Going full expat from the U.S. is tricky. Here’s an easier option.

For many Americans, election season is an anxious time. Packing up and heading abroad may seem like one attractive option — one reason online searches for “how to move abroad” tick up around this time every four years.

The catch: Going full expat is complicated and often expensive. As The Washington Post’s own Department of Data reported, only a tiny number of Americans move abroad for political reasons. But there’s an easier, lower-risk option — becoming a digital nomad.

Dozens of countries offer a digital nomad visa, sometimes referred to as a remote working visa. It’s a way to live in a foreign country for a stretch, usually somewhere between six months and two years, as long as you prove you’re earning a sufficient income through remote work.

Before 2020, only about a half-dozen nations (pioneered by Estonia) offered some variation of this visa. But now more than 50 nations do, thanks to the spread of high-speed internet and the pandemic’s remote-work legacy.

It still hasn't dawned on the the Washington Post that people who "move abroad" as a result of Trump will be fleeing for their lives, not taking a jaunt across the pond because they find the make-up of Congress distasteful. They will be fleeing the country to avoid being imprisoned and murdered by the MAGA state apparatus and its paramilitaries.

Holy Jesus people really don't get it.
