trump is claiming to have won a historic landslide victory that gives him a mandate. In the real world, trump did not win a landslide victory and has no mandate

Trump transition team spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt on Friday took aim at Politico and The New York Times for reporting on the fact that President-elect Trump didnt win the popular vote by some resounding majority.
New Fake News Narrative Alert! Leavitt posted on X. Here are the ridiculous headlines from @politico and @nytimes this morning. The fake news is trying to minimize President Trumps massive and historic victory to try to delegitimize his mandate before he even takes the Oath of Office again.

Its no surprise that Trump and his team are fuming: Since November 5, Trumps margin of victory has narrowed considerably. As of the vote count Friday morning, Trump only won against Vice President Kamala Harris by 1.6 points, and failed to secure more than 50 percent of the popular vote. Hillary Clinton managed to beat Trump by a larger margin in 2016 than Trump did over Harris in 2024.
Trump and his supporters have been pushing the landslide narrative ever since he defeated Harris. We had a great election in the U.S. Amazing what happened, we had tremendous success. The most successful in over 100 years they say, he told Fox News last week. Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung claimed that President Trump won in dominating and historic fashion after the Democrats and the fake news media peddled outright lies and disinformation throughout the campaign. And Republicans throughout Congress have claimed the same.
trump cannot deal with reality or facts

(2,445 posts)It seemed that the MSM wasn't ever going to mention the fact that Trump didn't even reach the 50% threshold of the popular vote. A plurality landslide, I guess.

(2,178 posts)than Trump's margin this election. The closest thing for calling it "historic" is it was very nearly the narrowest margin of victory in history.
If Trump's margin was "massive", then in 2020 Biden's victory was "super ultra massive" (4.5% margin for Biden to 1.5% for Trump)

Trump did not even get 50% of the vote and he won the popular vote by the smallest margin since 2000 and his margin of victory was one of the smallest in the last 100 years.
And this means there certainly is no mandate for action:
"Two massive polls of the 2024 electoratethe network exit poll and the VoteCast survey used by Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, and other outletsshow that Trump won the election because voters rejected the status quo and had positive memories of his first term. But on most issues, they oppose what Republicans want to do in his second term."

(3,504 posts)Sure he'll do a bunch of largely symbolic Exec Orders Day One but his ability to really get substantive stuff done will take legislating and when was the last time the House could even pass a budget? Guessing that was under Pelosi. While Trump is assembling his clown car cabinet, the clown car already in place in the GOP House will be a huge stumbling block for his agenda. And well deserved for him and the GOP.

Metaphorical
(2,338 posts)My guess at this stage is that at this stage the House is going to be infighting for the next year and will go through a series of leaders just like last time, even as their margin shrinks. The difference - at this point Jeffries really has no reason to help support Johnson or the current leader, as it is likely that most of Trump's policies are likely to be bad ones.

Not content that he won...possibly through nefarious methods. He is a miserable hateful old man.
It's definitely not a landslide.
Honestly, election of late are not landslides, the ones in the past used to be landslides, prior to the 2000s. Reagan's 1984 win was a landslide. The country is more divided and nutty as ever.

(1,946 posts)When the lard never really topped at over 47% approval ratings.
That is why I had such high hopes because he topped out at 47% approval, so how did he end up with 49.9% votes?
So over this bullshit. I don't trust him or the people around him. I wish a recount was done.
