messaging has led to disquiet about the lack of transparency in US public health communications.

It was unclear why the CDC did not share the information initially: The Missouri health department has not requested the CDC’s assistance with its investigation of the case, and states typically determine what patient information they share with the CDC during outbreaks.

No, not yet. Anyway, here’s where panic mode could eventually set in. Previous instances of bird flu have all been pretty much confined to one area or another. This time around, there’s cases popping up all over the world. And yes, the WHO has sounded the alarm that this could be, you know, bad, but there’s lots of factors to settle before things go from bad to worse. But of course, like all things, putting the conspiracy theory idiots in charge of places that could do something about is an extremely terrible idea, among other things. But again, before you set into full blown panic mode, you might want to do some reading, because there’s some places that H5N1 hasn’t touched yet. So are all going to die from this thing? Maybe, maybe not.

Australia and the rest of Oceania are the last regions free of the highly pathogenic strain of bird flu that has caused mass mortality in birds across the world and a massive outbreak in dairy cattle in the United States. Why animals in the southern region have so far escaped infection is a mystery, but scientists have several theories.

For one, Australia is geographically isolated and doesn’t import live poultry, says Frank Wong, a virologist at the CSIRO Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness in Geelong. Many of the countries’ birds are endemic and do not migrate to regions where the virus is spreading.

But the virus’s arrival in Australia is “a matter of when, not if”, says Michelle Wille, a virologist at the Centre for Pathogen Genomics at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Wille thinks that long-distance migratory shorebirds and seabirds that come from Siberia and Alaska through southeast Asia to Australia are most likely to carry the virus into the country.

Holy Shit
[br]
[br]

Gather around my fair brothers and sisters! It’s time to take a seat in the pew and pass the collection plate, for the Holy Church Of The Top 10 has convened and it’s time to remind you that the holiest among us are the most full of:

My fair congregation! Please be seated! You know, last week I pointed out that the movie theater industry is a dying industry, which is why it’s not shocking that movies pandering to hyper conservative Christian are very slowly making their way into the box office. But one movie coming next year hopes to resurrect box offices. Ah, see what I did there? And that wasn’t AI, by the way. That was a thought of my own concoction! Anyway, yes, my friends, there is one movie that is hoping to save the box office this next year. And that is… JAYSUS! Yes, JAYSUS himself is coming to save the box office. Meanwhile, the movie that started the Christian movie revolution is celebrating its’ 20th anniversary this year. Can you believe that it’s been 20 whole years since the Passion Of The Christ was released? Yeah it’s truly insane how time flies, doesn’t it? Well it’s no secret that Christians love them some blood and guts, which is maybe why they worship the unholy Dark One! I of course speak of a man so foul, so profane and disgusting that his name DARE NOT be spoken in my church! So yes, we do come on 20 years of the Passion, folks!

As we've seen in recent years, horror remains a recipe for success at the box office. Truthfully, it's been that way for decades. Another trend that has emerged in the aftermath of the pandemic is faith-based cinema breaking out in theaters, with the controversial "Sound of Freedom" leading the way. To that end, controversy can sometimes fuel massive ticket sales. 20 years ago, one movie combined every single one of those elements to deliver the biggest R-rated movie of all time. That movie was "The Passion of the Christ."

Directed by Mel Gibson, the film focuses on the last 12 hours of in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, played by James Caviezel. The film begins with Jesus praying after the Last Supper before being betrayed by Judas Iscariot. He is then arrested and taken within the city walls of Jerusalem where leaders of the Pharisees confront him with accusations of blasphemy, resulting in condemning him to death.

"Critics who have a problem with me don't really have a problem with me in this film. They have a problem with the four Gospels. That's where their problem is," Gibson said in his interview with Diane Sawyer in 2006 addressing the controversies that erupted over the film's violence and offensive depiction of Jewish people. Whatever problems critics had with the filmmaker or his film, it hardly mattered in the end.

Yes, so twenty years o f The Passion! Which is pretty crazy when you think about it. I mean when that movie first debuted, it was at the height of the political divide in this country with the Bush administration – and yes, that is a president whose name we can speak in these sacred halls! And of course, the violence in the film proved that today’s modern Christians love them some blood, guts, gore and the fire and brimstone level of Christianity! Yes, my friends, some good old fashioned repentance is always on the table! But is the movie really a miracle as some are calling it? I guess if that’s what your definition of “miracle” is.

In the powerful movie, The Passion of the Christ, chronicling the end of Christ’s life, Jim Caviezel delivers a nuanced, moody performance that doesn’t deny Jesus’ humanity. It helped that Caviezel is a true believer. A devout Catholic, he went to confession and received Holy Communion every day while shooting Passion in Italy.

