Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSo my husband and I decided on a whim to "join" a Trump sign waving party in a ruby red county.
Central Florida
Friday, October 18
6:00 - 6:30 p.m.
For context, there is a highly traveled intersection near me with a CVS on one corner that provides ideal out-parcel space to conduct a sign waving event. MAGAts have used it over the last eight years, even when there isn't an election going on! I hadn't seen the Trump nutters out there for awhile, but they started showing up again routinely on Friday evenings the last few weeks. Demonstrably smaller crowds of late, but as enthusiastic. Every Friday around 4:00, my husband and I go visit my parents for a bit and have to pass this way to return home.
Unbeknownst to my long-suffering husband, I wore my Kam47a t-shirt for this very reason and tucked a Harris/Walz sign in the trunk of the car. As we approached the intersection I saw they were out yet again and asked if he minded dropping me off for half an hour so I could stand respectfully off to one end and hold up the Harris/Walz sign. He shocked me by not only agreeing, but staying with me holding up a "Florida is in Play" sign we happened to have in the trunk from an event we attended about six weeks ago. Folks, I cannot tell you how jaw dropping this was for me. He has 100% supported my political activity over the years, but never actively participated.
We had so much fun!
For one thing, we estimate that about 50% of the cars driving by reacted in our favor. Some of the folks driving by seemed ecstatic when they saw us. We noted a few things. Positive reactions heavily skewed younger, female (usually with a kid or two in the car), and/or people of color. But plenty of elderly couples expressed support too. The most obnoxious nay sayers were overwhelmingly elderly women. Or maybe that was their arthritis rendering them unable to bend their middle finger. Who knows, I digress.
We did keep our distance positioned after their final "Trump/Vance" yard sign, but sure enough several of their folks wandered down. We "interacted" with four of them. Here's how it went.
Two middle-aged men approached us. One was the nutter type who displayed obsession with immigrants and gender issues. We largely ignored him. Even when he snidely said something that indicated he knew who was on top when we had sex. Clearly his incel status makes him unable to imagine there are way more positions if you know what you're doing. Anyway, I digress again.
The other guy ended up engaging with me in a somewhat rational conversation. When ranting guy finally wandered off, I said, "Hey you mentioned you have daughters. How do you feel about their reproductive rights being taken away?" He said something about exceptions for rape and incest. I responded, "Oh no. In many states that is most definitely not the case. Take a look at what is happening in Texas. Women are dying" He asked me what my position was on post-birth abortion. I calmly responded. "That is infanticide, is illegal in every jurisdiction in the country, and no democrat on the planet would support making that legal." I asked if he knew that at six weeks, over 95% of women don't even know they are pregnant yet so we could be sentencing women with high risk pregnancies to death." His face turned white and he changed the subject to the media failing us. I said I absolutely agreed and left it at that. I thanked him for being an American who loves their country just like I do and for respecting my right to advocate for my candidate. He put out his hand and said, "I'm going to look up what you said about abortion." (in a way that indicated he was fact-checking me, but not snidely) I responded, "please do" and shook it.
Another guy came over who looked like he had been sent our way by ranting guy. Ended up having a conversation with him that was 100% devoid of any politics. You would have thought we were at a cocktail party, that kind of small talk. He was new to the area, recently retired from the Air Force, so my husband and I immediately engaged him with "where were you before, what drew you to the area, determined our kids had gone to the high school his kids were in now, etc." We told him it was a great area to raise kids, wished him well, he shook our hands, and quietly went back to his crowd.
We then had to ignore an unhinged anti-choice bitch who came over clutching a Vote No on 4 sign who shouted at us, called us losers, and made assumptions that we must have no children. We have three. We both knew better than to engage with her. That unspoken communication loser husbands and wives have after 30 years, you know.
After half an hour, the traffic was dying down, the wind was picking up, we were getting hungry, and frankly, my arms were tired from holding up a sign and waving at motorists. So these two fifty-something Enemies Within headed back to our car. Which by the way, is not a beaten up old pickup truck festooned with Harris is The Second Coming stickers and Walz has Ballz flags. As we were leaving, rational guy came over one more time, and said, "for democracy" and gave us each a fist bump. What the fuck is he doing with the nutters?
I don't know if he'll actually do the research much less learn anything important in the process, but I learned/confirmed a few important things last night:
1. Publicly advocating for democrats will not get you killed around here, despite my neighbors and family's concerns.
2. There were way more motorists excited to see us and expressing support than I anticipated.
3. Some Trump supporters are indeed so brainwashed and/or mentally ill that you really should not engage with them. Ever.
4. There are some folks in that bubble who might be able to be rescued. Even if you don't know the outcome, it is worth the effort. At the very least, I hope the two we engaged with now see that we are normal people and not an enemy.
Thanks for making it this far. I know I was long-winded.
Eighteen days!!!

(1,107 posts)That takes a lot of courage.
If MAGA takes power in 2024, one day it is not at all inconceivable that we could lose the right of free assembly and dissent. Trump makes no bones about that, he is ready willing and able to implement the old "un-American activities" supporession tactic that has been used in the past.

I think of all those in past generation who fought for us to keep this nation free. And this felon wanna be dictator and Putin asset will not enter the WH again.

