On MSNBC they just mentioned that when he ran for president Carter ran such a cheap campaign he stayed on peoples couches. Ive said this before, so forgive me, but he did indeed sleep at my in-laws home. They were pretty prominent Democrats in NC. It was before I was in the picture but knowing my father in law I expect they did, as the report said, talk into the night. We happen to have the bed he slept in nowsans mattressand my grandsons sleep in it. Someday Ill tell them about this remarkable man, one of the reasons I can still be proud of this fragile country.
Rest well, Good Man. You earned it.

(6,681 posts)Mine is when our military marched into Haiti. My son had actually called me from Guantanamo Bay to let me know his Special Forces Unit was going to war tomorrow there. But Jimmy was sent to intervene. Negotiations were successful and military action was minimal. One casualty. And he was in my son's unit. Thank you Mr President.

(4,123 posts)I was blessed in meeting Jimmy Carter when Habitat for Humanity built several homes in Milwaukee, 1989. Rosalynn was most amazing to me; she was working like crazy. There is still this video online from the project.

(9,352 posts)The only clue about his feelings was that as governor of Georgia he had been invited to join the White Citizens Council and he declined. A whole lot of segregationists thought he was one of them. When he made that speech including that line about the time for discrimination being over, there was much buyers remorse among segregationists - and loud cheers and much laughter in the Black community - or so "The Root" suggests.

(9,352 posts)Yes, the flight of the Dixiecrats had not been total at that point. He didn't lie - he just didn't talk about it.
