I still believe there was most likely a debate about what he should have said, with some aides pushing for an apology for the Puerto Rico joke, at least. Trump obviously refused to do that. But if the so-called press conference had been planned all along as just a scam to get media coverage of a repeat of his rally speeches, I think we'd've seen a more energized Trump, obviously pleased with himself for tricking the media. He did use the speech to launch a new lie, that the repulsive MSG hate rally was "a love fest" - but he couldn't summon any energy, or a gloating smile, even for that:
