(26,856 posts)Is this something you planned as in -
the moon's up on x days let me look for a jet that seems to be heading in it's direction.
Or
As ou're zooming into the moon (and thinking of some Moon song) you catch a jet heading in it's direction out of the corner of your eye and you go "Aha!".
Wonderful Pic whether by plan or serendipity.

(10,440 posts)Of course no expectation of success, it's all a crap-shoot to get a direct hit, which is relatively rare, lots of near hits.
I'm all about the long reach in photography, long lenses give a different perspective to normal vision. The moon is huge because it was taken with a 1200mm lens. I live in north Tampa, and 15 miles to the west of me is the flight path for planes coming from up north, to Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, and Palm Beach. This is before they begin to descend, so they are at maximum altitude. When the moon is in the right position, I can be found with my camera on a tripod and my laptop on a site that shows every airplane in the air, airframe registration, plane type. (globe.adsbexchange.com), and another site that shows origin and destination for all planes (flightradar24.com). This particular plane is a G600 at 45k ft and 15nm distance heading to Miami. I am particularly proud of this one, although there are many more to see.

(26,856 posts)Wow all the ones w contrails.
First one you got a perfect sun edge on the plane, with a near spakle glint near the front top by piolot's windows.
All kinds of angles of approach.
The fancy painted ones!
One where the plane us in blue sky heading leftward w a bright bank of clouds w a diagonal edge near by.
Then, oh my - see if I got it right
A ?B-52, definitely The Stealth Fighter, and could that be (not sure) an ?SR-57 all together?!
Lovely sets of fighter jets.
(Yeah, of course, I wish we didn't need instruments of war. But they are beautifully designed)
I've been on the Intrepid Museum (aircraft carrier) and many fighter jets parked there.
Including the SR-57.
Hope I got the designation right.
Then your jets and Moon.
Well, a 1200mm lens that will do a trick or two! Imagining the ?foreshortening on certain things.
Very cool. Esp w contrails or the jet totally "inside" the moon.
The very first one the moon is totally close to white w neutral grays, but the contrail, and the jet itself are a very pale blue! Wonderful subtle image.
The multiple jet ones. Some kind of multi capture as it flys along?
As far as the moon goes I remember my 2nd digital camera that had 12xs optical to 38-40xs digital back in ?2010.
It was the first time I got photos of the Moon where I could see craters even amall ones, their shadows etc. So exciting!
.ETA:
I'm almost sure it was poster Aviation Pro that mentioned globe.adsbexchange.com first that I caught.
I love that site when I can get the direction trails of the planes in real time (or set other wise) on the interactive map.

(10,440 posts)To answer your questions,
A ?B-52, definitely The Stealth Fighter, and could that be (not sure) an ?SR-57 all together?!
B-52 from Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, a B-1 from Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, and a B-2 from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri taken outside Tampa Sadium at Super Bowl LV.
Some of the fighters were taken at the Cocoa Beach Airshow a few years back, and many were taken near MacDill AFB in Tampa.
The multiple jet ones. Some kind of multi capture as it flys along?
All of the photos of the planes around the moon are one of a series, sort of a very slow motion movie, at 4 frames per second. As soon as it is apparent the plane will be close to, or a direct hit, I will simply hold the shutter release and capture the approach and exit from the moon and then pick the most dramatic single shot. In the multi shots, I combined the series of shots to show what it really looked like in the viewfinder.
I have been a "photographer" since 1970 on the DMZ, in and around Panmunjom. I enjoy photographing any and everything.
Check out all the goodness by starting at the beginning: https://jamesdevore.smugmug.com/

(26,856 posts)That sunset by the pier. The cliff on the right w the orange ocean, and sky.
Your close up flowers & fruits photos.
Some very nice abstracts, too.
The sort of spartan look of the DMZ. Very documentarian.
But there was the one ?SK/DMZ lovely photo with road to the very left w trees, then fields to the center and right, w mountains in the distance.
I think you submitted it to a DU photo contest bc I remember I think I voted fot it.
And one of an ?outlook tower decorated with traditional Korean objects.
Oh, that great dynamic photo of the facade front of the GM Pavillion at the NYC '64/65' World's Fair. I loved the WF! I think we went about 5 times each of those 2 summers!
In May 1970 my HS Graduation present was my first serious camera! I'd had a little Kodak automatic - which when I could I took more artistic photos.
Now I had an SLR! The best thing was it had dual light meters - averaging, and a spot meter!
This was bc I took landscapes, and nature photos when I could. Cloud photos.
Some urbanscapes here in NYC. On my big 2 vacations one totally across the USA to AZ, NM, SF & LA, and the other to Alberquerque NM, up to South Dakota, back to NM, & AZ!
The spot meter was good for certain Nature pics, but mostly I got it for taking R&R concert photos of the bands I liked and loved. So much better to be able to use the spot meter on the lit figures with the often dark backgrounds of the rest of the stage.

(10,440 posts)were with an Instamatic, I was 14. I got my first SLR, a Minolta SRT-101 on the DMZ in 1970. I was inclined to photography, but that's when I really became hooked.
We were really isolated on the DMZ, not allowed to wear civilian clothes until we were south of the river, across that steel frame bridge. We rarely got the chance to go to Seoul but that one day, when I saw that scene, I asked the driver to pull over and got the photo of Bukhansan Mountain, which was made into a National Park in 1983. The photo was on negative film and to look at the negative was to see nothing, not even worth printing so I never did. As photo technology advanced, I began using Photoshop and scanning ALL my negatives and slides, and was absolutely floored to see what had been in my box of negatives for exactly 50 years and never been printed. Now at my age, all that seems like a weird dream, like how can that have really happened to me, did I really live through that? Without photography, I might actually question the reality of it all.
Thanks again for your interest and hope you enjoyed!

(5,011 posts)They are all beautiful and striking! CONGRATS to the winners--- and all who submitted!
Every photo I saw was very good--- hard choices.
As for the actual winner--- you should immediately copyright your photo, (if you haven't already), and look to sell it---
it is so unique, it has certain commercial potential!!!
I can easily visualize it as art on my living room wall...
