(18,690 posts)Instead of "recovering" and feeling "stronger and more resilient" and "ready to fight, fight, fight" (or sacrifice my life for the Constitution, as Dean Obeidallah seemed to suggest we should be prepared to do on his radio program last night) as time has gone by, I actually feel worse than I did on November 6.
I feel worse. Its like dread.

(5,361 posts)If you must, I advise just watching Lawrence O'Donnell. He won't scare you half to death.
Being this afraid right now is only hurting you. You are aware. Let it be at that. Leave the fear for when it is warranted, if that comes. But right now, fear is sapping your strength. Don't let them do that to you. Fear will only leave you unable to think clearly when that is exactly what you will need to be able to do no matter what they do or don't do.
If I let myelf go there, I would be terrified, too. Every single one of the cuts they have mentioned would affect me. But I'm not going to let fear control me. That is what they hope for. We need to remain clear-headed.
So, please, stop listening to the news. Just read DU, and if you haven't, join Bluesky and read there. Find your way to hope, not fear. Please.

When their savior becomes their slayer, I wonder how theyre going feel about it then. That is what the leaders are preparing for in the middle east..
It is very sick and twisted that these people worship death instead of worshiping life. They would hang their savior on a cross for preaching life instead of death.

(411 posts)It's the younger people who will be screwed. Especially if Dr. Oz forces them to have a paycheck deduction of 10 to 20% paying a private Medicare 'Advantage' company instead of going into the Meficare Trust Fund. What if the company getting the deduction goes out of business before you retire? Where does your money go?
Think about that. The SS deduction is 6.2%. Some states have taxes of 6%. Add that to a 10% deduction for Medicare Advantage and Federal taxes. If you make between 47k and 100k you federal tax will be 22%. 22+10+6+6.2=44.2% Subtract 44.2% from 100% and you will take home only about 55.8% of your salary. I think my math is right, but it's pretty close.

(1,882 posts)So, I'd guess that your 401K is safe and you wouldn't want to pay a penalty for taking it out early. I'm 60 myself and think it's likely that he's going to destroy my ACA Marketplace plan that I need for the next 5 years. And, probably Medicare and Social Security will be damaged.
On a meta level, I'm more apprehensive about our intelligence services being completely compromised to Putin, the dismantling of NATO, the dismantling of the EPA, media's compliance to pressure and minimizing critical coverage, 4 years of judicial appointments that will change the landscape, disinformation from government agences which orchestrated with right wing social media will make a large segment of the country even more impervious to reality, the gaming of democratic processes to make it more difficult for the right's candidates to lose in the future.
Compared to Dump's first term, from day one there will be a vastly more organized and preplanned assault on dismantling the government and privatizing its functions. Peter Thiel and their cohort of billionaires put a lot of thought into the Project 2025 blueprint and Trump's impulsiveness will likely play less of a role this time around. There won't be any "normies" in his administration to check him now.
Hopefully, there will be a few Republican Senators willing to push back on things like privatizing the post office and ending ACA, but although I will do what I can to help push back, it's hard not to think that the outlook is bleak right now.

(11,203 posts)I had hoped to buy coverage from the ACA when Cobra expires (30 months from when my husband was Medicare eligible) to get me to when I am Medicare eligible. I have chronic immune issues (pre-existing conditions with increased risks for future health problems) for which I have been taking only one Rx (approx 1K/month without insurance) for past 15 years.
As I said, I am lucky (through over 30 years of frugality, saving, and investing) to have enough savings to pay for ACA coverage with no subsidies (could even be a bit less than what I currently pay for pretty good Cobra policy -I wanted continuous care with known insurance as long as possible) until I get on Medicare (which my husband in on and we already pay for). I had even worked enough part time hours to buy into my employers lesser coverage insurance plan, but chose to continue with the Cobra policy.
I will not be working after age 60 (a few months away). I want to be able to enjoy retirement with my husband while we are both moderately active.

