NEW ORLEANS At least 10 people are dead and 35 others hurt after a car plowed into a crowd at Bourbon and Iberville Streets in New Orleans on New Year's Day.
Sources say the suspect in the attack has been killed possibly by a New Orleans Police officer.
What we know about the New Year's Day attack in New Orleans
It happened around 3:15 a.m. toward the end of New Years celebrations in New Orleans and hours before the kickoff of the AllState Bowl, a college football quarterfinal held in the citys Caesars Superdome, with thousands expected to be in attendance.

Suspicious Devices
A Louisiana State Trooper flagged the suspicious device and called special units to investigate.
Mayor Latoya Cantrell called the incident a terrorist attack and said she had been in contact with the White House.
NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said a man drove a pickup around barricades and down Bourbon Street at a high rate of speed. "This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could," she said. "He was hellbent on creating the carnage that he did."
Additionally, two officers were shot, she said. Conditions of those officers were not immediately available.

(491 posts)Other than killing, terrorists' goals include making us so terrified that we huddle inside like cowards and don't get out and live life. Screw that. I'm free, I'll do what I want, and I'll accept the consequences like a grown up.

(40,365 posts)There is no specific warning that'll alert you.
But more to your point. The odds of you being in a crowd targeted by a mass shooter is pretty much zilch.
I avoid crowds not because I'm concerned about a shooter. I avoid them because I just don't like being around s bunch of people.

Please join Sharon and I in praying for all the victims and first responders on scene.
I urge all near the scene to avoid the area.

(7,078 posts)Because of Munich's history they do that already. Areas that are pedestrian have boolards. They bring in large concrete hex shaped flower pots to add safety for large events. When they close roads for events they have portable barricades that if hit by a vehicle dig into the pavement to stop them.

(53,994 posts)of homemade bombs. Makes you wonder if there is a broader plan by the crazies to let loose once the orange Fuhrer is installed. I've heard this attack referred to as a "terrorist attack" on the news, but is it a "domestic terrorist attack?" More than likely, I'd think.

(37,535 posts)has to do with a goal or motive to terrorize some group to cause them to submit or change.
Mentally ill? You're just crazy.
Furious at the universe because it's unjust? What, you're trying to terrorize God or whatever?
Look for agenda. You could be like the PR folk in the '50s that shot up the US House of Representatives, McVeigh in OK City, AQ and their plane attacks, there was some larger target and goal. The bombings in the late '60s and early '70s against the war or to try to foment revolution? Yeah. Shooting up a church in order to try to intimidate black Americans had a goal. Even shooting a CEO to send a message that corporate execs should be afraid and mend their evil ways is a goal. Going into a school and killing kids because they oppressed you because you're unlikeable? Going to campus and taking out your faculty because nobody'll supervise your thesis? Not terrorism, that's just rage at a group because you perceive they did you wrong and you want them to pay (and once they've paid, done). Going in and shooting up a school as an adult because the school did you wrong? That gets sketchier. If it was to teach those homophobes a lesson and make people aware of a societal issue then that crosses the line into it. Otherwise maybe just you're cracked.

Jim and Nicole Mowrer were in New Orleans visiting from Iowa and witnessed the incident. Nicole told CBS News they had watched the city's fireworks display and were enjoying the New Year's Day atmosphere in the French Quarter when they heard crashing noises coming from down the street. They said they then saw a white truck slam through a barricade "at a high rate of speed."
The Mowrers said they heard gunshots after the crashing noises and went to try to help people they found wounded, but realized the victims had died.
"We were pretty, pretty close to where it started," she said, estimating that the truck hit people only about a block away from where they had been walking.

"Once it was past us, we did hear gunfire, saw police running that direction," Nicole said. "Once the gunfire stopped, we stayed in the alcove until the gunfire stopped, came out into the street, and came across a lot of several people who had been hit, [we] wanted to see what we could do to help."
The Mowrers said the victims they saw had injuries from the truck impact, and they did not see any apparent gunshot wounds. They said they left the area once emergency responders started arriving.
