I am a 72-year-old white male. I drove an auto in America for 55 years. I have been stopped by the police about 15 times for minor traffic offenses during those years, at various ages in my life. Never serious infractions, just speeding or rolling through a stop sign. I was always treated with respect and professionalism by the police.
During my time in college and my work life, I have had many African American male co-workers and acquaintances. Often, the subject of the police would come up (now, remember, I'm talking about conversations that covered a half century). I have not conversed with one of these men in which they did not have at least one negative (and fearful) encounter with a white police officer. Donald Trump wants to empower local police to be tougher in such instances and give the officers immunity.
My question is, "why would any African American man want to vote for Trump"?

He goes much deeper than that, but those are the two that stood out for me.

(3,212 posts)White men are not as much at risk from a Trump Presidency as black men are. especially young black men.

(57,780 posts)when the other poster is right, white men are the problem. Few black men will vote for Trump, but white men are his biggest base of support. Quit blaming people of color for the things white people fuck up.

(3,212 posts)The post is written to explain that I'm not at risk from a Trump Presidency because of the color of my skin. I may be at risk because of my political beliefs, but a cop can't tell that by looking at me. If my car doesn't have any bumper stickers on it, I'm just another white guy.
On the other hand, recent history has proven to us that every black man is at risk, no matter who they are, even a pro-football player in the parking lot of the home team's stadium.
Every young black man is at risk at a traffic stop, that's why his parents' have "the talk" about being stopped by the police.
And, by the way, I know 4 out every 5 black men will vote for Harris. The question is, "why would any black man vote for Trump?"
iemanja
(57,780 posts)1) What makes you think they are a threat? 2) What makes you think it's your business to probe their minds? We are talking small numbers, compared to the huge numbers of white men who have made destroying this country their mission.

(3,212 posts)had the Black vote 12% overall for Trump, with 19% of that being black men. that was just on CNN,
and then there's this:
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/black-men-drifted-democrats-toward-trump-record-numbers-polls-show-n1246447
There was an unusual relationship between education and how Black men voted this year. About 26 percent of Black men who had a high school diploma or less supported Trump. But 22 percent of Black men with bachelors degrees and 20 percent of Black men with advanced degrees also supported him. Black men with some college education broke for Biden at levels comparable to those of Black women.

(3,212 posts)I can't understand why the object of that racism supports him.
The OP is not blaming anyone. He is legitimately asking why a Black man (or woman) would vote for Trump, especially given the fact that Trump is a known racist. I have the same question. Clearly, white men are the biggest Trump supporters, and they appear to be motivated by misogyny, racism, homophobia, etc. But Black men, what is their motivation?

(3,212 posts)...why would a black man vote for Trump?
I know why white men do, because they're racist. Oh, they may look for a more socially acceptable reason, like the economy (which is the best in the world), immigration (because they're bigots) or some other foolish reason, but let's face it, there are a lot of white racists and bigots. I already know that. And polls tell us the less educated a white man is, the more liklet they are to support Trump. They hate black and brown men, just like Trump does.
So, again my question, why would a black man support Trump when his election puts a black man even more at risk?

(267 posts)Was thinking about my friends on Facebook and trying to understand ,and it has to be racism and culture wars on a certain level. It doesn't make sense any other way. There will always be the thing about resentment of taxes, and the fear of losing their guns, but a lot of it is resentment of the poor who aren't as worthy.
Why side with them if that's a big part of why they stick by this guy if you are black? Watching my niece post videos about how horrible Democrats are for not providing help to hurricane victims was the last straw for me about how much stupidity is another piece of it.
Never would have imagined that girl cared about politics before this. Hell, she has moved to Greece in the past 5 years.
Do they really think Republicans are about helping the poor and the people who need help?

(2,414 posts)Theres a lot of crazy going around. Some have tuned out because they see no benefit in believing.,
Marginalized with little hope and seen as some thug or gang banger and some are sellouts like black republicans. Black women are not as scary to some white people and they can move into larger society a little easier. There are many reasons but lets not judge them until society takes the boot off their necks.

vote Republican because they are racist and hate people of color.
Are you saying people of color who vote for Trump feel the same way?

(3,212 posts)however, the Trump supporters also put people of color into that same grouping.
In 1932 and 1933 there were Jews (Max Naumann) who supported Hitler. This was after the printing and distribution of Mein Kampf. I'm sure that made sense to them at the time, but it certainly didn't turn out to be a very good decision in the long run.
The Association of German National Jews (German: Verband nationaldeutscher Juden) was a German Jewish organization during the Weimar Republic and the early years of Nazi Germany that eventually came out in support of Adolf Hitler.
It primarily attracted members from the anticommunist middle class, small business owners, self-employed professionals such as physicians and lawyers, national conservatives, and nationalist World War I veterans, many of whom believed that Nazi antisemitism was only a rhetorical tool used to "stir up the masses."[1][2][3]
In 1935, the organization was outlawed, and its founder and leader Max Naumann was imprisoned by the Gestapo.[4] Most other members and their families were murdered in the Holocaust.

(8,870 posts)as a Black man I wonder the same damn thing.
I mean hey, even if you derive some resentful macho bullshit satisfaction from Trump's phony ass tough guy shtick (though, for a 'tough guy' he sure as hell whines a lot)
one would THINK they'd (I say they so as to separate those of us who know better from the Trump supporting clowns)
have some sense of self preservation, knowing the likelihood of harassment, even death is higher for those of us who 'drive while Black' (as explored in John Oliver's show last Sunday).
And that Trump's rhetoric, as well as his stated intentions only bode far worse for us.
One would think they'd be insulted by Trump's racist rhetoric, like how every city will be like Detroit if Kamala's elected. A blatently racist piece of fear mongering if ever there was one.
One would think they'd figure out Trump's intent when he promises a day of extreme violence in so-called purges of America's cities.
And one would THINK they'd see the increase in hate based sentiment, whereby our youth (sons daughters grandkids) can't even play in a regional high school game without getting called the n-word by racist vermin manning the bleachers.
The flip side being, MOST of us are fully aware of the horrors to come with another Trump occupancy in the Oval Office, fully aware of the sentiment driving his rabid base of support,
and MOST of us have the common sense, the INTEGRITY, not to support that kind of shit.
But the fact is there are a few TOO many obstinate, mean-spirited, and deliberately contrary (if not willfully ignorant) Black men buying into Trump, for MY druthers.
And history, I think, will no doubt remember them for their treachery.
end of rant.

I'm an old white man with white male friends and relatives. I know why so many of them support Trump. They're racists.
My confusion is why one in five black men support Trump? There shouldn't be one.

(35,135 posts)A lot of men (of all colors) have been swept up in trump's bullshit and all they need is to be reminded of the harsh facts. The police brutality example is a powerful one that can stop the movement towards trump, but people have to be reminded frequently because the pro-trump/manosphere/immigrant-resentment/echo chamber is very powerful and relentless. But trump is the guy who wanted to silence Colin Kaepernick and others.
