Dying on the Altar of Compromise

Democrats have spent 50 years trying to find "common ground" with a political party and movement that would gleefully murder our families while they slept.

Democrats believe that the ONLY way American democracy survives, is if we can find some "compromise".

It explains why Dems can win the presidency, and majorities in the House and Senate, and gladly give a "seat at the table" to Retrumplican policy goals; but, when Retrumplicans win with 50.1% of the voters, it's "my way, or the highway snowflakes".

I don't know about you, but my desire to compromise for the "common good" died the first time this FUCKING moron was selected.

We've been at war with people, including some of our own "friends, families and neighbors", that would gleefully murder us if it would make eggs a dime cheaper.

There will be no "coming back from this".

History will show if American democracy is worth fighting for. It will show if decency, respect, empathy, compassion, honor, integrity, law and freedom survives, or dies.

Thankfully, I am old and won't likely be around to see how it all "works out", but let's just say; "I'm not hopeful"

This was set in concrete with Gingrich and his Contract in America and was probably already the right wing world view at least back to Carter but partially obscured by Reagan and Bush being locked in anyway.

what you are referring to (in his acceptance speech?) But you are right. Issues need to be taken care of when they are at hand, NOT handled with a "looking forward and not backward" stance. Do you think they (the Obama Admin.) looked at it as a COG move, since the economy & all-around morale of the entire country was in the crapper? All I know is common sense: if you don't take care of such crimes when you are in the driver's seat, you are complicit. COG is the problem, IMHO.

What I was referring to above was what McConnell et al plotted on the night Obama was elected. And we didn't know about that meeting until sometime later,

It was said early on his Presidency, and it set the tone for letting the Republicans get away with murder (both literally and figuratively) for almost two decades.

Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and company never suffered consequences for their crimes. Trump will never suffer for his.

We must find a way to try to get inside the MAGA mind and alter its path. I don't see MAGA as much different from the McCarthy era, 1950s. MAGA needs to focus on the future, the world they create for us and for themselves as well. To stop with the anger and ego and rage and realize life runs on logic, daily performance, building a future.

I say don't engage with them. Confronted with their warped ideas, just ask then "What's that gonna do for you?" and walk away. I'd call this SHOCK & SHUN. Ignore them. Let them know you don't agree without arguing. They love arguing and dominance. Give them neither. Treat them like mental patients. Because that's what they are. Their minds have been so abused by Q and MAGA illogical rhetoric, gaslighting, stonewalling, and Donnie braying in a raspy throated voice mumbling weird ideas.

Is to let it kill itself. The group of far right wierdos + disengaged social media users (Joe Rogan types) = GOP control. The wierdo group will never go away, so we will have to wait for the disengaged group to figure out that voting for circus clowns, because they might provide us some lolz, isn't in the best interest of the USA.

We know all of the extreme policies being talked about are bad for us. The question is how well the GOP can frame the results. If they create a false-truth that GOP isn't responsible for the bad things happening, we are totally screwed. They are experts at propaganda.

Ask them pointed questions about their future and they don't want to think on that or even hear what any pro-democracy American thinks. It's easier for them to just believe what they've been told to believe.
But at every opportunity we have to at least try, even with the 24/7 media reinforcing their distrust of government in the abstract, which, internalized, media know becomes their almost intractable belief.

Sat Nov 23, 2024, 08:10 AM

The Democratic Party must not normalize or compromise with the fascists in our government.

But for each of us in our personal relationships, I offer this advice:

Don't burn bridges with family, friends, and associates.

They, along with everyone else (except perhaps the oligarchs) will be hurt by what's coming in the next four years. There will be opportunities to swing the pendulum back our way.

There is nothing to be gained by alienating potential allies. I've been very tempted to send an email to family members who voted for Trump, excoriating them for their stupidity. But that would help nothing, and ruin what once was and possibly could be again.

Many if not most Trump voters don't realize they voted against their own best interests, but they're going to find out. The hard way. I understand the desire to rub their faces in it.

Shall we ruin the holidays and formerly good relationships?

That would only bring more pain, and regrets.

These dumb motherfuckers DO NOT LEARN AND THEY ARE THE ENEMY.

