As the New York Times reports based on insider interviews and leaked documents from both Tesla and the police, Musk's private security force has ballooned in recent years as the billionaire responds to his growing fame — and infamy.

It's a crazy idea. But thinking from Musk's POV, what could be safer than locking up the people you have the most intimate relationships with (wives and children), controlling them completely with money and geography, to keep them from speaking to reporters or serious biographers?

I think it infuriates him that his daughter Vivian Jenna has estranged him and, if the reports are correct, is preparing to leave, or has left, the United States. She refuses to be controlled and is unafraid to talk about what a horrible father he is. I have a gut feeling that a lot of his weird anger directed at U.S. citizens and, now European democracies, is displaced from that relationship, combined with drug abuse, isolation, boredom and mental health issues.

He strikes me as one of those terribly unhappy people who derives macabre pleasure from inflicting pain on others.
