Let me see if I can remember this correctly. The Justice Department had entered into an agreement with Hunter and his defense attorneys to plead guilty to some of the crimes alleged and Hunter would receive no jail time and the plea deal ended any other investigations against him.
The plea deal was within the boundaries of any other defendant in a similar situation. The crimes were non-violent, and Hunter paid restitution in full to the US Treasury for back taxes, including fines and penalties. He also took responsibility for the gun application mistake, but no jail time. The Republicans freaked out. They used this plea deal to claim the "fix" was in and the intimidation seemed to have forced the judge to reject the plea bargain.
That's not the justice Department's fault and here is where President Biden is correct. Had Hunter Biden been Hunter Smith the plea bargain, which was well within normal guidelines for the DOJ (IMO), would have stood and Hunter's case would have been just another day at the office.
That's where politics played a role, much like the Comey letter against Hillary in October 2016. Too many otherwise good men and women second guess themselves when their first instincts are correct. Our side suffers from this, their side doesn't. Buckle up, it's about to get much worse.

(17,624 posts)disagreed about what supposedly had been agreed to once they got in front of the judge. The DOJ said the deal meant no further prosecutions on some certain actions, and Hunter's lawyers said the deal meant no further prosecutions of a larger time period/more actions.
While the Repugs did freak out about a deal existing, the judge did not reject it on those grounds or due to intimidation but because the prosecution and defense were not on the same page about how broad the future non-prosecution aspect of the deal was.
So the DOJ was intimately involved in the plea deal failure.

(17,624 posts)So that's as "DOJ" as one can get. That was the DOJ, then.

(17,624 posts)political pressure and that is simply untrue based upon the publicly available court records AFAIK. No judge can accept a plea deal when the prosecution and defense do not agree about the terms of said deal.

(6,686 posts)Compared to the more than two years of thumb twiddling, foot dragging, delays and lack of action when it came to prosecuting Trump for insurrection. And that is why I don't give a damn about defending the DOJ. It was an abject failure at protecting the citizens of this country from an internal enemy. This stuff with Hunter Biden should NEVER have been on its docket.
STOP DEFENDING MERRICK GARLAND. He is the reason Trump is headed to the White House again.