The 2004 work, directed and co-written by Braveheart and Lethal Weapon star Mel Gibson, brings the Stations of the Cross — 14 scenes depicting His final 12 hours — to the big screen in excruciating detail. The movie harrowingly shows the Agony in the Garden of Olives, His betrayal by Judas Iscariot, His arrest and torture, the carrying of the cross, and His crucifixion and death.

Key moments in Jesus’ life, from the Last Supper to the Sermon on the Mount, and biblical events like Peter’s denial of Christ are seen throughout. It ends with a brief glimpse of the Resurrection. (The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, a sequel, is reportedly starting production in 2024.)

The film was a box office hit and became the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2004, despite the dialogue being spoken entirely in reconstructed Aramaic, Hebrew, and Latin (with English subtitles). Gibson’s camera never shies away from the savagery and suffering of Jesus’ final hours, lingering on the brutal torture in all its painful, graphic detail.
https://www.tvinsider.com/1128204/the-passion-of-the-christ-20th-anniversary-jim-caviezel-jesus/

But it’s not rock and roll, it’s JAYSUS! And how do you celebrate 20 years of your movie about your lord and savior? With a sequel, of course! Because what good is a multi-billion dollar grossing movie in Hollywood without a sequel? Because you can literally sequalize anything in the movie industry if you put your mind to it! Yes, could this be the start of the Passion-Verse? Jesus! Jesus 2: The Resurrection, Jesus 3: The Awakening! Then there’s an Armageddon movie, a Revelations movie… come on, Hollywood, let’s get on it! And it would certainly be a better franchise than those Left Behind books, am I right?

It can be difficult to grasp, from the vantage point of 20 years later, just how massive Mel Gibson’s The Passion Of The Christ was back in 2004. Releasing in theaters in February, and then sticking around for more than two months (to say nothing of its various recuts and re-releases), the film made more than $600 million at the box office, quickly becoming the most successful R-rated movie of all time. (A title it only lost this past summer, as Deadpool & Wolverine found at least one way they were, in fact, bigger than Jesus.) And now, it’s apparently coming back.

This is per Consequence, reporting on a piece printed in Italpress, which states that Gibson is reportedly in Malta at the moment, holding conversations with Maltese authorities about using the island nation as a filming location for a new movie: The Passion Of The Christ: Resurrection, with an eye toward beginning filming in 2025.

Neither Gibson, nor star Jim Caviezel, who’s set to return for the sequel, have been shy about their ambitions to get The Passion Of The Christ 2 made. Gibson initially announced the project back in 2016, and Caviezel made his own enthusiasm for the return clear in 2018, saying he expected the movie to be “The biggest film in history.” Gibson even gave a glimpse at plot details in 2022, when he suggested that his script for the movie was less grounded than the first film, which got a lot of its appeal from being a straightforward—if brutally violent—depiction of the story of Christ. “That’s kind of getting a little sci-fi out there,” Gibson noted of his scripts, saying the film will partially take place in “the past and in other realms.”

Yes, but sequels are one thing – time, my friends, is another. You know, for years, Passion held the record for the highest grossing R rated movie of all time. But this year, it was dethroned! By whom, you might ask? Our good friend, Deadpool! Yes, my friends, Deadpool & Wolverine is now the highest grossing movie of all time! Does this mean that Deadpool is bigger than Jesus? Well I’m definitely not going to answer that question with a 100 foot pole. But it is interesting to see that many R rated movies have come and gone over the last 20 years, but none can hold a candle to GAWD! Except of course for Deadpool, that is!

Deadpool & Wolverine recently passed The Passion of the Christ at the domestic box office, making it the biggest R-rated movie of all-time in North America. This broken record inspired people on social media to become broken records, repeating the same joke that nothing could be more indicative of American culture. Is that true? Maybe. But, what, exactly does it indicate?

The implied joke is that the United States really loves Christianity and really loves superhero movies, maybe even more. That — like a country musician putting odes to the Good Lord and Grey Goose on the same album — we love the sacred and the profane in equal measure. The Passion is what Americans feel like they should like; Deadpool is what they actually like. Deadpool is partying on Saturday night, The Passion is dutifully heading to church on Sunday morning. And that hyperviolence — whether inflicted via crucifixion or, well, actually, there's a crucifixion in Deadpool 3, too — is the one thing we will consistently turn out to see.

All of that is true. American culture is defined by its relationship to violence — sometimes active, sometimes passive. Our government is defined by inaction, which prevents anyone from doing anything about the tens of thousands of people dying from gun violence each year. Our primary mode of transportation is uniquely violent, too, with car accidents causing more than 40,000 deaths in 2023. We have nearly 800 military bases around the world, and it's rare for the U.S. not to be at war. We incarcerate more people than any other country in the world. The US is a violent country, and it makes sense that our defining R-rated movies would be extremely violent to match.