The politicians have no power without them and if the politicians attempt to be reasonable in anyway the inmates start flinging poo. They even booed Chump's monkey ass off the stage when he tried to promote the Covid vaccine.

At the very best, if the pain is severe enough they will cautiously take our collective hand off the stove and allow us to treat the worst of the burns before insisting on mashing the mitt into the burner even harder at the first sign of feeling better.

But hey, you have a good imagination so you might as well build some strawmen to knock down or set afire. You're burning bridges anyway, might as well keep putting that torch to good use.

If it feels good do it, but you're fooling yourself if you think you're dispensing real world consequences.

FAFA is coming their way, because the fascist fire brigade will torch a lot more than personal relationships among the people. Inflation will soar, jobs and health insurance will be lost. The coming dumpster fire will make 2017-2021 look like a bic lighter.

But sure, let's keep their hatred focused on us. Let's keep feeding the bitter angels of our nature, beause our anger is righteous. I'm not saying it isn't. I'm saying we will need allies to defeat fascism.

The most successful strategy in war is Divide and Conquer. The American people are bitterly divided because that is exactly want the fascists and oligarchs want and need. They've been driving wedges for decades with their increasing hold over the media landscape.

But you keep going ahead, driving wedges.

Donald Trump and his billionaire backers are happy when volunteers like yourself help them with that task.

Sun Nov 24, 2024, 10:36 AM

THEY are not all knuckle dragging Magats, or Christo-fascist hypocrites, or racist assholes, or Steve Bannon nihilists who want to burn it all down.

Though, of course, many of them are.

And many are not, though you apparently have a compelling need to paint them all with the same brush.

Right now, before the feces really hits the fan and sprays us all in the face, I can state with near certainty that ZERO TRUMP VOTERS ARE OUR ALLIES in the war against American fascism.

Not the few in my family who swallowed some of the orange kool-aid.

Not my associates at work whom I've known for years and deemed reasonably intelligent decent human beings.

Not my wife's colleagues at the high school who were raised Republican and have always voted that way.

How many of those folks actually desire to inflict harm on me, my wife, and children; understand what American fascism looks like; and can smell the feces heading our way?

Though I can't see directly into their hearts (neither can you) I would bet the number is very small among the people my wife and I have known.

When the economic hardship of Trump’s agenda hits them in the face and the stench is deep in their nostrils, a lot of them will see the cause and effect. Those who do will be more ready for change than they were when the price of eggs made their breakfast more expensive.

Just as feces occurs, shit changes. So do the whims of American voters, especially those who are not students of history and don't have a firm grasp on how government works. They will place blame, then reach for the next shiny object. Most of them are not nearly as preoccupied with politics as we here at DU. That includes a not insignificant chunk of the Democratic base that stayed home Nov 5.

Potential allies.

The only thing burning bridges will accomplish is to fill their hearts with as much hatred towards us as you're directing at them now.

Divide and Conquer is the most effective strategy the real enemies of American democracy employ.

That much I can state with certainty.

Not the hard core ones, but millions aren’t hard core. Some are only in the R camp because they know their friends and family are and they don’t pay attention to politics.

I’ve wondered if a letter of prophecy rather than blame, focused on what we expect to see would set things up so that when they start coming to pass they’ll be primed to see it through our frame, not the administration’s. Maybe some eyes will begin to open then.

My family essentially consists of my sister, my four 1st cousins, and their children. We were like siblings growing up, with many good shared memories.

At 67, I'm the youngest. My sister is in ill health. An older female cousin is dying of cancer. The conservative/libertarian cousin is nearest to my age. He and I were closest when we were all together. Now he has advanced Parkinsons, barely able to walk or talk without severe stutter. His sons voted for Trump. Josh is very nice guy, we've gone on some hiking trips together. Tim is the youngest, quiet type. Tony is the oldest, politically strident. Moved to Texas, associate professor of political science. He is beyond persuading.

Bottom line, I don't want to make things worse for family members nearing the end of their life journey.

Especially when there is nothing to be gained by unleashing my anger and contempt at the few who voted for the vile orange fascist.

