There is no way that this race would be close if we lived in an educated or third world country.

(9,339 posts)The Democrats get hit HARD by Republican AND far-left propaganda--the latter especially offensive because it STILL plays on that self-serving "both parties are the same so I'm going to vote 3rd party or just stay home, THAT'LL show 'em" garbage. (smh)

(5,545 posts)Before Trump only Iran and Libya talked about an alternative to the dollar as reserve currency. During Trump even Germany and France talked about it.
If the Republicans tank Social Security millions of seniors will be forced to sell their homes into a market spiraling downward in order to get money for their living expenses. Seniors will lose their major asset and young people will lose their inheritance. The houses will be bought up in bulk for pennies on the dollar in cash by hedge funds.
If the dollar loses reserve currency status inflation will truly ravage the US economy. Bitcoin may skyrocket. The ultimate style over substance.
If the Republicans get control the US will look far different in the future.

I think there was a silent Trump voter that had already made up their minds two or three years ago. And the plethora of unchecked disinformation against Democrats continually reinforced their delusions. They were just waiting for Nov 2024 to mark the x.

(15,771 posts)It takes so long to count how many millions of people's votes?
I understand that we want the transparency and that everybody needs to be able to see the votes actually being counted but watching how the sausage is made is not always a good thing. I think it tends to lead people especially those that are less educated or informed to get conspiratorial.
Then again, if we didn't see all of this unfolding before our eyes would we believe it?
Democracy is a wonderful idea and concept, it's just so hard to implement in a large scale. And then you add in the disinformation from other places and social media and all the other bullshit that we have to deal with today that they didn't have to deal with 200 years ago.. and it's going to look like a clusterfuck.
I personally agree with you though I don't think things are going to be actually called until a couple of days. And all of us running around here with our hair on fire because of what's going on tonight is no different than Trump saying at midnight eastern time that he won. Don't give them the satisfaction!

(9,914 posts)I've been shouting at Rachel and the gang all night that "it's because of the media slant", and that the republicans yanked civics/social studies out of schools.
Republicans are really bad at governing, but they're genius at being persevering for the long game. They've been working on this moment for years, and trump made it all possible in 4 short years.

In 'Defectors,' journalist Paola Ramos explores the effects of Trumpism on the Latino vote

Portrait of Pamela Avila
By Pamela Avila for USA TODAY
In "Defectors: The Rise of the Latino Far Right and What It Means for America," Paola Ramos explores how race, identity and political trauma have ignited a far-right sentiment among Latinos and how this inconspicuous group is shaping American politics.
Latinos are not a monolith.
We've heard that time and again, particularly when it comes to decoding the "Latino vote" during an election year. And time and again, the 63 million Hispanics or Latinos living in the U.S. (36 million of which are eligible to vote) have proven that very sentiment right. In 2020, Donald Trump won a higher percentage of the Latino vote than he did in 2016, and according to a recent Pew Research Center report, that number continues to shift.
So, despite Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric and border policies, why are Latinos tempted to vote against their own community? Why do Latinos feel comfortable among the far-right? What roles do tribalism, trauma and traditionalism play in all of this, and why should we listen to this growing group of voters?
Those are all questions Emmy-winning journalist Paola Ramos seeks to answer in "Defectors: The Rise of the Latino Far Right and What It Means for America" (Pantheon, pp. 256, out now).
The Telemudno News and MSNBC contributor's follow-up to "Finding Latin-X: In Search of the Voices Redefining Latino Identity" explores how race, identity and political trauma have ignited a far-right sentiment among Latinos and how this group is shaping American politics.

(894 posts)All of our U.S. presidents have been white males except for Obama.
None of our U.S. presidents have been female.
But a black female president? Both demographics go against America's voting history.
Given the above, it's looking like we would have had a better chance if Biden had stayed in the race if for no other reason than he's a white male. Purely in terms of race and gender (despite being continually hounded by the news media about his age and his gaffes) he would've been more electable than Harris (I suspect that Biden himself understood this even though he would've never come out and said it).
If Trump does win, the reason I miscalculated is that I thought that, given how extremely awful he is and how much of a threat to democracy he poses, Kamala Harris, though a black female, would be able to defeat him (she still might win, even though at the moment things don't seem to be trending in her favor in the battleground states).
