Translated summary of Trumps Syria speech:
- He wanted out of Syria and got heat for it but now there isnt a real need to pull out US troops because their main hostile force has been decimated (aka the Syrian regime and Iranian militias).
- He thinks Turkey is behind the rebels and credits it for the regime collapsing.
Seems to think its a smart move by Ankara and its strong military.
- He and Erdogan get along pretty well.
- Obamas lack of resolve is what enabled Assad.

(61,074 posts)Assad used chemical weapons in 2014 "crossing Obama's red line". Obama initially was supportive of a tactical response. He then walked that back, but did not rule anything out in the future. Around that time, Kerry was asked how Assad could avoid a US response and he answered he could give up his chemical weapons. Russian FM Lavrov quickly agreed it could work. Obama sent Kerry to negotiate the details and a huge stockpile of chemical weapons was collected and destroyed.
Assad again used chemical weapons when Trump was President. Trump ordered an attack and cratered the runway used by the planes that used chemical weapons. They were operational in weeks.
Which approach made further attacks less likely?
Where the he didn't respond to the red line started with some essentially neo con writers, Senators McCain and Graham, and pundits who wanted the US to enter the complex mess of a Civil War and mocked the idea of a narrow tactical response.
