Susan Rice drops out of running for secretary of state; saddened by partisan politics
Embattled U.N. envoy Susan Rice is dropping out of the running to be the next secretary of state after months of criticism over her Benghazi comments, she told NBC News on Thursday.
If nominated, I am now convinced that the confirmation process would be lengthy, disruptive and costly to you and to our most pressing national and international priorities, Rice wrote in a letter to President Obama, saying shes saddened by the partisan politics surrounding her prospects.
That trade-off is simply not worth it to our country...Therefore, I respectfully request that you no longer consider my candidacy at this time, she wrote in the letter obtained by NBC News.
Brian Williams will have an exclusive interview with Rice on tonights Rock Center With Brian Williams at 10p/9c.
Rice had been viewed as one of the front-runners to replace Hillary Clinton as the nations top foreign policy official.
She has been under intense fire from Republicans for initially characterizing the Sept. 11 assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, as a spur-of-the-moment response to a crude anti-Muslim film.

GOP wins again if Kerry is appointed and they give his Senate seat to Scott Brown.

(34,890 posts)Brown will have to go through another election and win it if he wants it. He only won Ted Kennedy's seat because his opponent there got cocky and didn't campaign as hard as she needed to. I don't the MA Dems will make that mistake again--if it comes to that. Personally, I hope the President totally fucks over the GOP and nominates someone like Wes Clark or Bill Richardson for the job, instead.

I love Sen. Kerry as much as the next guy, but remain concerned that his seat will now be vulnerable, despite the convictions of his fan club who seem overly confident that we'll be able to hold on to it. Unless someone like Barney Frank competes for that seat, I fear it's lost.

(4,925 posts)for his seat, that can stack up against brown.
Brown is given waaaaay to much credit for his win.
Coakley (sp.) was in DC with her hand out, R's saw that she was not politicking in her home state. They dumped a bunch of $$ into Brown right before the election and swiped it from her.
She ran a bad campaign. Warren ran a great campaign.
Brown is irrelevant if they have a qualified candidate to fill Kerry's seat.

(43,271 posts)They targeted Rice from the start and didn't let up. She's right about partisan politics.
These obstructionist assholes will ruin the country just to make a silly point.
