What I have gleamed from a few articles indicates a close race could take until...
Arizona - Unknown
Georgia - Tuesday or Wednesday
Michigan - Friday
Nevada - Saturday
North Carolina - Tuesday or Wednesday
Pennsylvania - Friday
Wisconsin - Tuesday or Wednesday
Buckle in, and here's hoping the MAGAts don't descend on the vote counters.

(62,534 posts)But they will be counted after the polls close. But yeah we should get strong results maybe 3-4 hours after the polls close there.

(14 posts)I really don't get it. We have technology that makes counting votes faster than ever and more people than ever have voted early. Are a lot of these states just trying to make early excuses for being incompetent? The only thing I can understand for why it would take days to get the results is if it was so close that the uncounted mail in ballots and or provisional ballots would be enough to make a difference in the outcome. Then I get it.. But a lot of states are claming they are going to have problems before problems even occur.

(12,920 posts)Some stayes do not allow counting absentee ballots (mail in) until after the polls close or until the following day. Provisional ballots are counted/not counted after election day.

(42 posts)A lot of states aren't allowed to start counting the mail-in votes until after the same-day voting is counted. And the proportion of mail-in voting is pretty significant at this point. It's so much more convenient for voters that some areas are almost solely mail-in now.

(62,534 posts)They began opening the ballots at 7am in PA, and will stacks upon stacks of ballots ready to go into the counting machines as soon as the polls close.

(42 posts)It's an even bigger phenomenon this year:
"There are a number of reasons it can take longer for ballots to be counted in some states, including the rise of mail-in voting, an option taken by nearly one-third of voters nationwide during the 2022 midterm elections, according to the MIT Election Lab. Some states allow mail-in ballots to be counted before Election Day, while others do not allow poll workers to start counting those ballots until in-person voting has come to an end."
See the link below for a (swing) state-by-state breakdown of the counting laws.

(10,714 posts)NC counts pretty early and from what I have read Georgia is going to be quick as well, so we'll know pretty fast unless it is so close in those states that we have to wait for every vote to be counted. The margins of victory in other states should also be a big clue.

(23,641 posts)I think NC basically cements it before PA is called. WI, MI, and NV get called by midnight.

(461 posts)We won't know the vote totals everywhere but it won't matter, VP Harris will have this locked up by 7:30 or 8:30 at the latest but you won't hear that until midnight, that said you're going to wake up to VP Harris being President Elect Harris

(28,382 posts)the states saying it will be days for the final results, are referring to all of the other things/candidates/issues/etc that are on ballots in some states. The Arizona ballot is four pages. I don't know about the other states on that list, but I suspect it's something similar.
There's also the issue of when absentee or mailed-in ballots are counted. Waiting until the close of the polls to start counting them is truly dumb in my opinion, but what do I know?
And yes, the notion that this is a remotely close race at the top is utter nonsense.
