Stop "win-washing"

The race is NOT over, the election is NOT finished.

Too many races have been lost when the one who thought they won starts celebrating before the finish line and gets beaten at the line.

Keep going!! I was out circulating today to get out the vote. EVERY VOTE.

On election night, I paused to check TV reports of results coming in from Eastern states where polls had closed. Other callers remained on the phones, still calling western states as the East and Midwest results were being reported.

The callers were in a separate room from the TV so they did not know how things were going. We finally had to tell them that they should join us to watch McCain's concession speech and Obama's victory appearance.

In 2016, I had a bad feeling on the Monday before the election - I didn't think that Clinton was going to win it. There was a lot of arrogance at work on the Dem side, Clinton's campaign was too divisive, too many people were still bitter about Sanders, and it seemed like every week there was just one more thing coming out of right field that likely , yet I also had a strong feeling that Trump was doing a lot better than the polls indicated.

2024, on the other hand, was getting worrisome through July, then Biden withdrew in favor of Kamala. She has, since then, waged one of the most flawless campaigns I've seen in forty years. She's built coalitions, she has avoided any scandal, she has defined her opponent far more than Trump was able to define her, she has even managed to make the media sit up and beg, despite the deck being very much stacked against her, and she has done it with a laugh and a smile. Trump, on the other hand, has gone from one dumpster fire to another, quite literally in one case, has watched as his crowds have dwindled so that he can't even fit small venues, and has outstayed his welcome.

If she loses after all that, it's because the system has become so compromised that no one could fairly win against Trump, yet, what I'm seeing is that Trump's campaign staff is already shopping their resumes. This is not the sign of a campaign that thinks it's going to win, or even get within challenging distance.

Now, it's possible that the polls are perfectly correct, that the race is incredibly tight, and Trump could pull off an EC upset, but neither the evidence nor the vibes mesh up with this particular scenario. I don't believe it's going to be a blowout, but nor do I think there will be any doubt that she won, except in Trump's Aderall-ravaged mind.

If Democrats were to prematurely claim it's over and then sit on our asses doing nothing, then that would be insane.

But that's not what's happening.

Whereas, Democrats boldly predicting that we're going to win (or expressing optimism that we're going to win), and for very sound reasons, but nonetheless continuing to work our asses off until the last vote is cast is confidence.

That IS happening.

Even the Harris-Walz campaign no longer consider themselves underdogs.

I don't recall ever reading even one post at DU (or anywhere else for that matter) in which someone predicted a Harris win and then advocated (or even implied) that Democrats should prematurely stop campaigning and stop voting. So, in my opinion, the OP is based on a false premise.

I see momentum, the "bandwagon' effect, as much more important. Do people really stop working because they think we are ahead? Maybe in sports that applies, I dunno. You know what I am more worried about? People disengaging after a Harris win, which is what I think happened in 2008-2010. The important work starts after the election.

By the way, I think Harris has handled this perfectly. She says "we are the underdog" to address your concerns, but then says "make no mistake, we will win" to keep the momentum going.

Dewey hardly campaigned at all. We don't have that problem with Harris/Walz, to say the least. Here is a interesting tidbit from the 1948 race. Left wing progressive Henry Wallace got 1,157,172 votes. Openly racist right winger Strom Thurmond got fewer than that - 1,119,021. Yet Thurmond got 39 electoral votes and Wallace got none. (Thurmond carried Louisiana, South Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi). Gotta love that electoral college.

In the 2016 cycle many of us were disappointed that Clinton did not give Michigan more attention. It seemed her campaign took Michigan for granted.

ll of these cliches..."keep your eyes on the prize" etc. Reminds me of a sign in a shop I worked in.

"Keep your eye on the ball, your shoulder to the wheel and your ear to the ground. Now, try to work in that position!"
