I think it was summer 2023 she said she didn't know if her future was in Politics anymore. She has plenty of other opportunities no doubt.

(112,602 posts)There is misogyny. There is racism. There is BOTH on steroids.
I like AOC. Don't get me wrong, but I am feeling rather sober (and somber) about the situation right now and I really don't see much changing in 3 1/2 years.
Yorkie Mom

(770 posts)I think the Republicans did and democrats felt they needed to protect woman, LGBTQ, etc do maybe we came across as playing identity politics because we fought for those identities.

(6,643 posts)Identity politics is a GOP talking point to demonize Democrats for embracing diversity and inclusion. Only racist white people use the term.

Also, a lot of people here HATE her.

(128,793 posts)If women as accomplished and competent as Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris can't beat a con man, rapist and all-around moral slagheap like Trump, I don't see how any woman is electable unless a lot of things change in this country.

Bettie
(19,219 posts)we also have to watch our messaging, not show too much support for people who aren't white, male, and Christian...
If that's who we're going to support, well, it's a big change. We can't be the party of women, people of color, GLBT+, etc. Just white men because white men require exclusivity. They need to be the first and only priority.
So, yeah, I get it, we will have only white male, "centrist" candidates. I don't have to like that we're not going to be a party of diversity anymore though.

So, a country run exclusively by rich white men.
It will be fine for white men. Not so much for anyone else.

Let's not put off to four years from now what we've failed to do up to this point: Like pay attention to today. To plan wisely. To act like we have kids and grandkids watching us.

(45,963 posts)In 2018 she was elected with 78.2 percent of the vote in a non-presidential year
In 2020 she was re-elected with 71.6 of the vote in a presidential year
In 2022 she was re-elected with 70.6 of the vote in a non-presidential year.
In 2024, she was re-elected with 68.9 percent of the vote in a presidential year.

She should go for Schumer's seat the next time it's available.
But given how she has been demonized she has her work cut out to broaden her appeal.

(1,617 posts)Do not underestimate the power of having an A-tier political candidate.
B & C tier candidates repeat the policy and have no means to adapt and think on their feet. They stick to the approved messages, avoid mistakes, and rely on advertising and party infrastructure to win. The media and public rip them apart if they are put in a challenging circumstance.
A-tier candidates can change the entire party platform with a perfectly placed remark. They flummox the old party leadership but are tolerated because they deliver repeated victories and buoy down-ballot candidates. Under any circumstance that they're in the public eye they are capable of advancing their causes.
AOC is A tier. It'd be foolish to discourage her from running if she chose to.

Gavin Newsom or someone like that has to be the nominee if we ever have another election.
Hillary Clinton was the most qualified candidate to ever run in this countrys history and she lost to the least qualified person ever.

(1,869 posts)the nominee in 2028 is going to wind up being a white moderate male because voters are going to learn from the racism and sexism of general election voters in 2016 and 2024 and try to nominate someone who has a shot at winning the general. It breaks me heart to know this, thinking about the amazing leadership and brilliant minds we have in people like Elizabeth Warren, Stacey Abrams, AOC, Gretchen Witmer, Amy Klobuchar... but if we could not get Kamala Harris or Hillary Clinton elected, despite how amazingly qualified they were, and running against a candidate who was so completely unqualified, it says something frankly terrible about this country that is unlikely to change anytime soon.

It has to be a safe, non-polarizing choice. (I know such a person doesn't really exist or is bland as toast, but still).

(49 posts)Maybe in four years people will be so tired of the Orange mans bullshit they will vote for anyone, but as of right now the fact of the matter is is that more women are willing to vote for a man than men are willing to vote for a woman. We need a young white man with bulging muscles, cute dimples, and cheek bones that can cut a mofo.