Beating A Dead Horse: Chappelle Roan’s “Endorsement”…?
[br]
[br]

Look, people, the presidential election is a mere 26 days away, and we can’t be fighting over stupid, petty bullshit anymore! The choice is simple – freedom or a Christian nationalism authoritarian nightmare hellscape. I know which way I’m voting, and I’m sure that everyone in the audience also does, otherwise they wouldn’t be here! Anyway, three weeks ago, the world’s most famous and wildly popular pop star Taylor Swift stunned the country when she decided to endorse Kamala Harris. That of course broke Donald Trump’s brain, but it also broke the brains of just about every Fox News host, who spent the last three weeks denouncing Taylor Swift’s endorsement and saying things like “Who gives a fuck about what an out of touch billionaire celebrity thinks?”. HEY ASSHOLES! YOU LITERALLY ELECTED A BILLIONAIRE CELEBRITY PRESIDENT, and you’re going to do it again! Fucking hell. Anyway, another pop celebrity has thrown her hat into the ring – but unlike Taylor, this one was a huge swing and a miss. Yes, I’m talking about Cappell Roan, whose viral hit debut album “The Rise & Fall Of A Midwest Housewife”, has so far refused to say whether or not she’ll endorse Harris, and the results have split social media users straight down the middle.

Chappell Roan has said that her issues with the US government are behind her unwillingness to endorse a presidential candidate in the 2024 US election.

The “Pink Pony Club” singer is one of the breakthrough pop stars of 2024 and is currently touring the UK, with her final two shows to take place at London’s Brixton Academy tonight (Friday 20 September) and tomorrow.

In recent months, her song “Femininomenon” has been co-opted by Kamala Harris’s campaign, as other celebrities including Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, Chris Rock, Ben Stiller and Meryl Streep throw their support behind the Democratic candidate.

Speaking to The Guardian, Roan, 26, said she doesn’t feel pressured to endorse any one candidate.

“I have so many issues with our government in every way,” she said. “There are so many things that I would want to change. So I don’t feel pressured to endorse someone.
https://www.the-independent.com/arts-entertainment/music/news/chappell-roan-kamala-harris-endorsement-us-election-b2616087.html

Yeah, seriously, what the fuck!!! Come on, at this point how the hell can you not know what Donald Trump stands for? He has a playbook to turn this country into a literal banana republic, like Hungary, and another term of this, and the United States will turn into an authoritarian nightmare hellscape like Turkmenistan! And trust us, you don’t want that! But when you’re a viral celebrity like Chappell Roan, how the hell can you make such a divisive statement like “oh both sides do it”? No, there’s just one side that does it, and that’s the side that has 3 24/7 news networks, broadcast TV, social media, and literally every single AM radio station and newspaper OP ed section in their back pocket! Yes, I’m of course talking about that one!

Chappell Roan is making her position as clear as possible, once and for all. In a new TikTok video posted Wednesday (Sept. 25), the “Good Luck, Babe!” singer offered one final explanation for her stance on the upcoming presidential election.

In the clip, Roan says while she will be voting for Kamala Harris to become the next president of the United States, she will not endorse the vice president since she does not support some of her policies. “I’m voting for f–king Kamala,” she said in her video. “But I’m not settling for what has been offered, because that’s questionable.”

The new clip comes after a quote Roan gave to The Guardian went viral, in which she said that she didn’t “feel pressured” to endorse a candidate in the 2024 election because “there’s problems on both sides.” Many of the singer’s fans criticized her take, saying that former president Donald Trump and the Republican Party posed a much greater threat to the country than Harris or the Democrats.

While Roan addressed the lack of context in the quote in a TikTok posted on Tuesday evening (Sept. 24), she started her new video saying that she “woke up … to people skewing it even more” and made it abundantly clear why she would not endorse any candidate.
https://www.billboard.com/culture/politics/chappell-roan-vote-kamala-harris-not-endorse-1235783903/

Yes, that is a very good question! You might be wondering why we’re spending so much time about this, and the answer is – EVERY fucking vote counts! If a few pop stars’ opinions are what it takes to sway popular opinion away from fascist bullshit, then guess what? We’re all ears! And unlike our program, Chappell Roan has fans, and a media presence! So yeah her opinion matters. But you really can’t say this is a win for critical thinking. Because for one – there’s one side that really thinks critically, and the other one wants to end the Department Of Education! We’ll let you guess which side that is, and it shouldn’t really take long! But come on, Chappell, make the damn call already!