After seeing how McConnell and co. set out to obstruct President Obama by any means on the day he was inaugurated, it was clear compromise and bipartisanship were a thing of the past.

23. The root problem there is, we lack a common vision.
Sat Nov 23, 2024, 09:23 AM
Nov 23

That's what unites a people. Allows them to work together and honestly compromise when needed. In the past, that vision was American democracy. I may not have liked Ford, Reagan, Bush I and 2, Dole, McCain, Romney and so on, but I never for an instant doubted their devotion to the American system of democracy. That was sacrosanct. Now, 33% of America aren't interested in democracy at all. They want to play silly word games about democracy v republic in order to assuage their conscience for outright rejecting America's guiding principle. They and we know what they're up to. They're not fooling anyone. Americans thinking that way. Still hard to wrap my brain around it..

There's a point somewhere in this progression where the sides simply can no longer live together. Government becomes disfunctional. Mixing between the sides drastically declines. We balkanize. Within families. People move to one region or another, driven by that balkanization. Then a people formerly splits. There's simply no other way. You can say "it's impossible", "can't be done", but it has been done. Many times. Sometimes violently but many times not. There simply comes a point when the disfunction gets so bad both sides realize it's the best alternative, regardless of the difficulties in doing so.

Are we at that point? I don't know. But it sure feels like we're getting awfully close.

44. It's not vision it's money
Sat Nov 23, 2024, 10:41 AM
Nov 23

It's not a lack of shared vision. It's a lack of shared resources and wealth.

All the filthy-rich are on the side of fascism. Fascism or democracy really makes no difference to a group of people who have more wealth than an entire nation. It was the same under feudalism.

All the wealth of a nation under the control of just a few families that pass on their wealth, rig it to accumulate more for generations, leaving everyone else to starve.

And still they had war after war after war. Conning the masses to die and fight in those constant wars. They were always poisoning each other and killing off relatives. They passed ridiculous laws that resulted in more deaths or just more stupidity.

Yeah a few of the filthy-rich like to give out money to the starving. A few like the ideals of democracy but they are NOT risking their vast wealth on ideals. And the filthy-rich know that equality, truth and harmony leads to less power for them.

They are the ones in power. They are the ones supporting Trump and his MAGAts. They are the ones paying for the constant propaganda and manipulation.

They are the ones Democratic leaders have to appeal to in order to get money to run against the fascists. So Democrats never quite make it all the way to the liberal side because they want some of that money and power too. They need it to win.

And it really helps to have the support of the filthy-rich to get elected. That's why that stupid idea that corporations are people too, lead to more inequality.

And little by little, they have taken off all barriers to their ultimate control of the mass of people calling themselves Americans.

It is just going to get worse and worse. More homeless, more hungry and starving people. Fewer and fewer rights. Stupider and stupider laws designed to keep the masses fighting each other.

Then one of those filthy-rich are going to declare themselves king. It's not Trump. He's too stupid and demented to survive much longer. I think Musk is trying to be king, maybe a Koch, maybe Bezos.

The US is no longer a democracy and we need to face that. When Congress runs in the midterm elections, there won't be any change because Dems will not be funded by the filthy-rich. The filthy-rich don't need Dems anymore.

It use to be that the filthy-rich paid Republicans to win elections and paid Democrats to lose elections because they weren't ready to show their hand. They wanted the US to still look like a democracy. But with Trump they have taken off their mask. Now they are going to be truly horrible.

The only way out would be if the military, the MAGAts and the religious got angry and fought back with us. And it would be a big fight because the filthy-rich have all the resources. But we, with the MAGAts, military and religious, would have the numbers.

Nov 23

Was one of those times.

We came back from it. We were not perfect as a nation immediately after that War ended, and we still are not, centuries later, but we have improved our democracy. It has become more inclusive and more tolerant of differences.

I think there are more people in our nation who value our democracy than we know of and many of them are Republicans.

