The only way the EC will go away is if there's a substantial change in the makeup of Congress and many state legislatures. It's going to take a lot more than a petition.

A start would be figuring out how we're going to get enough votes in Congress to approve an amendment to the Constitution.

Then, figure out how to take back enough state legislatures to approve said amendment.

A petition is going to do nothing toward either of those goals. Everyone already knows where just about everyone else already stands. Changing those minds is where it would need to start.

Besides, it's just a fundraising gimmick. It will always need "just 5 more signatures". If they're going to ask for money, just ask.

We waste an incredible amount of time on the presently impossible. That time would be better spent on the possible, like trying to win the election that's being held in a week.

I've seen so many scams (for lack of a better word) like this. "Just X more signatures..." "We're 98% of the way there..." "If you can refer us to 5 of your family and friends..." and then the fundraising spiel kicks in.

Money makes the world go round.

Eliminating the EC is more like a 25-30 year goal. (Or more?) The amount of change and set up we need is staggering to get there.

They are tools for data harvesting and fund raising.