(36,665 posts)My husband and I both worked hard (we grew up in modest families) - and we have been successful by the "American Dream" standard. We had a little help with college (he had a modest account from family, I had GI bill). We then started working and have raised our children, one a college graduate and the other getting his acceptances now for next year. We own our home in the suburbs and take vacations. That was normal in the 1950s, but not so normal now, as we all know. All sound great, right? Here's where the "but" comes in. I have rheumatoid arthritis. We pay thousands in healthcare premiums each year for mediocre coverage (before we even get to the deductibles and co-pays). It is decent but not great coverage (yes, it's UHC). I am really worried what this bunch of scoundrels coming into Washington will do to further destroy any of the coverage we have, much less the social security that we've been paying in for years (we are in our 50s so that is not directly relevant yet, but I know they're going to try to privatize it so they can steal it). I am not at all happy about the outcome of this election.

(34 posts)Children fear the dark because of what it seems to be.
It seems to be mysterious and full of the unknown. Full of all the monsters in one's imagination.
Horrid, cruel, hideous, and hidden.
The absence of light,
the dulling of sight, the shade falling,
fear. Fear.
It is fear which colors the perception, distracts attention,
dims senses and removes thought, reason and clarity because of the ominous demons
who live in the imagination.
For this, we cannot
we cannot...
we must remember ourselves,
our resolve
our friends
our neighbors
whose demons are different,
who blind them - but we can see
as fear only
not the horror that appears to them.
This is our time,
this is our fight,
this is our time
this is our moment to deny the demons power,
and destroy fear in the face of our hopes
and overcome darkness, by being a light for another
and not depart - or disdain, but overcome.
The darkness holds no power,
and we're no longer children looking to see the world
through simple eyes,
but in full-view.
Without any misunderstanding
there is nothing which we must fear,
because we are not alone.

"Savings" (cuts) here and there... age restrictions... The goal is to phase out the "entitlements" and replace them with "private" programs. Of course, this is what we had before the FDR New Deal started... Wealthy people could save, and poor people could or did not. The goal is to get control of the MONEY. they want the money "out of government" and into their pockets. There are a lot of semi alarmist type posts and it will only make you more anxious. Also just the continual bombardment of news etc;. Get out and get some fresh air etc. 🤗

It's definitely going to be bad; I'm going to focus on maintaining my own sanity.

(6,044 posts)I now need triple or quadruple bypass, and I'm praying I get, approved. Otherwise I'm a dead man walking to put it bluntly.
My true hope is that AARP and others flood R's with the real consequences of these proposals, both real life and electoral.
My other hope is that the House Majority is so small that there's no way it can pass.
Praying real hard.

(1,205 posts)I am eighty. I am too old to start a new life as a refugee. I am on social security and my health care is through the VA. If the SS stops .... well, the mortgage will not pay itself. How long will I live on the street with disease rampant and everybody has a gun? (Hell, I have one too that is probably powerful enough to shatter my arthritic hand.)
I live in California so there is perhaps some insulation from tsf's insanity but that just means that California will be a prime target for putin and trump.... and I will have to pay attention to that.
These are supposed to be my fucking Golden Years.
I want to pay attention the the beauty of life..... not hold a death watch for all things bright and beautiful.

(998 posts)I'm absolutely dreading January 20th.
As bad as Trump and his band of oligarchs and christofascists are now, at least he's not actually president for 4 more weeks.

(24,486 posts)choice now? So much of life is about choices and consequences. Myself, I'm ashamed of calling them Democrats if they are that stupid.

(19,156 posts)I keep trying to think of what I can do to protect myself.
I can't believe so many people were oblivious to how bad this might get.
I hope I wake up 4 years from now and am thinking that I was the idiot. Because if I am the smart one, as far as what all this might mean - I might not be alive in 4 years to wake up.

Rightly or wrongly, that is how I feel. I can see disaster coming, but I feel powerless to do anything about it. I feel very calm, like "So here we are, this is happening, this thing I've been so afraid of for so long. The Orange Hellbeast is going to be potus again, and there's not a blasted thing I can do about it, so I guess I'll just keep on living my life for as long as I can. Because what else is there to do?"
The way I see it, there are people in this world who might have the power to do something to change things, but I'm not one of them. I'm just a passenger on this boat; nobody is going to give me the wheel. It's like the Serenity Prayer says: change the things you can and accept the things you can't change. I'm all out of things that I can change.
I'm not saying it's right or wrong to feel this way, just describing how I feel right now, at this particular moment in time. More than anything, I think I'm just ... tired. SO tired, after all those months ot worry and dread about TSF winning. It's like I just can't find any more fucks to give, like I've been wrung completely dry. Maybe I'll find some more eventually. I hope so.
