(Reuters) - The Trump transition team wants the incoming administration to drop a car-crash reporting requirement opposed by Elon Musks Tesla (TSLA) , according to a document seen by Reuters, a move that could cripple the governments ability to investigate and regulate the safety of vehicles with automated-driving systems.

The recommendation to kill the crash-reporting rule came from a transition team tasked with producing a 100-day strategy for automotive policy. The group called the measure a mandate for "excessive" data collection, the document seen by Reuters shows.

NHTSA said in a statement that such data is crucial to evaluating the safety of emerging automated-driving technologies. Two former NHTSA employees said the crash-reporting requirements were pivotal to agency investigations into Teslas driver-assistance features that led to 2023 recalls. Without the data, they said, NHTSA cannot easily detect crash patterns that highlight safety problems.

(18,605 posts)And how we hoped our legal system would actually uphold the law? It all seems so quaint now.
The gates of corruption hell have now been thrown wide open. Every scheming rapacious scumbag with a suitcase full of cash will be welcomed by Congress and the White House, while Pam Bondi looks the other way.

(15,393 posts)Tech or Medical based Billionaires who aren't still practicing engineers or scientists think their 20 or 30 year old Bachelor's or Master's degree that launched them into their first couple millions means they're still experts in their field.
They like to think they came up with whatever product based on their own hard work, when most of the time, it was leveraged off Government or grant funded research work of other people, and they were lucky enough to either get a foot in the door or be first out the gate with "something new", hustling their way to market before the actual brains behind their product could publish or produce themselves.
They got their billions through great Marketing, luck, and timing.
Granted, being able to take advantage is a skill, but it wasn't their design, scientific or technical genius that got them where they were.
An idiot with a bit of a head start can take advantage of all three; does that make that idiot anything more than an advertising agent selling a product they know a bit about -
- or worse - a thieving grifter claiming other people's products and hard work as their own and cheating both the developers and customers?
Or does slapping their name on cool shiny ideas or vaporware based on other's real ongoing work and trying to pretend their imitative toy have an actual, tangible value?
As for governance, the Wealthy, in general, increasingly seem to have little idea what a Democratic Government that provides Common non-profit public services actually does, especially those promoting there should be fewer regulations and more productivity or efficiency in place to "run government like a business".
They don't care or understand that Governments for Profit end up in a Zero Sum situation, and become increasingly unstable with fewer opportunities and innovation as time goes on.
They end up with the lazy lords on one end and the starving, disposable serfs on the other. Plantation economics only innovates to squeeze out more profit using less labor.
I can somewhat understand the Evangelical End-timer Billionaires. Jaysus is coming; they live for the egotistical assurance that soonthey will be carried up live into heaven where they can sadistically laugh with their pious ancestors at all the sinners and non-believers burning in eternal hellfire while they get everything they want.
But objectively speaking, the Non End-Timer Billionaires (Tech Bros, Resource Extraction, Manufacturing, Pharma and Insurance, Investment) are eating their seed corn by playing their Randriod (Ayn Rand, for those who don't know) Fantasies in a bubble of their own reality.
They got their billions - and have been able protect that wealth and their comfort - because of that boring, intrusive, slightly inefficient Government Bureaucracy, not in spite of it.
The US Government provides them with an educated workforce, a stable environment to operate in, relatively inexpensive resources and prior research.
Over the years it has also saved them from angry mobs or loan wolves with nothing left to lose when they screwed up on the way to their Multi-Millions and Billions.
But no, you "Makers", you "Lords of the Earth" who talk about tearing it all down; turn the world around you into Thunderdome and stick it to the lowly eaters and peasants for entertainment purposes while everything falls apart.
Afterwards, you're suddenly confused as why there's no longer comfortably secure, beautiful bubble worlds or enclaves for you to buy your way back to?
You thought wealth would be worth anything when there's no one left who could buy or make anything you "need" because you burned it all down?
I guess to all those wealthy but emotionally six-years old "adults" grasping for Ultimate Power and short term Ego-boos just show they are stronger and better than everyone else is far more critical to the long term health of the Real World around them.
Not like what the rest of us do to live - we have to go through life putting up with inconveniences and setbacks we can't "buy our way out of" or have Mommy and Daddy solve for us; we survive by cooperation, enduring and learning through constant change, failures, and insecurity. We try to use common sense when (and if) opportunities arise. We try to save when we can to be able to have when we will need it.