We are up against a global movement to destroy the very concept of democracy wherever it exists and allow oligarchs to reign over the world. A large number of Americans have drunk the KoolAid and are now useless. But, there are still some who can be reached. We need our own talk radio as was used during WWII, and other media to influence how we think, and movies that reveal what is really going on (Hey there, Hollywood). We are not powerless. If we love our country enough, we must develop what is really a wartime strategy to save it. And, we have more tools at hand on an individual level, through the Internet. (Please be aware of Pegasus spyware. Ronan Farrow has a documentary on this (Surveilled), now airing on HBO On Demand.) Our task is challenging because we are a nation whose citizens come from every nation in the world.

I think we should build a bridge where, strategically it makes sense to build it, and burn a bridge where it is necessary, perhaps to shock that person awake. Being vindictive is not helpful and is beside the point. We must be thoughtful, clear eyed and act as if each one of us is a general in a war. We also need a collective strategy to move forward. We are NOT focusing on the true enemy. It is much larger than the MAGA movement.

Think about it.

Who is it that's "pushes" that compromise narrative after every Democratic victory?

It's the corporate media. They are the ones, within 24 hours, of a Dem victory, pushing story, after story, after story, after opinion piece, about the need/desire for compromise.

Have you seen ONE frickin story since November 5TH about the need/desire for compromise?

All I've seen is stories about the crazy, corrupt, fascist fucksticks Donnie Dipshit is demanding for his cabinet.

Drama and chaos always outsells competence and compromise, and the media can't be bothered with news, THEY HAVE A SHOW TO SELL.

Surprising, isn't it?

I dont know the demographic breakdown but as an example we have perhaps 30 percent of our party is caucasian, 30 percent African American, 20 percent Hispanic, 10 percent asian, 10 percent other muslim, indian, etc. what is important for one group is not important for another. Abortion rights may have been less important for muslims and Hispanics, Israel Gaza was super important for muslims but not as much for others.

Its hard to get them all together. Republicans or those who watch fox news are all together in their views. Hatred for democrats who they think allowed LGBTQ to come out of closet and are ok with abortion which they think caused all the countries problems.

...is with the Oligarchs.

The Cons shamelessly represent them with a new veneer of "populism". They are the de-facto Oligarch party.

The Democrats need them to supply money for campaigns. After decades of wealth concentration since the 60's they rely on them to supply the goods and services that constitute the modern economy. They are in essence "too big to fail." This became a core tenant of Obama's shameful acquiescence to the banking and financial community after the mini collapse of 2008. The joke is that Biden actually started to try to reverse this legacy and you just saw the result...a rapist elected to the presidency.

While there are still many small businesses in this country, they can't exist without the supply chains that the Oligarchs now control.

They control most of the information landscape.

They control the digital landscape.

They control agriculture.

They control energy.

We are all in a delusional state if we think this is suddenly going to revert to 1900's America. It's not.

The only way this changes is that it wealth concentration either becomes suddenly unprofitable or illegal.

I for one am not holding my breath...

Democrats fold like a cheap suit when facing republicans. That's why we have the Supreme Court (SC) we do now. When democrats are in power republicans say "It's too close to elections to appoint a SC judge! Let the people decide!" and democrats cower. When republicans are in power "We better appoint an SC judge soon before elections!" and democrats cower.

Is this because republican policies help democratic $politicians$ too? I wonder.

No amount of reasoning or compromise will change them (Trumpers) ..but if Trump follows through on his plans, which he must to please his followers, and imposes a tariff on imports..and deports millions of workers....the result will be disaster for the economy..., then and only that will cause the scales to fall from their adoring eyes

and there was that attack on the capital, where a violent mob would have hung the broken bodies of Nancy Pelosi and AOC from a DC bridge like a scene out of Felugia. Thankfully, Pete Hegseth wasn't the Secretary of Defense at the time, or things could have been a lot worse.

Of course, there were the armed Nazis marching through the streets of Columbus, OH. I am sure they were only looking to peacefully engage with folks of differing opinions. Oh, and don't forget Kyle Rittenhouse...

Oh, I forgot...Donnie Dipshit hasn't spent the past 10 years fomenting violence against his political opponents, and Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, Alex Jones and Glen Beck haven't spent 40 years dehumanizing Democrats.

Remember when Donnie Dipshit and his minions cracked us all up with their jokes about the 80 year old husband of the Democratic Speaker of the House getting his head caved in with a hammer? What a "hoot" that was.