No, I’m not voting for Trump and yes, I will always question those in power,” Chappell Roan said in a recent TikTok video clarifying why she is not stumping for Kamala Harris in the forthcoming US presidential election. As she had explained to the Guardian last week, she doesn’t “feel pressured to endorse anyone” – having previously denounced the Biden-Harris administration’s failure to robustly defend queer rights against hundreds of anti-LGBTQ+ bills tabled by Republicans, and their ongoing support for Israel during the assault on Gaza that has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians.

She followed up with another video on Wednesday: “Obviously fuck the policies of the right,” she said, while also castigating what she called “some of the left’s completely transphobic and completely genocidal views”. She said she was voting for Harris, “but I’m not settling for what has been offered … this is not me playing both sides. This is me questioning both sides.”

It’s refreshing to hear a pop star talk about politics with conviction and nuance. If only her recent comments had been received that way online. The year’s breakout pop star went viral this weekend when a popular X account that aggregates pop culture titbits cherrypicked a quote from Roan’s Guardian interview in which she said of Democrats and Republicans: “there’s problems on both sides”.
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/sep/25/chappell-roan-isnt-endorsing-kamala-harris-shes-taking-a-stand-for-critical-thinking-instead

Uh… excuse me??? We’re the genocidal and transphobic ones? Have you seen Project 2025? Anything at all? Have you listened to Fox News day in and day out like we have:? This is a statement so profoundly stupid I don’t even know where to begin. But of course, like any current pop star – whether it’s Taylor Swift or Chappell Roan or Charlie XCX, you can be certain that they have an insanely rabid fanbase. So why does this matter? Because young people of America listen to people like this and they actually can have an affect on one’s worldview. So whether or not you agree with any of these people, your kids probably do. So when talking about voting in the election, just don’t lead with “How do you do, fellow kids?”.

Roan’s conservative critics are a lost cause—she was never going to win them over, not by dressing up as the Statue of Liberty at this summer’s Gov Ball in New York, smoking a giant fake joint, and screaming about how she had no plans to accept an invitation to the White House. But now, there are plenty of Harris voters and liberals who are angry with her perfectly reasonable but slightly wrinkled position that no government, right now, deserves her loud championship. Roan has said repeatedly that she plans on voting for Harris, even if it does appear to be a decision she’s making while plugging her nose—something that plenty of disillusioned young voters can relate to. Yes, Trump needs to be stopped in his efforts to return to power, as Democrats have exhorted through this past year, but Roan is already doing her civic part; that doesn’t mean she can’t approach this country’s terrible two-party system with some nuance and well-deserved fury.

It’s been a long few months of Roan brushing up against controversy after controversy, as her frankness and refusal to tolerate disrespect have rubbed some people the wrong way. But Roan, despite what many strangers on the internet are suggesting, does not need a PR person to handle this minicrisis for her. Her fury is by design. Who is Roan if not the result of a deeply chaotic turn of the century? Her life, and the lives of other young people like her, have been guided by 9/11, the demonization of brown and Black people, the continued politicization of the female body, an encouraging swell and then terrifying clampdown around LGBTQ+ rights, the death of Roe v. Wade, Donald Trump, the pandemic, school shooting lockdown measures from childhood to adulthood, and the horror of 40,000 Palestinians killed by Israel since last October. In the very few elections she’s been able to vote in since she turned 18, she’s seen the inertia of the Democratic Party and Biden’s administration. She’s seen abortion clinics shut down and trans youth persecuted. Conspiracy Corner
[br]
[br]

Welcome back to our segment that attempts to explain the unexplainable, Conspiracy Corner! Of course conspiracies exist when people simply don’t want to read the article past the headlines and just flat out make shit up. We of course are coming to you live from our underground doomsday shelter from deep within the New Mexico badlands. Undisclosed location, of course! Let me just adjust my trusty tin foil hat for maximum government interference. Ah, there we go! They are trying to read yours and my thoughts, after all! You know, last week, we brought you the CEO of Mein Pillow, Mike Lindell… ha ha ha ha ha… lowering the prices of his shoddy merchandise to the low, low price of $14.88. To which he replied, “no, that’s not a Nazi dog whistle!”. Well, this week, he’s back in the news again because his long-time election denying co-conspirator crony, and the Harley Quinn to his Joker, Tina Peters is finally getting her just deserts. Which is a rather lengthy prison sentence! Yes, this is a truly classic example of play stupid games, win stupid prizes!

Tina Peters, a former Colorado county clerk and supporter of former President Donald Trump, was sentenced to nine years in prison this week in connection to a voting system data scheme.

