(12,283 posts)I remember it on the news (I live in L.A.) but I didn't pay a lot of attention to it. However, I did listen to Gascon and I felt his explanation was reasonable. As he said it's still up to the judge to decide.
Gascon has reviewed and resentenced 300 cases and only 4 ended up committing technical violations. That's a very good track record.

Apart from protection of society and correction of behaviors, prison sentencing has several functions:
Justice
Deterent
Retribution
IMO, some crimes are so heinous that the criminals should never be freed.

(10,293 posts)The area I live in has a mental health court with a judge who is knowledgeable. Social workers and mental health counselors are the workers in it. A lot of the public tends to have NO CLUE when it comes to mental health issues and many times has screwed up attitudes towards psych patients and abuse victims. Uninformed members of the public have no business deciding these cases. As a psychiatric social worker, I constantly run into people who are totally ignorant about psychology and mental health. They tend to be scared of my clients. People in fear cannot be fair.
