Can someone answer this question about the election?

Ever since Trump lost in 2020 and launched the insurrection, followed by 4 years of election denial, we knew he would try again in 2024. For Jan. 6 and other crimes, he could have been arrested and charged with federal crimes by Merrick Garland’s DOJ. In fact, John Dean (Nixon’s lawyer of Watergate fame) said that’s exactly what should have happened. We’ve seen this train barreling down the tracks for 4 years. I blame Garland for allowing this to happen. WHY didn’t the DOJ charge Trump back in 2021 and diligently pursue prosecution? I haven’t heard anyone address this obvious question.

with the thought that the criminal charges would drag him down and give Democrats a leg up in this election — a catastrophic strategic failure.

IMO, Garland lacked the strength to do his job. As he said when he appointed Smith, he was afraid of the appearance of partisanship. That notion underlies his entire administration, including prosecuting Hunter Biden. He bent over backward for the GOP.

He should have indicted Trump back then, but he dragged his feet. When he finally appointed Smith, he said he wouldn't directly prosecute because of the appearance of partisanship. That said everything about the reasons for his inaction. He is an awful AG.