In August, Peters was found guilty of seven of 10 charges in a 2021 breach of Colorado's election system. Peters, 68, was convicted of three counts of attempting to influence a public official; conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation; official misconduct; violation of duty; and failure to comply with an order by the secretary of state.

The jury acquitted her on three other charges: conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, criminal impersonation and identity theft. The trial, which began July 30 with jury selection in Colorado's solidly Republican Mesa County, where Trump secured nearly 63 percent of the vote in 2020, spanned eight days of testimony. It centered on events from May 2021, when Peters was accused of orchestrating a breach of election security equipment.

Peters became the first election official charged in connection with a security breach tied to baseless conspiracy theories that widespread voter fraud cost Trump a second term. Peters was convicted for allowing a county security card to be misused, granting access to the Mesa County election system to an individual connected to MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell. She was also found guilty of deceiving other officials about the man's identity.

Thank you Nelson! Yes, attempting to fuck with election outcomes the way Tina Peters and many countless others that follow the ways of Trump have done – and failed – is truly a spectacular thing to watch. Attempting to fuck with the election results is like going to Vegas and betting against the house – and in this case, the house always wins! But Tina Peters isn’t the first conspiracy theorist to get indicted for screwing with the election results. Remember the plight of the Cyber Ninjas (see: Idiots #10-12 )? Yes, when you think you’ve seen the bottom of the crazy barrel, I can assure you, my friends that barrel goes way deeper than you would ever think! Yes, phrasing! Boom!

A judge ripped into a Colorado county clerk for her crimes and lies before sentencing her Thursday to nine years behind bars for a data-breach scheme spawned from the rampant false claims about voting machine fraud in the 2020 presidential race.

District Judge Matthew Barrett told former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters -- after earlier sparring with her for continuing to press discredited claims about rigged voting machines -- that she never took her job seriously.

"I am convinced you would do it all over again if you could. You're as defiant as any defendant this court has ever seen," Barrett told her in handing down the sentence. "You are no hero. You abused your position and you're a charlatan."

Jurors found Peters guilty in August for allowing a man to misuse a security card to access to the Mesa County election system and for being deceptive about that person's identity.

This goes to show you two things – A) the difference between us who actually live in reality, and MAGA, who live in conspiracy theory fantasy land. And B) – why it matters to fucking vote at every single fucking level! As if your life depends on it! So imagine if another judge were in power and Tina Peters got off scot-free and got a get out of jail free card, free to wreak as much havoc as she wants in the 2024 election. Yeah, you can’t do it, can you? Because that would be a literal nightmare scenario. And Trump is the kind of psychopath who will let these crooks out of jail if he ever somehow manages to worm his way back to the White House, that you can be sure of!

Election-conspiracy theorist Tina Peters has been convicted of tampering with voting machines in Mesa County, Colorado, in the aftermath of the 2020 election. On Monday, Peters was found guilty of seven charges related to her efforts to grant unauthorized individuals access to county voting machines in order to prove false claims that the election had been fraudulently stolen from Donald Trump.

In March, Peters pleaded not guilty to 10 criminal charges, including seven felonies, in connection to a scheme to use her position as Mesa County clerk to transfer voting data from the machines to allies of former President Trump. She resigned from her role as Mesa County clerk in 2023.

Peters’ sentencing is scheduled to take place on Oct. 3.

“This community has suffered greatly from the dishonesty, lack of transparency, and refusal of Ms. Peters to take accountability,” Mesa County District Attorney Daniel P. Rubinstein said in response to the verdict. “No single elected official, or even branch of government, is above the law or should be allowed to act without those checks and balances.”

Yeah that’s the really fucked up thing about this is, is how convinced MAGA is that they think they’re above the law, because that’s the bullshit that Fox, AM radio, and social media feeds their warped minds every single day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If there’s no psychiatry majors out there who aren’t investigating this ego / power trip abnormality, there is a truly massive missed opportunity for you right there. But it’s also truly insane that we got to this point. Of course, we know how – is nearly 50 years of Limbaugh / Swaggart dividing the country, and then Fox News and Infowars sealing the deal. It will be interesting to see if this has an effect on the election or not.

A Colorado judge on Thursday issued an arrest warrant for Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters, a leading election denier who lost last month’s Republican primary for secretary of state, after she allegedly violated the terms of her bond for a second time.

Peters turned herself in Thursday night in Mesa County and was released on $1,000 bond, her attorney Harvey Steinberg told CNN. She is ordered to appear in court on August 29.

Peters is accused of sending an email to the county director of elections in violation of a court order, according to an affidavit filed with the Mesa County District Court.

