(27,268 posts)This is hateful and dangerous and theres no excuse for this inexcusable rhetoric
soandso
(1,631 posts)to take campaign and political rhetoric out of context. I don't like the rhetoric but it's common in politics and not to be taken literally. Whoever that guy is, he's talking about votes not a Rwanda style genocide. Things are so heated right now and tweets like that don't cool things down by trying to imply he is talking about mass murder. Sheesh. This is all so stressful.

(31,932 posts)"Hey, did you hear there is a floating pile of garbage in the ocean?.. I think it is called Puerto Rico" did you think that there are piles of trash and banana peels and rotten tomatoes on the streets? You know, garbage... or were people laughing at something else maybe?
Bet most of those people in the audience don't even think Puerto Ricans are US citizens.

(1,631 posts)but I've heard such vile talk before. Rick Wilson (Lincoln Project) comes to mind with, "Somebody needs to put a bullet in Donald Trump". Was he trying to prod a shooting or was it political rhetoric? That's my point.
On my larger point about violence, I'm beginning to feel rather alone in not wanting to see that.

(1,631 posts)is "the moral high ground"? I'm sorry and don't mean to come off as having the moral high ground but I feel these are volatile times we're living through and, no, I don't want to see a civil war here. People are on edge and wound tight and I don't think the US is immune from the kinds of things we see happen around the world. That's all.

(2,372 posts)When they say they will do violence, believe them. We should not seek to do violence, but we are fools if we are unprepared to meet theirs and win. We can no longer preach peace, or practice impotence in the guise of peace, when told boldly that those who oppose them are to be killed.
Thanks for listening to my TED talk.
While I don't care for the rhetoric, it's common in politics and you know he was talking about votes. Taking shit like this out of context is exactly what leads to paranoia and violence. Do you really want that? I don't.

(7,456 posts)There is TONS of evidense this rhetoric has lead to violence. Remember Jan 6th?? "Stand down and STAND BY"???
There's Christ-fascists all over the country calling for "retribution", including Dotards himself.
I'm surrounded by sketchy Duck Dynasty looking motherfuckers driving diesel pickups with giant "FUCK HARRIS" flags flying off the back.
While I fear and loath any violence, I'm prepared to defend myself and my family.

Look, I fully get that there are people itching for violent confrontation and I do not believe that will be good for the future of our country and certainly not for those who commit and are victims of any violence.

"Black jobs." He wasn't being racist. He was just talking about jobs for Black people. Yea, sure. I think everybody knows EXACTLY what he was talking about. Same with this latest doozy from one of his minions. Don't ever, ever, ever think they don't mean what they say or we're taking it out of context. Trust me, his people get the true meaning.
soandso
(1,631 posts)was if it helps anything to respond with violent rhetoric. In my view (not much agreed with), it's better condemn it, to make a note of what's being said but not to fall into one upping it and with the more of the same or even more pointed stuff like talking about being ready to kill someone. I'm not sure people who do actually think about what they're saying and how it can escalate into real life action.

(1,631 posts)You're claiming I've fallen for the normalization of violence because I argue against violence. What sense does that make? I don't want to see a civil war in this country and I honestly believe that most people don't. People talk about killing other people like that's normal and I see that as a bad sign. Hopefully, it's just empty talk but I'm only speaking up to say it's not good. JMHO, obviously, and not one widely shared on this thread, lol.

(18,167 posts)As far as I can see, a few have said they are prepared to defend themselves, but no one is escalating the rhetoric. No one here is suggesting anything remotely like, "Let's get them before they get us!"
The problem, as I see it, is that the rhetoric coming from the 💩 campaign is escalating, becoming more violent, more racist, more hate-filled, and people here on our side are pointing that out because of the fear that while some may understand it to be just "word play," there is a risk that others may take the calls for violence literally. Unfortunately, one person or one small group of persons who do take the speeches literally can spark a conflagration.
It's easy to use the language of violence figuratively -- the Silver team murdered the Gold team, even though no one on either side got hurt -- when the full context is known. There is already enough real physical violence playing out in this race -- the guy who shot up the Democratic campaign office in Tempe, AZ, for instance -- that at least some people are indeed taking the word play literally. And most of that seems to be coming from the other side, not ours.
I live in a semi-rural neighborhood filled with 💩 campaign signs . . . and also filled with people who have guns. I take the rhetoric and the threats it poses seriously, because I know there are people who take the suggestions it offers just as seriously.
soandso
(1,631 posts)which isn't the same as saying things like, "Bring it, I have guns" or whatever. I do understand that people say/write stuff out of anger and have no intention of acting on what they say but I'm just sayin' to stop and think first as in is that what they really want - neighbors shooting each other?

(1,789 posts)This isn't the first time people who are against Trump have been threatened. You think they're joking? Were you alive on Jan6? Did you look at what happened there? They killed people, caused a few so much trauma they committed SUICIDE.
FFS, none of us want violence. We want these people tried, convicted and sent to prison. We don't want to live every day of our lives wondering when they'll come for us.
If you think this won't happen, couldn't happen, then you are either ignorant of history, or a fool.
