(20,906 posts)As an Army MP. He was a tad too old for Infantry. He served in Europe for the duration of WWII aiding British Citizens to the Undergrounds during bombing raids. He served in France as well. For his valor and faithful adherence to the United States and the US Constitution, he was awarded his Citizenship as a recognition of his service. That meant the world to him.
My Grandfather died at the age of 85, 33 years to the day this coming Thanksgiving, Nov.28, 1991. He was a lifelong member of the Westmorland County VFW since 1945. At his funeral in Greensburg in early December, 11 members of the VFW Post, Vietnam Veterans, showed up as the Color Guard. It was also opening day of Deer Hunting Season. I held it together until TAPS was played.
The GOOD GUYS won WWII against Fascism.

Many WWII Veterans, if any remain, would be HORRIFIED to their cores, to what is taking place today.

(20,906 posts)He was awarded 2 Navy Crosses for Bravery.
The first one was awarded when he dove into shark infested waters in the Pacific to fish out sailors who were still alive from the USS Indianapolis. I last saw him in June of 1991 and noticed the scars on his forearms. He told me the story of that and I was in tears.
The 2nd Navy Cross was awarded during the Vietnam War during the Tet Offensive in 1968. He died in 1998. My late Father said that the US Navy sent a low Grade representative, Seaman 1st Class to San Diego for his funeral.

(27,254 posts)He would be flipping out now if he was still alive. Growing up all I heard coming from him was the phase dirty stinkin lousy republicans. He hated Nixon, Reagan and Bush 1.
He passed in 1997 and he wouldnt know our country now. And he used to buy the National enquirer and constantly said t@#$p was a jerk and disliked him.

(24,288 posts)He was a Democrat but would have been heartbroken at how Trump attacked those who served by attacking McCain for being a POW For the life of me I do not see how people can fly a POW flag and Trump flag at the same time

(24,288 posts)from dictatorships.. and look what is trying to regain the office of the Presidency.. a person who would rather spend time with dictators and praise them for their tyrannical style..while demeaning our allies.. I know my Dad would never have believed it either

(3,286 posts)My old man, who was happy to have lived long enough to see TSF elected, had several relatives who fought in WW2 - including his dad and uncle and several of their cousins.
My wife's grandfather fought in the South Pacific and watched half the men in his platoon die in their parachutes over Corregidor.
These people should know best about Nazis and fascists and seem to be overjoyed to vote for this guy. Never underestimate the power of propaganda.
