He enjoys campaigning. He enjoys crowds. He enjoys being adored and looking down on others. And Yes, being President would solve some of his legal problems.
But he does not want to be President.
A few days ago, there was this campaign-rally where Trump just stopped taking questions from his adoring fans... and had everyone listen to his playlist while he just stood there on stage, telling the staff what song to play next. For 39 minutes.
Yesterday he had a campaign-rally in Michigan. The mic didn't work. What did Trump do? Nothing. He could have shouted, he could have mingled with the crowd, shake hands, give autographs, talk to people, kiss babies, throw merchandise into the crowd, he could have improvised SOMETHING to salvage this rally... But he just stood there on the stage, basking in the love of his fans, literally doing nothing. For 16 minutes.
Donald Trump is old and already has mentally checked out from his life. He doesn't care anymore. There are no passions left inside him. No fire. No will to work. All he cares about are the two remaining things that make him happy:
1. Looking down on others.
2. Standing in front of cheering crowds.
Donald Trump reminds me of one of my grandfathers when he developed early-stage dementia: He really struggled to focus on the present, to focus on conversations. But he was perfectly clear when fondly talking about good memories from 50 years ago, because that made him happy.
Donald Trump does not want to be President. He just wants to live out the remaining days of his life having some fun.

(24,902 posts)He never liked doing the job of president, but I can assure you, he absolutely LOVED being president. Everyone called him "Sir". Everyone was deferential to him. He could fly by helicopter to a waiting 747 that would take him to any one of his golf courses on a moments notice and he didn't have to pay for it. He loved the idea that he could order the military to kill people in other countries, but it did bother him that he couldn't do the same to Americans he didn't like. The power it gave him was an aphrodisiac.
Oh, he absolutely wants to be president again. But just like last time, he'll do a bad job of it.

I had to edit one of my own post #7 on this thread when I made the same easy mistake.
