(71,542 posts)scary scary that actually demoralizes voters. Why so defensive ?

(9,495 posts)That's seems equivalent to thinking that sounding a severe weather watch "demoralizes" people into not making preparations.
Like many disabled people, I depend on the social safety net for sustenance and medical care. Additionally, I am overseeing the care for my 81-year-old, Alzheimer's-ridden father. My fear of what will happen should Trump and his GOP acolytes win makes me feel more invested in Democratic victories, more resolute that they MUST win. My back is to the wall here.

(2,357 posts)I am also more-than-average vulnerable to a Trump takeover (imo the only way he'd get back to WH).
I am very glad that here on DU was posted awhile back a link to how some international LGBTQ activists are in discussions about mutual support should the worst happen. We all have different ways of getting through the time between now and when the next president takes office.

(23,343 posts)As they say: hope - and work - for the best; but cope with the rest.
I still think it's unlikely this great country will have to be afflicted with a second Needy Amin regime - but there's no denying it's possible.
And if it's possible, it behooves us to start thinking of the best decisions going forward in that case - because you know the fat bastard and his toadies will.

(60,320 posts)A clearer mind not clouded with fear and "oh noes" would write "tRump would ..." which is phrasing that is contingent on him converting a possibility into an accomplishment and that contingency should be stated. Like "tRump would implement Project 2025 if he wins".
"will" is a definite word that presumes he won. Unfortunately there are a few too many posts with "will" and its presumption that he will win.
I think this is the kind of thing that prompted the OP.

(43,165 posts)I'll even give you a tip if you can go to Facebook. There are small groups of people there who are collaborating on where and when they'll go if he manages to get back in. Most of these people are highly visible types who have publicly criticized him but not all of them. They compare notes on where to go, what to do with their house, etc. That's constructive.
What's not constructive is using DU as a therapy group, expressing "fear" and that your "back is to the wall." Find constructive groups with people who are in a similar situation and compare plans. It would alleviate your fears and give you a start if something like this should happen.
Emotions are contagious. Look at the positive feelings Kamala has spread!

(1,107 posts)And it's what has gotten Democrats and Liberals into so much trouble over the years. In a way we've become "hope addicts" The only one in my opinion that ever consistently got it right was Bernie Sanders. That old socialist understood with crystal clarity where Trump and MAGA were heading, and the ultimate danger they present to every one of us. He wasn't afraid to say it and he never glibly danced around the truth.
Absolutely the Harris campaign is paying close attention to the polling trend, of course they are smart enough to look at poll aggregates and to throw out the outliers - but they are relying on that information to decide where to spend their $$ and where to go for their final blitz. I will say this, at least some Democrats are taking the threat seriously this time around unlike the Clinton campaign in 2016 where the general ambivalence handed a victory to the Fascist Right.
I am so sorry to hear about your situation, there are millions like you. And it's more than losing our safety net. If the MAGA fascists manage to seize power, it will be our very freedoms that will be at stake.
misanthrope
(9,495 posts)I only included the stuff about my situation because someone described my tone as "defensive." I provided context.
Agreed on your other points as well.
RidinWithHarris
(790 posts)It's bullshit. Political campaigns wouldn't themselves send out all of those "We're in deep trouble! Send us money!" pleas if avoiding negative thoughts was truly so necessary and important to electoral success.
I think this really boils down to superstitious magical thinking... you must "think positive to manifest the positive", "negative energy" will bring you down, etc., etc.
Hey, do whatever head games you need to do for yourself, but don't expect everyone else to play along.
dwayneb
(1,107 posts)This isn't about emotions, ultimately this is about data.
Poll data in some case may be biased or slanted or otherwise unreliable, abut I can assure you that both campaigns are analyzing that data in every way possible - effectively looking at the aggregate of all polls, and tossing out the outliers. It's a lot like predicting a hurricane's path, there are numerous models that generate the path, and the average of those paths are what we use to predict the landfall.
Exactly the same methods in using polling data. The data feeding into that model is not always perfect but to ignore those models is equivalent to not bothering to evacuate in the face of an impending hurricane.
This has nothing to do with "feelings".

(47,940 posts)Voter registration, early voting, for example. Those have been very promising for Democrats. So, it's irritating when people here say the sky is falling when some new poll shows Trump is winning.

(76,706 posts)A search of all the web can turn up the number of times a person is mentioned in a given unit time.
Using the name adds to hits, which further strokes the ego of a guy who is very sensitive to that.
Why run the numbers up? His lackeys give him one value. Good or bad mentions are not discerned.
A number higher today than yesterday makes him happy.
DU is not in business to make that tool happy.
After 23 years here, another thing I believe DU is not here for are lectures about how people should express themselves.

You would hardly expect anyone to make a an endearment for trump.
I also think it allows the writer to let off a little steam or hostility toward our mutual object of scorn.

(9,605 posts)He was big and fluffy and got his name from having a bullseye pattern on his face like the dog in Little Rascals. He belonged to an irresponsible neighbor but we agreed to take him in. He was very sweet so I started calling him Peetey Sweety That eventually became Sweetie Pie. Sometimes that turned into Pie Guy. ..
NJCher
(43,165 posts)I know that bullseye thing you're talking about from Little Rascals!
I was able to do that in a similar situation. The neighbor, a medical doctor, had gotten tired of having a dog and was neglecting her. I told another neighbor who then saw what was happening and asked if she could adopt the dog. Right off the bat she had rung up around $700 in vet bills from the lack of care (can you believe that a doctor would be so neglectful??!!). Several other neighbors chipped in, though. Happy ending. I loved that dog and was so happy to see her stay in the neighborhood in a happy home.
Yeah! Never-ending fun with names. Everybody joins the fun. Around here Oliver is also known as:
