Hochul predicts Dems will flip at least three House seats

Gov. Kathy Hochul said on Wednesday that Democrats will flip at least three House seats in New York – a subtle acknowledgement that the party is unlikely to flip at least some of the GOP-held swing seats that Democrats’ coordinated campaign is currently targeting. The governor spoke to reporters about the House races following a lead pipe replacement event in Poughkeepsie with local elected officials like Poughkeepsie Mayor Yvonne Flowers, Rep. Pat Ryan and Assembly Member Jonathan Jacobson.

“Minimum three, but make sure you put Tom Suozzi in my win column,” Hochul said, adding that she expected Democrats to win “more than you think” in next week’s election. Rep. Tom Suozzi was the first Democrat to flip a seat this cycle, beating Republican nominee Mazi Pilip in a special election for the 3rd Congressional District in February. Democrats are hoping to repeat the feat in neighboring districts on Long Island and as far north as Syracuse.

A year ago, Hochul said that Democrats would pick up five seats in the House during the 2024 cycle. This year, the coordinated campaign that Hochul has helped lead this year has been targeting five vulnerable GOP incumbents: Rep. Nick LaLota in the 1st Congressional District, Rep. Anthony D’Esposito in the 4th Congressional District, Rep. Mike Lawler in the 17th Congressional District, Rep. Marc Molinaro in the 19th Congressional District and Rep. Brandon Williams in the 22nd Congressional District.

Hochul was mum on exactly which three districts she believed were still flippable, but polling and the partisan lean of the districts suggest the party's best bets to grow its ranks are Laura Gillen in the 4th Congressional District, Josh Riley in the 19th Congressional District and state Sen. John Mannion in the 22nd Congressional District. Recent polls show former CNN anchor John Avlon trailing LaLota in the 1st Congressional District and former Rep. Mondaire Jones trailing Lawler in the 17th Congressional District.

2. But in Maryland-6 the news is nerve-wracking

Democrat April Delaney is behind (though not by much) Repub Neil Parrott. Parrott's a lovely fellow, he wants to tattoo babies who are HIV positive. It'll be close, democrat David Trone beat Parrott last time but only by a couple of hundred votes. Maryland is a blue state but it has its red sections. I don't want this democratic seat to flip. At least democrat Delaney is flooding the airwaves with the truth about genuine slime Parrott but it should have happened earlier.

PS: I'm new here and am trying to find a Maryland sub, particulary for the above race to see if any Marylanders share my concern. Didn't mean to hijack. We HAVE to have the House!

4. MD6 will be tough, but remember it's a new district.

I used to live in MD6 back in the Beverly Byron days (she was more conservative than her Republican CD-8 neighbor Morella), it's D because of a prior gerrymander dipping to Potomac and taking core MoCo/CD8 areas to dilute the Raskin seat. There was a court case resulting in redistricting, swapping some of Montgomery for Frederick Co.

I'm pretty surprised that a somewhat compact CD6 is even tied. Hopefully we get good turnout in suburban demographics in the district, if we do we'll bag it.

Welcome to DU.

Thanks. We need Hagerstown and Frederick to really show up. My folks live in southern Washington (rural) County and you could build another Taj Mahal with the number of Parrott signs. Thanks for the welcome.

6. I am disappointed in Hochul...she tried to put a conservative justice on the New York Top court.

Supreme Court (would have flipped the court to conservative) and has done nothings to fix the bad district map. We have already flipped some states in special elections and I think Roe will help us pick up seats. New Yorkers need to be aware that if Trump goes in, and gains Congress, we are looking at 50 state ban on abortion.

'An Absolute Disaster': Hochul Nominates Anti-Choice, Anti-Union Judge to Lead New York's Top Court. "The blast radius here is huge, with national implications," said one observer. "The New York Democratic Party's ineptitude is fast becoming a national crisis."

Thank God the legislature stopped her. I think she should be primaryed next time.