(186 posts)to turn Florida BLUE! 💙 I have a Harris/Walz bumper sticker, and I have had several people pull alongside me at intersections and give me the high sign.
I live in a fairly red area and I have noticed a defínate lack of trump yard signs
homes that were festooned with trump parafernalia last election have nothing out this time around.
Dont believe the polls. Big change is coming. We arent going back. The blue wave is real and its big and it will soon be here.
We. Are. Not. Going. Back.

(6,082 posts)So I am in Florida this week for work. Monday thru Saturday. Im in Lake Mary, which for those of you who dont know is right next to Sanford, where Trevon Martin was murdered by that freak! Anyway, during the little free time Ive had I would take I4 into Orlando to commiserate with my fellow gay folks. Not much to see from the freeway. Well yesterday I got an unexpected afternoon free. So I decided again to drive into Orlando and see some sites. Well as soon as I got on I4 traffic all but stopped. Big accident closed the left 2 lanes. I pulled out WAZE to find alternate routes. It took me off the freeway and through a lot of residential neighborhoods. During this detour I didnt see one, yard sign for tsf/couch fucker. NOT A SINGLE ONE...BUT I counted about a dozen Harris/Walz yard signs. Makes me feel Florida may just go blue this election. Not sure about the next or the local races.

Next time I saw her, she'd done more research, but expressed a favorable view of Vance. I showed her the information about Vance saying women should stay in abusive marriages for the sake of their kids. She was shocked and, I suspect, immediately turned off on Vance.

(25,212 posts)My husband and I both said in unison, "yes!"
Rational guy looked surprised. I said, "when I was in high school, I played sports. When we were the away team, we were given the boys locker room. There were several times a girl on my team would have benefited from hygiene products being available." He seemed to have a bit of a light bulb look on his face.
I went on. Have you ever been to a sporting event or a concert where the men's room was available while the women's room was overwhelmed? He nodded with an understanding look on his face.
I said, "look, a bathroom is a bathroom. Do you really care one way or the other what supplies are available? Does it bother you to use the same bathroom at home that your wife and daughters do?" So why should anyone care what's in a school bathroom? If you need something there, use it. If you don't, leave it alone."
He did seem embarrassed by incel guy by the time we left. I'll consider that my one win. 😊

(69,508 posts)and you and your husband extended your hands and explained in a calm manner to "educate" those who may have lost their way. I think this is due to misinformation and disinformation being decimated over the years (gaslighting/propaganda), and the felon repeating a tactic that fascists use to wear people down to the point they can't even do critical thinking.
Your experience does give some hope, that we will win.

(15,420 posts)I appreciate point 4 at the end. In a sense what you did is put yourselves out there in the hope that you can uplift consciousness levels.
I don't want to sound esoteric here, but that really is the mission. I do not know if you have heard of him, but there was a fellow named David Hawkins. He was a psychiatrist who developed a logarithmic scale of human consciousness and published Power vs Force clear back in 1991.
Anyway, the MAGA propaganda bubble works to generate fear, desire and anger, all low on the scale. One of the best definitions of fascism I have heard is that it essentially promises people they will get what they want without specifying what that is, and without actually ever giving it to them.
Ultimately, I believe that this election is this MAGA movement hitting bottom and whoever can seems to be waking up. It is always ironic to me that they express such scorn for what they call 'wokeness.' I wonder sometimes if some of the saner people toward the edges of that bubble reflect at times that the opposite of being awake is being asleep. And, following that train of thought, who might be benefitting from this group being asleep?
No, I will spare you the rant about shareholder primacy, Wall Street and billionaires calling the shots and so on, but look at what Elon Musk is now doing with changes to privacy policies on X. And my wife this morning texted me a story about a county in Texas that has re-labeled a nonfiction book for kids titled, "Colonization and the Wampanoag Story" as fiction because they do not apparently like their kids (presumably white kids) to feel uncomfortable when reading about what their ancestors did to the indigenous peoples in this country.
People are getting tired of this. I'm watching Velshi now, and he just spoke to a bunch of AZ voters who are voting for Harris in spite of being conservative, just to save the nation.
In this election we may well witness our people saving the republic for another 50 years!

(28,493 posts)is this:" I asked if he knew that at six weeks, over 95% of women don't even know they are pregnant yet so we could be sentencing women with high risk pregnancies to death." Yeah, everyone. Six weeks in and most women don't know they're pregnant.
The other thing that enrages me is how some people seem to think women suddenly decide at 8 1/2 months that they really don't want the baby and abort.
I understand there's something out there that can give men at least some of the sensations of childbirth. They all last maybe ten minutes. We women? Many hours, sometimes actual days of labor.

(14,233 posts)Great job, and thanks for your insights.
I feel that, if not for the media, TSF wouldn't even have the thinning support he has now. He pays people to attend his events, packs his town halls with supporters rather than the unaffiliated, skews the polls, calls into Faux News, etc. Of course there are still cultists, but much of his 'support' is an illusion that has been carefully crafted.
Lots of people are swayed by peer groups, but if you give them truthful information they seem surprised, as they have not heard it before. One of the big things we Democrats have going for us is momentum and the easily swayed peer group types can see it. This helps us pick them off.
That, and the never-ending bullshit show that is losing it's luster along with the decaying frontman. He is now scary and stale. The faux "Trump' class, business acumen, and glamor facade has completely worn away.
If not for the media...sigh.
Hopefully, WHEN we take the election we can do something about the media that serves to amplify the interests of billionaires and not the People. This is not what a free press is.
