Do I have this right? Trump got 73 million this time and 74 million in 2020.
Harris got 68 million compared to Biden's 81 million.
155 million compared to 141 million Tuesday.
Did 14 million less people vote?
I thought there were record voter registration and record turn out?

You could always read the other dozen threads on this same question to see what people think.

(1,665 posts)I'm not a conspiracy type of person, but this disparity of 68 millionn to 81 million just seems so way off the mark. There was so much enthusiasm out there. So many new voters. To me, this 14 million difference, is a red flag that needs to be investigated.

(10,599 posts)You must be confusing our party for the one run by repubs.
They would be spending the next century calling for investigations.

(19,900 posts)I think barely 60% of California is in.
It will take a week or so to have a clear picture on turnout.

(46,142 posts)The total might be less than 2020, but it's not going to be anywhere near 14 million.

If I had to take a wild guess? A lot of people just didn't see anything that motivated them, or they were just sick and damned tired of the whole thing.
There are also a lot of areas (like mine) where Democrats just stay home because they know their votes won't make a difference. The red is just too large to overcome here. I always try to convince them otherwise, but it is rarely effective. That is the normal though, not just this election so who knows.

(2,560 posts)He responded that they are still counting votes, especially on the West Coast, especially in California. They are notoriously slow about counting votes in that state, Thom said. That's why there are still several House races there not called. So, long story short, we don't know yet how many votes were cast in this election. I remember in 2020 in Pennsylvania they called that state for Biden on Saturday, four days after the election, and that was what put him over the top. I wish that could still happen this year.

Add disinterested voters, votes to come, etc., and we are close to missing votes.
Whatever, we lost.

(10,833 posts)Trump was telling people to inject bleach, take horse tranquilizers, hospitals and doctors were overwhelmed, medical supplies weren't available, bodies were stored in refrigerated trucks on city streets and they voted because they were worried that they were going to die.
In 2024 the same people were not worried about their own imminent deaths and as far as anyone else is concerned they just didn't care.

(97 posts)People thought Hillary was going to win by a landslide, so a lot of people didn't bother to vote.

(28,836 posts)There was record early voting in some places.
CA isn't done counting so there are at least a few million more there.
It's still going to be short of 2020, but 2020 was an unusual cycle.
Trump is going to get about what he got in 2020.
Harris is going to fall short maybe 7 million from Biden's 2020 total. Part of the reason is that she simply may not have been able to put together a similar coalition. He was able to get a lot of independents, moderates, and some Rs.

(3,982 posts)Shouted down people who tried to post statistical information that showed cause for concern, and instead were seduced by the Anecdotal Fallacy, thinking what they heard about Swifites or Beyoncé or an exchange at CostCo or a suspicious lack of Trump signs that they swear were there in previous elections or the kids with tattoos in line to early vote showed a wave of unprecedented enthusiasm and motivation.
The reason so many are shocked is that a lot of them werent really paying attention, not in the ways that matter.

(7,401 posts)2024 in person voting was off the charts.
2020 was A LOT more absentee votes. (Covid)
So it FELT like a monster turnout. I was there and can tell you poll workers were exhausted. However, when the dust settled, the total vote count was down 13%.
I live in deep red Ohio. Trump's total vote count was down by 1000s. The % of Dem votes went up slightly, but not enough.
5% of Trump voters also voted for Sherrod Brown.
That's just for my N. of Cincy county. Probably not an abstract of the nation so take it for what little it is worth.

(1,181 posts)Which would put her at 9-10M votes behind Bidens total. Everyone is looking for some reason but is likely multi-fold:
1) Misogyny - Some Dems wont vote for a woman
2) Racism - Some Dems wont vote for POC
3) Voter suppression
4) X disinformation; Twitter at least tried to keep out some BS.
5) Gaza
Im sure theres more.
