WASHINGTON President-elect Donald Trump announced late Sunday that Tom Homan, the former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement who backed his controversial "zero tolerance" policy, will be his administration's "border czar."
"I am pleased to announce that the Former ICE Director, and stalwart on Border Control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration, in charge of our Nations Borders ('The Border Czar'), including, but not limited to, the Southern Border, the Northern Border, all Maritime, and Aviation Security," Trump said on Truth Social.
"Ive known Tom for a long time, and there is nobody better at policing and controlling our Borders," the post continued. "Likewise, Tom Homan will be in charge of all Deportation of Illegal Aliens back to their Country of Origin. Congratulations to Tom. I have no doubt he will do a fantastic, and long awaited for, job."
Homan touts hard-line immigration views and previously vowed to run the biggest deportation force this country has ever seen.
He was an early supporter of the Trump administrations zero tolerance policy, which led to thousands of families being separated at the southern border. Trump eventually signed an executive order in 2018 reversing the family separation policy after public outcry.

(42,033 posts)Let me say this first, I have absolutely no idea how to address the issue of illegal immigration. Countries around the world, not only the United States, haven't figured out how to stem illegal immigration. But one thing I do know is that rounding up approximately 11,000,0000 people and deporting them in mass is not the answer. Especially when we are talking about people who have been here a long time and are contributing to the country in positive and productive ways, ways in which our economy has become dependant.
This guy...Tom Homan...you can see the heartlessness and inhumanity in his face. There should be little doubt that he will approach his new job with brutality.

(19,382 posts)What they are going to do is pass a federal law that will stop all funding going to anybody in the country illegally. How that affects the local and state funding I dont know. But thats my prediction.

(69,532 posts)net, will stretch further,
This Homan guy is a POS, he loved the idea of putting children in cages. The swamp dwellers are surfacing. Cruelty is their thing. And I wouldn't put it past that these people who they are going after will seek revenge on these bastards all who did this to them.
I wonder if the International Criminal Court will even be relevant to go after American fascists????

Over populated world, and compassion is not in a lot of people's mind.

(17,146 posts)Maybe they don't meet the legal definition, but they are fleeing their home countries with good reason. The solution has to include helping those countries, like some kind of Marshall Plan or whatever. Or maybe paying countries along the way to settle them, with jobs, housing, etc. Also MORE legal immigration. But the cruelty IS the point with Trumpians. They don't care how many people die, but they also won't actually help these nations succeed in any other way, either and they will not care when food starts to rot in the fields because they have kept the workers out.

Also, many of these people simply hate poor people, and we know undocumented are often poor. They don't see poor people as human.

... He was nominated by Trump in November 2017 to be the permanent director of ICE, but the Senate never acted on it.
He officially retired from ICE in 2018 ...
He is currently a visiting fellow with the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank based in Washington, D.C. He also contributed to Project 2025s Mandate for Leadership book ...
In his role, he lacks the legal authority over the federal agencies involved in managing the border. So he will have to go through those who are confirmed by the upper chamber or those installed as acting officials or through recess appointments ...

... An estimated 4,500-5,000 children and their parents are covered under this settlement.
The government will continue to identify families that were separated, fund their reunification in the U.S., and provide a pathway for them to seek asylum here.
Families will have access to benefits to get them on their feet, such as work authorization, housing and legal assistance, and medical services.
The government is barred from reenacting the zero-tolerance policy over the next eight years ...

(12,533 posts)No one had to worry about child separation because he anticipates whole families being deported together, illegal or not.
I've read a number of Mike Madrid's blog posts (former Republican, Never Trumper, political data analyst). He has stated innumerable times that Hispanics voting for Trump do not believe the draconian deportation plans apply to them.
We're all about to find out. The hard way.
