WaPo - Opinion What legacy media got right this election

We’ve made our share of mistakes, but readers of traditional media understand the stakes of this election.

Two-and-a-half cheers for traditional, “legacy” news media this election.

Sure, everyone hates us. As the interwebs (and this newspaper’s owner) keep reminding me, trust in news organizations has reached all-time lows. When a major party’s presidential candidate muses about having reporters locked up or murdered, crowds cheer. Meanwhile, our audiences have been siphoned off by upstart news brands or social media.

And Lord knows we (myself included) have made our share of mistakes.

But you know what? If you had consumed all your election news this year exclusively from The Post, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal or other journalistic dinosaurs, you’d probably be well-informed. You’d have a sense of what the stakes are this election. You might even know what the candidates stand for! The same cannot be said if you instead primarily relied on TikTok influencers, random bros with podcasts or Discord streams, and Elon Musk’s X platform.

For all our faults, traditional journalists have still managed to unearth and explain what the candidates stand for and how their agendas would affect regular Americans. Readers often claim the media “won’t cover” some critical issue or other, but such kibitzers probably know about the story in question only because some hardworking journalist excavated it.

..."TikTok influencers, random bros with podcasts or Discord streams, and Elon Musk’s X platform" and claiming that somehow makes them good journalists?

Weird.

believe that President Obama wasn't a citizen, or why a significant number believe trump won the election in 2020.

I would also add fox and other extreme outlets as purveyors of intentional misinformation.

for one thing. The Epstein story wasn't front page news then, however I recall hearing about it even as far back as then, So yeah, print and cable news journalists had a hand in creating this monster and their standing in mistrust.

They have peddled a lot of bullshit to their readers, they definitely need better editors to ensure well researched and truth are a part of the reporters stories because that has not been the case. I have not turned to tic tok for my news but have turned to really good independent journalists and the legacy media is going to lose to those people.

4. Not so fast with the self praise..you devoted years to sane washing Trump's verbal vomit..

selling his toxic bilge as normal political discourse..you allied with Trump, trashing Joe Biden, questioning his cognitive ability, ridiculing his walk/talk while you ignored Trump's nonsensical profane rambling, his never-ending stream of lies, his racist/antisemitic slurs, ...I don't remember your outrage when he threatened judges and their families, prosecutors, witnesses, court clerks, lawyers, reporters, and demeaned E. Jean Carroll?...you know why I don't remember?..because it didn't exist...

so now you think you can bullshit us into believing you did a damn fine job covering the malicious evil that is Trump?...STFU

The utter false equivalency and sane-washing spread by the "traditional media" is off-the-charts. When is the last time you heard someone from the "traditional media" more than casually mention that Trump is an adjudicated rapist, or that he has been convicted of 34 felonies, or that he stole 11,000 pages of classified documents and was in contact with the leader of an adversary nation?

Remember 2-16 with Comey "reopened" the investigation into Hillary's emails... you know, the one's she might have accidentally retained? The media feeding frenzy was EPIC. Trump's transgressios? Barely a yawn.

So spare me the self-congratulations.

2.5 cheers? Think again. You're lucky to get one.
