(11,500 posts)"Now a potent voice among Catholic conservatives is arguing that the Al Smith Dinner has become the Al Smith Embarrassment and should be scrapped altogether.
Its time to give thanks for what it once did and then give it a decent burial, George Weigel wrote in a column on Wednesday (Oct. 26) published at First Things, a conservative journal of religion and politics."

That whole dinner lost all respectability and relevance back in 2016, when that quote was made.

(3,633 posts)he has always been unstable, at least since Obama was President.
But OK, it is good for people to realize the guy doesn't have a full brain, and what little he has is unstable.

(7,395 posts)I once had to give an oral report, a speech, about a history topic.
If I got close to getting off topic, my teacher would yell out "Stay on topic, bitch!"
No ability to ramble, be incomprehensible, and no teleprompter to "help". Had to memorize it all.

(7,395 posts)yelled, I mean drill sergeant yelling. Like in the movie "Full Metal Jacket."
He fought in WW II in the 1940s and was in the Navy. He was in the Battle of Midway, and lived through it.
My Little League Baseball coach a few years later also yelled at us. 11 year old kids. He didn't care.
We just took it. My high school teachers in the 1980s were also harsh, so college was a "nothing burger" for me. Teachers would yell and verbally abuse the students as they felt and we just had to take it or else get bad grades.
The coincidental thing is that I tutored half the football team in high school and we won a sectional championship because of it. So, I did know the football coach, in fact most of them, and most of the players too.

(2,519 posts)I guess I should consider myself lucky. The worst teacher I had was Mr. King in the 5th grade. Ordinarily he just seemed like someone who settled into teaching because he couldn't think of anything else to do with his life. His moments came when someone didn't do their classwork or homework. He would scream "yeah, you didn't do it, ya know why? Because yur lazy, L-A-Z-Y!" Real piece of work.
Never shared any personal info. I would guess around 1975 he was about 30 so old enough to have been in Vietnam. Who knows.
Worst professor goes to a guy in the history department who was the resident "African specialist." somehow. A total apologist for things. As a German who must of come up during the Third Reich he would defend the Hitler Youth as "really just an equivalent of the Boy Scouts."
When I took a class on Africa from him, his support of colonialism was as evident as his criticism of current regimes. I think he got tired of me pushing back on his BS and one day told me in response to an issue of repression "personally I don't think you'd be able to keep your mouth shut long enough to stay out of prison in Malawi." I felt good knowing I got under his skin.

(2,519 posts)That may be part of his "exhaustion" of late forcing him to drop out of consecutive media interviews. He's not used to being given no quarter by anyone, especially like this. Everything he rambles ends up as a Harris Walz press release and he's going apoplectic.
