(10,860 posts)There is a lot of mental illness in this country. That is obvious from our latest election. So sad.

(2 posts)I am a gun owner. I have had a hunting rifle and shotgun for years. Until about 5 years ago, I had not owned a handgun. I have come to believe that there may come a time when we have to defend ourselves, our family and this country. We hear all the braggadocio of the RWNJs proclaiming how they own most of the guns. I have enough that if I or my family are attacked, they will realize their mistake. As a retired Army senior NCO, I am trained in the safe use of firearms and I have a concealed carry permit. I know many of my fellow democrats may not approve of gun ownership, but I have my beliefs. I am in favor of red flag laws and universal background checks.

(4,168 posts)about us: That we are socialists, commies, anti-American, fine with killing babies, want to take away people's freedom of speech, and on and on and on. We need a major media campaign, and we need to be willing to speak up instead of letting the lies be taken for granted. More importantly, we need a media system that shows the truth and the lies, and exposes the propaganda about Dems.

(603 posts)I grew up in a rural part of Northern Wisconsin where things were generally very peaceful but, at any given time, law enforcement could be 30 minutes away. Everybody had a shotgun or a 30-30 at hand. Nobody took them out or showed them around but everybody knew that everyone had a one. It wasn't any kind of topic of discussion. Just like you didn't ordinarily talk about your tractor or chainsaw. You just had one and everyone knew it. I have several guns and two of them are pistols - in good working order. My feeling about guns is same as my feelings about fire extinguishers . I don't live in constant fear that there will be a fire but, I realize that a fire is a possible "thing" and I will take every step to ensure that the conditions for a fire are minimalized. However, there is always a chance that a fire could break out, regardless. Because of that, I think I should have a fire extinguisher, make sure it is a good and reliable one, train myself in its proper use, and hope the hell I never have to use it. And that's how I feel about guns...

Police entering your house unannounced will come in with weapons drawn, and will be prepared to shoot as soon as they see a gun in your hand.
'He had a gun' is enough reason.
Not accusing anyone on DU of being involved in anything illegal that warrants a no-knock door busting gun drawn police raid at 4 am, but police sometimes get muddled up on the address. Some of them have 4 digits, can be confusing.

(67,111 posts)Whatever the larger context at the time, a certain contingent of stalwart gun worshipers would show up to attack anyone who suggested that maybe every citizen doesn't need access to battlefield-ready military hardware.
Whenever a classroom is gunned down or some asshole shoots up his girlfriend's yoga class, you can bet that some people will immediately step in to protect the guns.

(22,582 posts)That said, I respect and appreciate responsible gun owners like Mr. King and others who have responded in this thread, especially those who have been trained in the proper use and care of firearms, in the military or elsewhere. I'm glad to know that you guys are out there, even though I don't plan on joining you.
