I decided to post this, after this experience I had yesterday:
one of them said "so you do you know who you're going to vote for yet?"
what unfolded was surprising.
both i think were learning towards trump because of one thing: they think he's better for the economy.
one mentioned that his 401k went up under Trump. I mentioned that the stock market has been way up under Biden.
they don't watch the news
they haven't heard all the offensive stuff that trump has said and done
I mentioned jan 6 and one of them said, "that was so overblown."
I said "really? I mean they smashed in the windows, broke down the doors, to our Capitol building.
the other guy said "really?"
this showed me there are still some people considering voting for trump, simply because they just have no idea what the F is going on. they don't watch the news. they're not assholes or idiots. they just don't pay attention to the news or politics and they think trump is better on the economy.
I explained that the last time he was in office the only thing he did really for the economy was a huge tax cut that 85% of it went to the rich and it drove up the biggest deficit in the history of our country.
the discussion was respectful
and i'm not sure but i might have gotten one of them to think a bit more about his vote.
that's why i posted this
the bottom line is, there are still people who are reluctantly considering voting for trump and they could possibly benefit from a real conversation with a friend or person they respect instead of listening to a news pundit.

The assumptions are fundamentally all wrong, especially the ones based in stereotypes. We tend to project our own beliefs on others and often insist that we know what should be important to them. We don't.
People vote in myriad ways, and everyone has a different combination of information (or lack thereof), issues, factors and priorities that go into their decision-making. No group is a monolithic bloc, whether it's Trump supporters or Latinos or liberals or however we try to make people fit into little boxes.
The problem is that many of us don't even bother trying to learn anything from how others make these decisions, because we think we already know. I give you credit for making the attempt and hope that it proves to be informative.

(28,836 posts)Your approach is admirable, much more so than I've been in discussions with family and acquaintances about Trump.

But have fun.

(8,853 posts)They heard ALL those Lee Atwater dog whistles. Aunts, Uncles and cousins on my Mom's side. My Mom stayed Democrat along with my Dad. My folks have passed. I'm 63. I've seen enough to know when to conserve my energy.
My family are the only ones I care enough about to battle with. But I don't waste my time trying to persuade them. But I sure as fuck will drag them on my Facebook page for the stupid choices they make. And I alway take time to remind them what a shitmouth bigot grifter trump is, and that they are five-time, soon to be six-time, trump voters whenever they drag Joe or Kamala for something petty and usually false.
Yeah it sucks,. But whatta ya gonna do?

(752 posts)Pretty cut and dry for me. Either they know, or they don't want to know. There is no excuse. The economy was garbage under Trump. Anti-education, anti-science, anti-immigrant, anti-woman, anti-brown person, anti-family values, anti-marriage, anti-christian, anti-constitution. For crying out loud take your pick. This is just a short list. Which one would be acceptable to any thoughtful person?

(5,980 posts)It contains middle class tax hikes. Those are hitting slowly every odd tax year which hit every national election year. I refer to it as the GOP Tax Time Bomb. The other angle is the cobatruction guy never bothered to have an "infrastructure week" and claimed he'd do it soon. He never did as he was incapable of negotiating a deal to get past the Gillibuster in the Senate. Biden git not one but the two largest donestic spending bills through with a 50/50 Senate. T couldnt even try. It hurts talking softly about that spoiled brat Mr Tmp.

Seriously? You used up 10 seconds of your precious time on earth to complain about blue and yellow when it literally is your avatar.
Nice.

(46,202 posts)No, it has nothing to do with the flag. I'm photophobic (light sensitivity). I changed it in Photoshop, to a mint background, with "watermelon" color font. MUCH easier to read.

(8,947 posts)She claims President Biden has ruined the economy. She works at a supermarket and says prices go up constantly.
She also said she doesn't want to live under socialism or communism.
She said she's tired of illegal immigrants being let into the country and given food, housing and benefits.
She claims Biden got this country into "all these wars." I asked her where these so-called wars were taking place.
I also told her I hated that TSF was so cozy with Putin.
I said I didn't want a president who was a rapist or child molester, and she started telling me there are photos of Biden "groping little girls". I replied that I'd never heard of such a thing about him.
Finally we gave up and decided to not argue about it. I'm terrible at debating issues and always end up losing my temper.
The saddest thing is that she used to be a Democrat when she lived in Hudson County. Changed parties when she moved down to Ocean County.
