If the fascist take power there could be martial law and that could cause a run on everything. It doesn't hurt to be a little prepared.
Be well and be safe.

(23,343 posts)Yes - I'm optimistic. But not to the point that I'd want to ignore that very real possibility.
If things get ugly, people might have a hard time hunkering down if not at least minimally prepared (two weeks' essentials - minimum).

(13,018 posts)There goes the fucking toilet paper and paper towels off the shelves again.
Corp Execs use to use snow to empty shelves and gouge, now its holler end of days every once in a while. Since we get no snow here in NC that keeps the profits going.
I stocked up on lots of ammo. I got leaves all around.
But, it may not be a bad thing to consider.
Flynn and Bannon predict all hell will break lose.
How can we face ALL HELL without paper products.
This is the End of the world as we know it.
Cue up REM.
Trump should away to that for 39 minutes.
After dealing with Helene here near Asheville, we are well aware of the Hell of nothing working, only cash can get you anything that is left on the shelves, and raging people in gas lines.
Seriously, I do think hard about it.

(23,343 posts)Let's hope it doesn't come to that.
But if Republicans succeed in their (unbelievably treasonous) goal of destroying the dollar as the world's reserve currency - well, you described the scenario pretty well.
I'd add only that ammo is unlikely to help, and might even guarantee the homeowner's death (God forbid) - because in the event of all-out collapse, we'd be looking at armed gangs - which will likely include laid-off police - roaming neighborhoods, warehouses, and commercial areas, basically outgunning anyone who stood in their way.
Basically, a Mad Max scenario in which no one would be safe - least of all anyone who shot back.
Heavens forbid.

(13,018 posts)Well, I never dreamed of trucks loaded with MAGA militias roaming my county like ISIS patrols out hunting down Gubment FEMA teams here to help.
Is any scenario far fetched ANY MORE.
I do know, November 5th Foreword will be much worse than it was in 2020.
And after a failed trial run, with Weapons this time.
What we can be sure of, the suits like Trump, Hawley, Bannon and Hannity will be far from any field action.
They will be the Putins sending his peeps to kill or die, while safe in their multiple mansions.
Jesse Waters and Tuckums onThe front line, with no TP? 😂

That does sound scary.
peppertree
(23,343 posts)- since there isn't nearly enough gold in the world to meet the U.S. economy's colossal monetary demands.
But who would benefit from such a collapse? Those with massive gold hoards of course (which reputedly include Trump).
Since World War II, as you know, the greatest non-human asset the U.S. has had, is the world's faith in the dollar.
And since Reagan, it has enabled us to run massive external (and budget) deficits without triggering an Argentine-style crisis. We can do this because anywhere you go in the world, the dollar is accepted - and often preferred - on sight.
Republicans' favorite tool in their attempts to destroy global faith in the dollar, you'll recall, has been the repeated threat of default.
But lately, they've found another one: crypto currencies.
Their medium-term goal is have as much of the economy switch from the dollar to crypto (preferably GOP-controlled) - which would necessarily create so much instability, a gold standard imposition would necessarily follow.
Again - that seems to be the goal. Whether they ever come even close to accomplishing it (perish the thought), is another matter.

Not baby formula or diapers, not dish soap and bleach, not generators, or flour, dried beans, shelf stable veggies and meats, powdered or bottled juice or drink mix, eggs, pet food... Not goods that are imported and delivery could be delayed...
The first shortage has lately seemed to be toilet paper. With it's close cousin, paper towels.
Why?

There was a lot of hoarding-to-resell of that, as you know, during Cheeto's fitful last few months in office.
A fitting metaphor, I thought at the time, for Trumponomics.

Koch Industries. Own the media, create huge demand and raise prices to buy judges and politicians that will eliminate taxes on all that fear buying.

(15,399 posts)Doubled up rags are what people used for centuries before.
And there was that time in 2021, I was laid up half blind for a couple weeks; there was only one other driver but(working 12 hours a day) and others in the house were with Long Covid brain fogged, lazy or broke to either get TP delivered or go out for a long walk to the nearest store to get some.
I had the grandkids cut up an old sheet and we made due until the other younger healthy adults figured out what they had to do instead of of depending on Grandma to hold their hands and stop depending on fast food delivery instead of going grocery shopping.
Cut sheets just need to be washed out daily, like old fashioned cloth diapers. No problem.

(16,344 posts)Earthquakes are possible here; our local neighborhood emergency team made the point several years ago that in the case of The Big Onenot really even any large earthquake, the local fire department would be unlikely to make it into our neighborhood for over a month. (And theyre less than 3 miles away; we pay for fire services because we arent in the city proper.)
So I wont panic over any potential civil unrest because prep for a potential earthquake is close enough of a prep for me.