The arrest warrant marked the second in as many weeks for Peters, a proponent of former President Donald Trump’s election fraud conspiracy theories, who has been free on bond after being indicted earlier this year on 10 counts related to voting machine tampering allegations. She has pleaded not guilty.

I Need A Drink
[br]
[br]

Hey everyone, I don’t know about you, but I could really use a drink!

So of course, you know the idea behind this segment is that we have some drinks, and while we are drinking, we talk about literally anything in the news as long as it doesn’t relate to politics. And if you haven’t noticed, there’s a lot of really dark shit happening in the news right now, so we always feel the best escape from reality is to belly up to the bar and grab a couple of cold ones, and escape reality for a bit. Don’t worry, my sober brothers and sisters, we got you covered too! Just grab a glass of your favorite coffee, tea or energy drink and come get wired with us! So the subject on the table this week is a personal favorite movie of mine, Men In Black. So tell me, AI bartender, what drink goes well with a story about farting and aliens? The Men In Black Cocktail? What’s in that? You know what, fuck it, we’re in Denver, it’s GABF time, give me your biggest, strongest IPA and lots of! Yeah we usually don’t go into toilet humor on this program. Sure, we do go there every once in a while, but when we saw this story, we had to go down the wormhole, and trust us, when we say that it doesn’t smell too good, we definitely mean it!

“Men in Black” director Barry Sonnenfeld appeared on the “Let’s Talk Off Camera With Kelly Ripa” podcast and revealed the set of the 1997 action comedy once had to be evacuated “for about three hours” because Will Smith farted. Smith starred opposite Tommy Lee Jones in “Men in Black,” which grossed $584 million worldwide to become the third-highest-grossing movie of 1997. Combined with the blockbuster success of “Independence Day,” the movie turned Smith into a global superstar.

According to Sonnenfeld, the incident occurred during the scene in which Smith and Jones are in a transforming car that travels at hyper speeds and flips over. In order to film the sequence, the two actors had to be “hermetically sealed” in the pod that was being used for the car.

“There are locks to prevent it from opening and falling,” Sonnenfeld said. “I say, ‘Roll camera.’ And I hear Will Smith go, ‘Oh Jesus, so sorry. Tommy, so sorry. Baz, get the ladder.’ And you hear Tommy saying, ‘That’s fine, Will. No worries, Will. Don’t worry, Will.’ Anyway, I don’t know what’s gone on, right?”

“So we race the ladder over. Yeah, Tommy reaches his leg out as the ladder is coming over, races down the stairs. And what happened was, Will Smith is a farter,” the director continued. “It’s just some people are. And you really don’t want to be inside a very small hermetically sealed space with a Will Smith fart. You don’t even want to be sitting next to him at the Disney ranch.”
https://variety.com/2024/film/news/will-smith-farted-men-in-black-set-evacuated-three-hours-1236166286/

Wow. OK, you know it’s a slow news day when they’re talking about an epic fart from a movie whose peak popularity was in 1997! But Will Smith’s farts weren’t just the only thing that were a nightmare on the set for Men In Black. While the movie was one of the funniest movies of the 90s and grossed nearly half a billion at the box office, apparently a lot of the ridiculous alien props they used – particularly the hypercar built from a 1970s Ford Crown Victoria, also gave some headaches on the set. But from someone who’s also in the comedy business – we say that comedy is all pain, no gain, especially when it comes to physical humor!

"Men in Black" is the kind of movie that feels like it couldn't be made in the modern era. Its combination of humor, heart, impressive CGI, and a truly wacky premise just seems like something no studio would take a risk on in 2024. Thankfully, Sony did take a risk on the script back in the '90s, and the world of moviemaking was all the better for it. While subsequent entries in the franchise came and went, the original remains a classic '90s blockbuster.

In the film, Tommy Lee Jones plays K, a member of the titular secret government agency which is responsible for overseeing alien activity as it relates to Earth. K is paired up with a new recruit named J (Smith), and the duo investigate an alien conspiracy to assassinate two extra-terrestrial ambassadors to Earth. It doesn't sound like the sort of thing Jones might be interested in after his Oscar win and "Batman Forever" debacle, does it? Well, at first, he wasn't.

When he initially came across the "Men in Black" script, Jones wasn't shy about sharing his opinion that it needed to either pick comedy or science fiction as a central theme in order to work. What's more, as detailed in Inverse's oral history of the film, Jones rubbed several crew members the wrong way, with stunt coordinator Brian Smrz claiming the actor "didn't even put his hand out" when Smrz introduced himself, and told the stuntman to talk to his double. But as director Barry Sonnenfeld details in his new memoir "Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time: True Stories from a Career in Hollywood," Jones found something to like about the whole production from the most unlikely source: his comparatively inexperienced co-star.

