Important Dates and Deadlines
2024 Presidential Election
November 5, 2024 - Election Day
Voters in every state and the District of Columbia choose electors
that the executive of the state (often the Governor) will appoint to
the Electoral College.
December 11, 2024 - Certificates of Ascertainment Due
The certificates of ascertainment name the electors chosen by the winning candidate
for president and vice president and provide the results of votes cast for each slate
of electors.
December 17, 2024 - Electoral College Meets
Electors meet in all 50 states and the District of Columbia and cast their
ballots - one vote each for president and vice president and then transmit
these votes to National Archivist and the President of the Senate in DC.
January 6, 2025 - Joint Session of Congress
The electoral votes are read and counted before a joint
session of Congress.
January 20, 2025 - Inauguration Day
The new president and vice president are sworn in and take office.
