(2,278 posts)It's as if a good chunk of the country publicly endorsed Charles Manson - or Ted Bundy.
Many years ago, having tried to get my head around a couple Jerry Lewis movies, having learned what a superstar he was in France, I walked away shaking my head. "Different tastes" and all, I told myself.
This is entirely different.

(2,957 posts)As has been said many times, Trump supporters were around before Trump ran for President. They just never had a President to support them before he came along.

(5,393 posts)The other thing they have in common: hatred and disdain for non-white immigrants, and misogyny. Its disturbing. One, the loudest and most outspoken, bragged that hes never voted (government is corrupt, blah blah blah) so at least that part is comforting. Thankfully, I work opposite shifts from the other one so dont have to deal with him. Last time we worked together he made awful comments about a Hispanic customer I had just helped. He is weak, insecure, hateful little dickhead loser.
(Ive destroyed the first one in arguments, to the point he wont speak to me for the rest of the day, on more than one occasion. I dont start the political discussion but I WILL finish it, asshole.)

(2,634 posts)Remember that for the average German during World War Ii, most of the atrocities that were committed, such as the Holocaust and the death camps, were hidden, by a very pliant media. Part of this was also due to the fact that many of the people who were in the know were actually Austrian, who were even more pro-Hitler than the Germans were. Similarly, many of the most infamous camps such as Auschwitz-Birkinau were in Poland.
The MAGA for the most part are the evolution of the American Nazi party and the Ku Klux Klan. Ultranationlist, authoritarian, misogynist, racist, jingoistic. It's worth noting that Germans actually make up the single largest group by country of origin in the US, even beating out Mexico and the UK, and it was far from certain that America wouldn't go to war in support of Germany in the 1930s. There was a lot of support for Hitler in the US, especially among the upper class.

American progressive sensibilities were largely driven by the Nordic countries, but the strain of Nazi Aryanism was laid, barely dormant, just under the cultural awareness of the US for a long time, until it finally fused with the emergent Christo-Fundamentalists in the 1970s. It's easy to see MAGAts as being rubes, but it is worth understanding the deeper origins of where this movement came from, and the fact that Trump has been very adept at molding himself as the Aryan Ubermensch (tall, wealthy, blonde, powerful, sexually active, etc.)

(998 posts)They admire the things that we find repulsive about Trump.
The fact that his latest Presidential run didn't truly take off until he was indicted on 91 felony counts says it all.
And when Trump has ever said something normal like "get your Covid vaccine" they turn on him.
If he'd allowed a peaceful transition of power 4 years ago and admitted Biden won the cult wouldn't have forgiven him. They admire his January 6th coup attempt and wish it had succeeded.

(2,301 posts)and they identify him as "just like them" and as representing them. MTG understands this too and plays to that same awful crowd by saying awful things, and they love it. Ann Coulter used to be the standard bearer for this, but she could do it "safely" because she wasn't running for office.

"Thirst for the spectacle of Trumps cruelty": Exploring MAGA's unbreakable bond - Salon Make America Great Again actually means Make America White Again
With the psychological deftness of a cult leader, Trump is able to infiltrate the shadowed corners of Americas consciousness, casting a sinister silhouette that bends reality into a fevered hallucination of chaos and bloodlust. His voice, like a conjurers incantation, stirs the embers of rage, mustering both a conviction and devotion that consumes both logic and restraint. This would not be possible if his audience did not already thirst for the spectacle of Trumps cruelty a grotesque panorama of cities overrun by thieves, murderers and criminally insane, sapping the marrow of the law that once made America safe for white collar felons like Trump.
From September 2017:
Study: A Picture of a Black Person Can Anger Trump Supporters and Change Their Politics - The Grio
According to Vox, they could be triggered by a photograph of a black person.
More specifically, a new study (pdf) by political scientists at Colgate and the University of Minnesota proves they have racist tendencies. Thats not just a popular opinion; it is a statistical fact.

(12,150 posts)trump appears to hate America intensely, and his mindless worshipers love him with a white-hot passion so of course they have to hate America as well. What dreadfully awful people he attracts! The scum of our society.
None of the smart people I know can stand trump. The few dumb people I know all LOVE him.

(49,295 posts)December 2016:
So when Camerota met with a group of Trump voters who she had spoken with throughout the campaign, it was not surprising to hear that he still has their unwavering support. That held true when they were asked about his new position advocating punishment for those who burn the American flag or picking former Wall Street executives to join his administration despite his campaign rhetoric.
The panel first spoke to CNN last year, before Trump had even won the primary. Frustrated by the current state of the government, DeLemus told Camerota that she does not believe anything a single politician says, but she does believe Trump.
He says what Im thinking, she had said. He is resonating with the people and hes speaking our minds.
Nearly a year later, this group is thrilled (but not surprised) that Trump defeated Clinton, and they are sticking by him.

(9,990 posts)And "inspired" many to follow Lester Maddox, Orville Faubus, Hitler, et al. A considerable swath of "humanity" embraces evil-doers who aspire to commit evil deeds towards others. But these individuals perceive themselves as somehow being excluded from harm, a dangerous miscalculation. Trump's current appeal coupled with recurrent historical events are reminders that this unfortunate human element will continue to persist in some form.

(130,533 posts)the attraction of Trump is that he's overtly and proudly transgressive and he says and does all the nasty things they'd like to do but can't get away with. He's a lot of people's dark, hateful id. And it's sad and scary to know that so many awful people walk among us.