So yes, in case you’re wondering why we’re sitting here drinking and discussing an epic fart, well, it’s because we can. But it’s interesting that it’s nearly the 30th anniversary of Men In Black, and this story is now coming out. And let’s not forget that incident from two years ago when Will Smith gave Chris Rock that pimp slap at the Oscars that nearly got him ostracized from the Academy. Although I love this weirdly specific quote from Tommy Lee Jones that you don’t want to be at the Disney Ranch when Will Smith farts. Pretty sure you don’t want to be anywhere when Will Smith farts. But it is good that they had a sense of humor about it!

“We have to bring a ladder over on wheels like the old days when you would get on airplanes from the tarmac, and we get them up there and we put them in the thing and we turn it upside down, and we’re ready to shoot,” Sonnenfeld said. “And they’re hermetically sealed in this space, and there are locks to prevent it from opening and falling. I say ‘Roll camera, and I hear Will Smith go, ‘Oh, Jesus. So sorry. Tommy, so sorry. Baz, get the ladder!'”

The director said that Jones was a good sport about the matter and that the crew didn’t know what was going on when they got there. “You hear Tommy saying, ‘That’s fine, Will. No worries, Will. Don’t worry, Will,'” said Sonnenfeld. “I don’t know what’s going on. So we race the ladder over. Tommy reaches his leg out as the ladder is coming over, races down the stairs.”

According to Sonnenfeld, the source of the issue was Smith farting inside of the vehicle, and it got so bad that they had to clear the area for “about 3 hours.” Despite the issue, Sonnenfeld still holds a lot of love for the actor.

“Will Smith is a farter,” Sonnenfeld said. “Some people are. And you really don’t wanna be inside a very small hermetically sealed space with a Will Smith fart. You don’t even wanna be sitting next to him at the Disney ranch . . . He’s, you know, a lovely guy. Just, he farts.”
https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/smith-farts-cleared-men-black-174818020.html

Whether you love or hate Will Smith because of his performance at the Oscars, you got to admit that at least they have a sense of humor! My favorite parts of these stories are when the they call in the “experts” as to how this epic fart could have happened. I bet that was a rather awkward conversation to have over the phone. It’s also an interesting internet wormhole to go through because it leads to articles like “WHAT’S THE LEAST GASSY FOODS YOU COULD EAT???”. And yeah before I get shit for quoting the Daily Mail, all I have to say is “That was the only thing I could find!”. But nevertheless, this is a weird thing to find out when you search for a story like this.

Oscar winner Will Smith passed gas on the Men in Black set that was so pungent it caused an evacuation of the cast and crew for three hours, the movie's director said.

Gastrointestinal experts posited the actor likely had an overgrowth of bacteria in his small intestine that led to the excess flatulence described by the movie's director Barry Sonnenfeld, who said: ‘Will Smith is a farter.’

Mr Sonnenfeld, who also directed the Addams Family films, said Mr Smith seemed embarrassed by his accidental passing of gas on set in 1997 while he and co-star Tommy Lee Jones were stuffed in a ‘hermetically sealed’ pod.

The 56-year-old has previously admitted he is a ‘gassy’ person and his family poked fun at him about it in a roundtable discussion with his children and wife Jada.

Road To The White House 2024
[br]
[br]

Welcome back to our segment that lumps all of the election coverage of the 2024 election to end all elections in: Road To The White House! This week – yes, since we were last here, we had the Vice Presidential Debate between cool dad football coach Tim Walz and guyliner alleged couch fucker JD Vance. You don’t know, you don’t know! One thing we do know is that we have a great drag queen name for him – Ashley Furniture! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha… can’t unsee that one, can you? And I’ll probably expect to hear from Ashley Furniture’s lawyers soon. Anyway, the biggest takeaway from the debate is that JD Vance concocted a lie like every thirty seconds. Nah, maybe it was closer to every ten seconds. But the guy lies like it’s a bodily function and that’s a fact. However, lost in the lie-a-second palooza is one nugget of truth that has since become the dominant story from the debate. If given the chance to certify an election, would Vance do it? The answer that he gave was totally not all shocking, but it is incredibly disturbing given that we could be one Big Mac away from a Vance presidency and the United States turning into a Hungarian style banana republic revolving door dictatorship. And trust us when we say that nobody wants that!

“What President Trump has said is that there were problems in 2020, and my belief is that we should fight about those issues, debate those issues peacefully in the public square. And that’s all I’ve said, and that’s all that Donald Trump has said," Vance said.

This is misleading.

Vance vastly understated Trump’s handling of his 2020 election loss by claiming he simply wanted to have a peaceful debate about problems with the election.

