(Article is from 2023. The the point is still valid. Money spent housing non-violent criminals in Rikers could be better spent in other ways that involve correction).
It now costs 6K to jail someone in Rikers for a year. And it is still a dangerous hellhole. Think what that amount of money could do to alter the life trajectory of a child.

Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology is way cheaper than $500K per year. Pay for their tuition, room, board, books, and give them a brand new low end Audi motor car.

Rehab and rebuilding of character. Housing and jobs. Damn I'm just overwhelmed with the waste....and the loss .
