Analogously: I taught doctoral and post-doctoral candidates for years, and included in that group were some of the most disturbed, manipulative, narcissistic, and in a few cases criminal individuals you could ever meet, and if people were aware that these doctors, dentists, and podiatrists were practicing, they’d be afraid to attend a professional office randomly , such as an urgent care facility.
I mention those three professions because in most states, they are the only licensed professionals who are permitted to cut living tissue. This is a point which is often mentioned in the latter stages of the curriculum.
So if I wanted to create say, a dental consortium of malevolence, evil, thievery, and incompetence, I would know exactly whom to call. And let me tell you, it would be positively frightening. Please allow me to give you a few examples:
A drug kingpin who did over 30 years in jail and was somehow released a few years ago. He inveigled several of his classmates who also wound up doing federal time and could not practice because of the conviction.
An individual who used to have the patient open his or her mouth, would smile to herself, and then deliberately hurt the patient with a dull instrument -which hurts more than a sharp one.
A scheming crook and liar who forged instructors’ signatures in clinical procedures and managed to worm his way to a diploma and license to practice. He wound up in wholesale furniture sales.
An academically incompetent compulsive liar who used Comet cleanser inside a tooth for an endodontic procedure. When asked by his horrified instructor why he would do this he said that he couldn’t find the sodium hypochlorite (known as Clorox) so Comet cleanser contained Chlorinol which sounded close. (I thought the instructor was going to have a stroke, he was so apoplectic). This moron would lie about what he ate for breakfast and any other thing. He did not finish his studies in my institution.
Any number of individuals who had absolutely zero technical ability, or were cheating in every aspect of the curriculum , or were so socially maladjusted, telling a patient for example that that he was in a bad mood because his wife had a vaginal infection so they couldn’t have sex last night or another fellow who wore his infant in a papoose on his back and multiple times allowed the baby to be struck by swinging steel fire doors which closed rapidly. (Can’t make this stuff up)
And finally, a woman who claimed that she was robbed of her tuition money on the way to pay her bill but in fact had concocted this story for the police and two tv stations so that she would not have to give it to a drug dealer for whom she was selling who then came after her with a .45, put it to her head, and made her retrieve the money. She was soon after discharged from her Navy enlistment with a Dishonorable Discharge. Stellar behavior.
I could contact a big bunch of them and start a group practice or staff a dental school with them. Can you imagine? Well, you won’t have to: the equivalent is assembling to take power shortly in the District of Columbia as we speak.
