Just a thought for all those Dems who think Newt is the preferrable candidate against Mr Obama this year: the Republican Party has shown an amazing ability to resuscitate presumed-dead candidates. Consider Mr Nixon and Mr Reagan, both of whom were washed-up has-been laughingstocks, but who won election against a single-term Democratic president and were subsequently re-elected by record-setting landslides. Mr Gingrich fits this profile exactly.
I submit it would be in the best interests of the United States if Mr Gingrich does not appear on the ballot this November, however much it might be to the advantage of the Democratic Party.

(18,964 posts)as the Repub with the most delegates to the convention: you can expect a "brokered convention" and a back-room, smoke-filled room, hand-picked candidate to walk off with the nomination ....possible the Gov Mitch Daniels or even Jeb Bush...
then....
Newt will cry foul
Form his own party
run as a third party candidate.
His ego is too big to be defeated by anything other than a resounding trouncing by the American electorate.

1968 Chicago Democratic convention and all.
But your point is well taken.
And I for one, am not happy about the notion of Mr. Obama running against Mr. Gingrinch.
I don't think it would be the "cakewalk" that so many others seem to have convinced themselves it would be, and it would certainly end up being one of the nastiest elections in our history.
We don't need that right now.
I want the bland white guy to run against the bland black guy...
