Fuck this empathy that people on the left are supposed to have. The idiotic MAGA folk brought this on themselves despite everyone on the left screaming it from the heavens. 2025-2029 are going to be horrendous for everyone except the 1%ers. At least our side of the house knows what's coming and we will be prepared to react as best we can. MAGA can suffer for all I care as their tears and complaints will only make me smile.

The super rich benefit from recessions and depressions.
They buy up the now super cheap stock at firesale prices, and profit when the stock eventually goes back up.
J.P. Getty and Joe Kennedy did this during the Depression and obtained great wealth.

Hundreds of thousands of unwanted children born into poverty. The resulting drug addiction and crime. No healthcare. Unaffordable food, clothing, and shelter.

DeSantis program gives up to $9000 PER CHILD to families that “homeschool”. So if you have 4-5 kids, that’s $36,000 to $45,000 per year. He says that Florida has more homeschooled kids than any other state in the country — 155,000 of them.

https://www.orlandoweekly.com/news/floridas-home-school-voucher-program-is-expected-to-double-in-size-next-year-36972030

They can use the money for TVs (up to 55”…), kayaks, theme parks…swing sets, stationary bikes, treadmills, surfboards, woodworking supplies, animal husbandry supplies, gardening supplies… etc.

I can't believe how many people I have heard saying "China will pay the tariffs, not us".

They really thought that if there is a 100% tariff on an item some company in China would sell it for $20 and then pay a $20 tariff.

No more ACA? Thousands will become homeless as medical debt wipes them out. Many more will just die because they can’t afford routine checkups.
Mass deportations? Thousands of families broken up. Food costs through the roof as crops rot in the fields.
Tariffs? We pay those as corporations pass the costs. China pays nothing.

Most goods imported from China will still be cheaper to make there than in the U.S. A lot of the stuff we don’t even manufacture in the U.S. anymore. Not only that but, with unemployment at 4% there aren’t enough free workers to expand production much anyway. And that 4% is before we deport 11 million or 20 million or 30 million people.

Deporting that many people will lead to a housing glut that tanks residential real estate values. There is not one good thing that will come out of Trump’s policies.

Most goods imported from China will still be cheaper to make there than in the U.S. A

as well as, as you say, not feasible to make in the US anyway.

People are making handwaving type args about market forces and the like but a lot of the effect is going to be pure cost pressure on the consumers of those goods. For a while, at least. And a massive grifting opportunity for favorable tariff rates for various nations and officials of the US government setting those rates.

I hadn't been at this job for too long, and it hadn't had union certification all that long, either. We were in contract talks...blah blah blah. It seemed to the members (of which there were only 9 in our whole bargaining unit) that I knew what I was talking about, so they voted as I suggested....both to strike, and to end the strike. Seemed like a no-brainer to me. We'd proved our point and would strike if necessary, and the first year of a 3-year contract more than paid for the strike.

Anyway.

After the dust settled, I was talking with one of the management team with whom I got along famously, and it came to light that their bargaining team didn't know some very basic things about labour law in BC. Unbelievable.

It was a great job, in a very weird point in history. With the seniority raises (5% every 6 months until you qualified to take the national tech. certification exam and were then at 100% of top rate) and the contract raises that created the various tiers of wages, I made almost exactly triple my starting wage after 5 years and passing the cert. exam. You don't find deals like that any more.
