"America does not let its needy citizens fend for themselves."

Christopher Reeve said that at the DNC in 1996. Currently watching Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story on Max. It’s a really good poignant movie and that quote stood out, especially right now.

I loved his movie Somewhere In Time, but he will always be Superman to me.

Sadly he was wrong, America DOES let the needy fend for themselves. Reeves did as much as he could, and others do too, but there is too much to be done for the needy to suggest things are OK.

...one must keep in mind that this was a convention to renominate a Democratic POTUS who had just signed a Republican welfare-"reform" bill that, essentially, did tell its needy citizens to "fend for themselves."

had the feeling it was an anachronism. Since he spoke at the convention, America has become more hard hearted. His comments would have been met by ridicule and cruelty from the right if said today.
