When Jimmy Carter slept at my in-laws' house.

On MSNBC they just mentioned that when he ran for president Carter ran such a cheap campaign he stayed on peoples’ couches. I’ve said this before, so forgive me, but he did indeed sleep at my in-laws’ home. They were pretty prominent Democrats in NC. It was before I was in the picture but knowing my father in law I expect they did, as the report said, talk into the night. We happen to have the bed he slept in now—sans mattress—and my grandsons sleep in it. Someday I’ll tell them about this remarkable man, one of the reasons I can still be proud of this fragile country.

Rest well, Good Man. You earned it.

I actually voted for Ford in 1976. This was one of my concerns. I voted for Carter in 1980. Reagan was a big "No" LeftInTX Dec 2024 #20

It was the only bedroom in the house on the same floor as my in-laws, and when we girlfriends visited we always had to sleep there to discourage “shenanigans.” 😄

Mine is when our military marched into Haiti. My son had actually called me from Guantanamo Bay to let me know his Special Forces Unit was going to war tomorrow there. But Jimmy was sent to intervene. Negotiations were successful and military action was minimal. One casualty. And he was in my son's unit. Thank you Mr President.

I was blessed in meeting Jimmy Carter when Habitat for Humanity built several homes in Milwaukee, 1989. Rosalynn was most amazing to me; she was working like crazy. There is still this video online from the project.

And isn't the 1976 Electoral Map breathtaking looking at where we are today?

The only clue about his feelings was that as governor of Georgia he had been invited to join the White Citizens Council and he declined. A whole lot of segregationists thought he was one of them. When he made that speech including that line about the time for discrimination being over, there was much buyers remorse among segregationists - and loud cheers and much laughter in the Black community - or so "The Root" suggests.

Yes, the flight of the Dixiecrats had not been total at that point. He didn't lie - he just didn't talk about it.
