Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is one state executive who has enthusiastically embraced a federal plan to expand health care coverage for the working poor.

O’Malley said Wednesday that he believes a proposal to pay states to expand their Medicaid programs to cover more people is “too good for us to pass up.”

O’Malley was the keynote speaker at a children’s health summit in Omaha. He is one of 17 Democratic governors who have said they would participate in a federal Medicaid expansion that is part of the new federal health care law, the Affordable Care Act.

Nine other governors, all Republicans, have said they oppose the expansion.