Trump has been indicted twice for seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 election. He repeatedly and falsely claimed that he won the election, making baseless allegations of widespread voter fraud. He made the false claim even as votes were still being counted, and as Congress was certifying the results on Jan. 6, 2021. Speaking to the crowd that would march on and attack the Capitol, Trump falsely claimed the election had been stolen from him and that he could still take the presidency if Vice President Mike Pence did “the right thing.”
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/fact-checking-vice-presidential-debate-vance-walz-rcna172688

There’s two things we’re taking away from this election cycle. One is that we can’t imagine the constant stress that fact checkers are under, especially when the debates (or lack of debates) happen. Or when Trump goes on his Fox News and Newsmax hidey holes. Even the Newsmax guy in this clip has a look on his face like “Dude, you gotta be fucking kidding me!”. So if Newsmax can see that the writing’s on the wall, how do the rest of us who aren’t dialed into the cult dealing with it? We’re not. But we can imagine that a lot of keyboards and monitors are being destroyed this election cycle. To which Samsung, LG and Logitech are like “money in the bank!”. But election denial is no fucking joke.

John Oliver is dismantling the "civility" around the vice presidential debate between Sen. JD Vance and Gov. Tim Walz, ripping Vance to shreds on his continued 2020 election denial.

On Sunday's episode of "Last Week Tonight," the comedian highlighted that there was more to the debate than political commentators were willing to admit or acknowledge.

“The debate included discussions on how to carry out mass deportations and whether women should have control over their own bodies,” Oliver said. “Etiquette is kind of beside the point. It’s like reading a ransom note and going, ‘This cursive is just so lovely. Look at the capital Y in 'You have 24 hours before he dies.' There are still some people who were raised right.'"

However, this hasn't stopped political commentators from stressing that politeness and civility are “what the country has been saying they want more of.”
https://www.salon.com/2024/10/07/john-oliver-rips-into-jd-vance-for-his-continued-denial/

Seriously, that’s kind of how we feel! Yeah we know that destroying our keyboard won’t solve our problems, but it will at least make us feel better for a few minutes! And isn’t that worth it? Oh and by the way, in case you’re wondering how close America could be to having a literal dictator in office if the worst should happen to Donald Trump, JD Vance is going full dictator. Yes, the GOP are getting their cues from the worst of humanity like Hungary’s Viktor Orban. In fact, another bit of truth slipped out in the debate when JD Vance said this about fact checking. Yeah, you don’t question the MAGA cult, they want absolute power, damn it! Who cares who gets hurt?

CBS moderators Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan had an important choice to make ahead of Tuesday’s vice-presidential debate: would they directly fact check the candidates’ statements live in the moment? Or would they take a hands-off approach and let the candidates fact check each other?

O’Donnell and Brennan chose to thread the needle. At the top of the debate, the moderators said their role was “to provide the candidates with the opportunity to fact check claims made by each other” but they did occasionally make statements of fact, often not in direct response to a candidate’s comments. Other times, they’d lob up the opportunity for the opposing candidate to correct the record.

But the most direct fact-check of the night also led to the most dramatic moment on stage, upending what was otherwise a largely civil debate and leading the moderators to cut off the microphones of Sen. JD Vance and Gov. Tim Walz during a contentious back-and-forth over Haitian immigrants in Ohio.
https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/02/media/vance-walz-debate-cbs-moderators-fact-check/index.html

Uh oh! We’re at ketchup bottle alert 5! Someone better lock up all the ketchup bottles at Mar-A-Shithole quickly! Oh that’s right, he’s not at Mar-A-Shithole right now because of the hurricane, so wherever he’s at. But needless to say, the fact checking comment was a true “do not fuck with us” kind of moment. The MAGA cult has gone full blown Project Mayhem, and who knows what kind of destruction they have in store for us? But to sum up the debate, Tim Walz definitely won, but the media won’t report that. JD Vance came off like a raging, lying psychopath and a mini-me version of Trump. But the media won’t report that either. Fun times!

J.D. Vance flew off the handle during the vice presidential debate Tuesday night after one of the moderators tried to fact-check him about his favorite topic, the Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio.

While responding to Vance’s justification of mass deportations, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz highlighted Vance’s role in spreading lies about Haitian immigrants in Springfield. Walz said that Vance’s rhetoric had “vilified a large number of people who were here legally in the community of Springfield.”

“When it becomes a talking point like this, we dehumanize and villainize other human beings,” Walz said.

CBS moderator Margaret Brennan interjected, saying, “Just to clarify for our viewers, Springfield, Ohio, does have a large number of Haitian migrants who have legal status. Temporary protected status.”
