A pregnant teenager died after trying to get care in three visits to Texas emergency rooms

Candace Fails screamed for someone in the Texas hospital to help her pregnant daughter. “Do something,” she pleaded, on the morning of Oct. 29, 2023.

Nevaeh Crain was crying in pain, too weak to walk, blood staining her thighs. Feverish and vomiting the day of her baby shower, the 18-year-old had gone to two different emergency rooms within 12 hours, returning home each time worse than before.

The first hospital diagnosed her with strep throat without investigating her sharp abdominal cramps. At the second, she screened positive for sepsis, a life-threatening and fast-moving reaction to an infection, medical records show. But doctors said her six-month fetus had a heartbeat and that Crain was fine to leave.

Now on Crain’s third hospital visit, an obstetrician insisted on two ultrasounds to “confirm fetal demise,” a nurse wrote, before moving her to intensive care.

By then, more than two hours after her arrival, Crain’s blood pressure had plummeted and a nurse had noted that her lips were “blue and dusky.” Her organs began failing. Hours later, she was dead.

Then they were both Pro-What-happened-to-them.

They are always in favor of denying care to others until they, themselves, are affected, and then they realize too late just what they were advocating.

I wonder if the dead girl's mother is still as fervently anti-choice as she was. My bet is yes.

But that is part of this battle. If most of us want to have access to life saving procedures, we are more pro-life than the zealots. We apparently can't take the zealots off of the SCOTUS. But we can put into law "the choice to live".

They parade around with their "pro-life" signs, as if anyone were supposed to take that seriously. They support the death penalty, eat the flesh of animals they kill for that purpose, and gleefully watch other humans die because their own sadism can be justified as "God's will," which conveniently happens to be identical to their own every whim. But, sure, they're "pro-life."

This should be the top story in every newscast in the country!
Ireland changed their laws after one woman died. No doubt there were many more over the years, but the publicity of her death outraged the public and the laws were changed. How many women in America will it take? Or are we really that expendable?

When black and brown women die in Texas it does not matter. White teens start to die, it matters. When a white mother of 3 dies, suddenly, it will really matter. It should not be this way, but it’s Texas so eventually, it will matter. When the white woman deaths become more common, the politicians will start to look for a fix. Not until then though.

While they comfort the rich, neglect the poor, deny health care to the sick, demonize the stranger, and worship a completely amoral orange idol as a servant of God.

It is they, not liberals, who give Christians a bad name and turn off people who want nothing to do with such brazen hypocrisy.

I imagined myself as that poor mother SCREAMING for someone to help her daughter. O.M.G. They would have had to hold me back to keep me from killing someone with my bare hands. (I may be little, but I am FIERCE when my Mama Lion is awakened.) My heart goes out to that poor woman. Her teenage daughter died needlessly. FOR NO REASON! NONE.
WHY????? The fetus obviously wouldn't survive if she died, so what was the fricking point?

This has to stop. This is so wrong. It literally makes no sense in any possible way. This is CRUEL, inhumane, completely lacking in both compassion and logic. It is insane.

And I have to wonder, if this happened a YEAR ago, WHY are we just now hearing about it? Did it just take her family that long to heal enough to be able to tell their story?

OK. I have to stop. I need to sleep.

In states with abortion bans, such patients are sometimes bounced between hospitals like “hot potatoes,” with health care providers reluctant to participate in treatment that could attract a prosecutor, doctors told ProPublica. In some cases, medical teams are wasting precious time debating legalities and creating documentation, preparing for the possibility that they’ll need to explain their actions to a jury and judge.

... Fails and Crain believed abortion was morally wrong. The teen could only support it in the context of rape or life-threatening illness, she used to tell her mother. They didn’t care whether the government banned it, just how their Christian faith guided their own actions.

When they discovered Crain was pregnant with a girl, the two talked endlessly about the little dresses they could buy, what kind of mother she would be. Crain landed on the name Lillian. Fails could not wait to meet her.

But when her daughter got sick, Fails expected that doctors had an obligation to do everything in their power to stave off a potentially deadly emergency, even if that meant losing Lillian. In her view, they were more concerned with checking the fetal heartbeat than attending to Crain ...

On the morning of their baby shower, Oct. 28, 2023, Crain woke with a headache. Her mom decorated the house with pink balloons and Crain laid out Halloween-themed platters. Soon, nausea set in. Crain started vomiting and was running a fever ...

Texas is conflating a miscarriage with abortion. The fetus is or will soon be dead during a miscarriage. Do they think God will somehow perform a miracle and save it? These people don’t have the faintest understanding of female anatomy and gestation.

It is completely inexplicable to me how doctors are allowing patients to needlessly die. I’m astounded that there don’t seem to be organized lawsuits against this. I can’t imagine the horror that this girl’s mother must have experienced being forced to watch her daughter die for no reason - even if she is part of the problem. This is barbaric.
