Valentina Gomez, a Texas Republican, drew sharp criticism after suggesting undocumented immigrants who commit violent crimes should be publicly executed.
In a video shared on X, formerly Twitter, Gomez simulated shooting a migrant, claiming the measure would serve as a deterrent. Her remarks, following a high-profile subway murder in New York City where the suspect is an undocumented immigrant, ignited a firestorm of backlash online.

[A] dummy representing an undocumented migrant in the video was seen tied to a chair with their hands duct taped behind their back. Their face was covered with a hood.

She fires the gun without looking, a plume of smoke rising as she says, Its that simple: public executions for any illegal that rapes or kills an American.
Is this what we have become? Seriously? We're reduced to the absurdity of obscure congressional candidates she is challenging U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw in the 2026 GOP primary playing make-believe about executions to garner millions of views on social media.
Any act of violence should be condemned, and when they happen, due process is afforded through the criminal justice. Immigrants do commit crimes, sometimes violent ones. But its also worth repeating that as myriad studies have shown, immigrants do not commit crimes at a higher rate than native-born Americans. Along these lines, the American Immigration Council has reported that as the immigration population grew in the United States between 1980 and 2022, the crime rate declined.
Crime is often used to scapegoat immigrants, and while those who commit crimes should be held accountable for their actions, we often turn to Matthew 25 to invoke a more humane outlook toward others: For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.
How we punish criminals, whether native-born or immigrant, is ultimately a reflection of our values and humanity. This video, then, is an ugly reflection. But it is one that we don't believe, even at this polarizing time, reflects the hearts and minds of voters.

(16,311 posts)Her bold rhetoric ultimately did not play well with voters. Gomez gained only 7.4 per cent of the vote with finishing sixth out of eight candidates in the race for Missouri Secretary of State.
Last week she announced that she was running for Congress in Texas and relocating to the state to challenge Republican congressman Dan Crenshaws seat. I dont fear pdfs, criminals, or the crooks in DC. I only fear God, she wrote in a post announcing the move.
She couldn't do squat in Missouri, so she's coming here to not do squat again. She hasn't got a chance in hell of unseating Crenshaw.

I propose we pull all our military installations, our space center in Houston, all our ail and ag subsidies, allow amnesty and immediate citizenship to all Texans who don't want to live under AbBUTT et al. and close the borders. See how long they can make it on their own without all those things and those people.

(23,726 posts)After the end of the Legislative session (6 months) there are always bills which according to the Texas Consitution require citizen approval before they can take effect. The need for approval varies, depending on what the bill is trying to accomplish.
SO we have this Constitutional Amendment Election in November of odd years, and if the voters reject any of them, that is the end of it. Some of them are really strange, and there is always a low turnout. The 2023 batch were actually really decent proposals which are going to do some good. There was a huge promotion for two of them which drew people to the polls.
Bluebelle76
