If things get really serious, what percentage can we count on?

As of 2024:

There are over 1,280,000 sworn law enforcement officers in the United States. This includes officers from local police departments, county sheriff's offices, state troopers, and federal law enforcement agencies.

Federal law enforcement - About 137,000 of the sworn law enforcement officers work for federal law enforcement agencies.

The number of enlisted personnel in the US military by branch:

Army: 453,551
Navy: 332,322
Air Force: 318,698
Marine Corps: 172,577
Total armed forces: 1,277,148

Personally, I give a higher percentage to the armed forces provided they still understand what is 'unlawful'.

Local LEOs, the percentage will depend on particular regions. Blue, red, purple, etc.

Lastly, when the full realization of the conflict hits, what do you think the percentage of desertions will be?

Note: This posting pretty much done on the fly. If there's an element you feel I've not noted in the mix, then please feel free to include it.

In an emergency situation people focus on survival and take care of themselves and their family.
They will do what they have to do to survive.

The social contract falls apart quite quickly and people on the margins are out of luck.

What the hell are you talking about?

Civil war?

Execution of political opponents?

What do you mean by “If things get really serious”?

I've read in various DU postings (a recent one asking, 'Is Trump trying to kill us?) and at large in the media, you're saying you don't know what I'm referring to?

Civil war? No, I don't see that happening. But I cannot discount the possibility of turncoats in any of the services.

military and law enforcement will be reliable when it comes down to it - between their loyalty to the office of the President rather than the Constitution, their religious beliefs/teachings, bigotry, misogyny, and authoritarian personalities or just plain fulfillment of their desire to bully/use force, or go along to get along, etc.

Unfortunately, a majority of people that I personally know in local law enforcement and the military are all Trumpers and fundy evangelicals - that includes 2 rangers, a coastie, and some army brass that I’m related to.

Question: Of those you know who are in uniform would you say they are the type to defy orders if the orders are counter to what Trump would want? Do they consider the 'consequences' of such to themselves or is that of little concern in their stance?

They serve property and money more than the people. It's been true ever since police departments were established.
