"Refugees" by Brian Bilston
Lately I've been thinking a lot about the issue of immigration. Polling indicates this is one of the most important issues this cycle, and one that is seen as "good" for Trump and "bad" for Biden/Harris.
The Republicans like to play up issues like terrorism or drug smuggling, and claim they are all for "legal" immigration, but recent incidents have really just exposed them as bigots. They just don't want more people of color coming into the country.
Unfortunately, they've also done a good job erasing a lot of the nuance of this issue conflating asylum seekers with "illegal immigrants".
I was watching a video this morning about the treatment of POWs and refugees at the end of World War 2, and they shared this poem, "Refugees" by Brian Bilston. I had never seen it before, but I really, really like it.
I'll just share the link directly to the author's page: https://brianbilston.com/2016/03/23/refugees/
I would encourage everyone to read it. It is short, though you will read it twice
