and last New Years they went until the early morning hours
no worries, we'll get through this

(3,767 posts)Im not near a fireworks show. But heard some really loud ones. Heard a few gun shots. But a few of the pops were way more than fireworks or gunshots unless they were the big mortar like rounds used at a fireworks show. Im talking about within a block or so. It could be someone made something out of gunpowder and fired it off on the ground. Really not sure. There were 3 of those.

(34,771 posts)I can't complain. I like it. Plus it's free for me since we never pay for them. My son and in laws also bought some. They buy the expensive kind and it's a show. Just step outside and watch. Dozens of fireworks going off for hours. My in laws were even dog sitting. It sure beats going downtown.
We don't do Fourth of July fireworks here. It's too hot.

(34,771 posts)But my dad was also in the military and the only place we had home fireworks was Japan. I also lived in Seattle, NJ and Vandenberg in CA. No place to buy home fireworks.
My parents moved to San Antonio in 1977. That's where home fireworks was a thing.
Although white people had bought a few here and there, it was really was a Latino thing. My husband is Latino and we started dating in 1983. It was a big thing in his family. The city banned home fireworks when a girl died and they started a downtown show to replace home fireworks. My in-laws complained, "Our New Years is ruined". They complained that the ordinance was racist because home fireworks is part of the culture.
Over the years the ordinance was ignored.
This video is taken downtown. I can guarantee, that the overwhelming majority of people shooting off fireworks are Latino, because this part of town is 80% Latino.
My friend in Wisconsin said that home fireworks were now legal in Wisconsin.
Fireworks are a routine thing in Mexico.
We don't do Fourth of July fireworks. That's pretty much a white thing.
On Next Door, I see white people (mainly people who are new to SA ) complaining the most about home fireworks.

(7,183 posts)One advantage of being up on the 4th, Amarica, floor. Some looked like they were close to professional grade.
We can get ordinance that will go to 30 meters at the grocery stores. You can get bigger but you need to special order in the summer and they are delivered to you sometime on New Years Eve. They aren't cheap. Usually people in a neighborhood pool the cash.

(5,392 posts)They usually go on for at least an hour, and sometines til 2 or 3am. Tonight, it lasted 20 to 30 minutes tops, and there were no visual displays, just booms, whizzes, and pops. I have to say I am not surprised. 🫤

Part of the issue is risk of fire - NJ is the most densely populated state in the Union.
My cats were traumatized.

(4,370 posts)Up here in the hills near Vancouver, WA it was the quietest in, at least, 20 years. And the briefest. Ended around 10 pm.
