Update: suspect identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar. A US citizen with former military service who was apparently radicalized by ISIS. The FBI is now saying they do not think he was the solely responsible.
Per ABC News:
https://abcnews.go.com/US/1-dead-vehicle-strikes-crowd-new-orleans-police/story?id=117246329
Maybe it's similar to what took place in Germany?
Also, they're saying he seems to have caused the AirBNB he was staying in to catch fire as he left. Maybe an IED they're not saying for sure yet. It feels like they planned this for awhile and it could have even been worse.

(31,059 posts)After mowing down numerous people over a three-block stretch on the famed thoroughfare while firing shots into the crowd, the suspect allegedly got out of the truck wielding an assault rifle and opened fire on police officers, law enforcement officials briefed on the incident told ABC News. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect who was not immediately identified, sources said. At least two police officers were shot and wounded, authorities said.
Improvised explosive devices found in and around the scene on Bourbon Street were apparently found to be viable and investigators were looking for more in the city's French Quarter, multiple law enforcement sources tell ABC News. Investigators are working to determine whether the deceased suspect entered the country recently and whether he had a connection to ISIS, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

(10,661 posts)...which does not guarantee that he was from Texas. Maybe he stole the truck. But it wouldn't surprise me.

(20,051 posts)A white F150 would blend in as they're so common as fleet vehicles.
Then there's the "black flag" they're mentioning was being flown by the truck. I'm guessing that's why they're looking into ISIS connections.

(34,484 posts)If it's homegrown like the Boston Bombers, then it's considered "domestic".
There are alot of middle easterners in the Houston area.
They will need to research him to see if he had ties to international groups.
The main thing is to uncover any possible conspiracy.
However, most cases are "lone wolves" and are considered "domestic".

(20,630 posts)this morning. There's videos on the interwebs from NOLA about it.
My daughter graduated from Tulane in 2006. I've spent a lot of time in The Big Easy and have a trip planned in March.
My heart goes out to everyone in NOLA right now.

According to sources familiar with the investigation in New Orleans, the deceased suspect was wearing body armor

There's also a graphic image of the terrorist dead on the ground wearing fatigues (that I won't post).

(31,059 posts)UPDATE coming soon from authorities ⬇️
Sources now tell FOX - the truck crossed Eagle Pass, TX on November 16th -- not two days ago. The identification of driver that crossed border does not appear to be the shooter. The truck changed hands at some point.

(8,552 posts)by shifting the focus away from the kind of violence he and his acolytes via their own rhetoric, have either encouraged or ABIDED by.
This terrorist was a citizen who was an honourably discharged army veteran. So it remains to be seen whether this is isis, border related, or even foreign related.
Lest we forget, over the last four years, the FBI has busted (as in thwarted) several terrorist attacks that were being planned by domestic terrorists.
Latest word out is the FBI suspects others were involved. Remains to be seen who's behind it.

(34,484 posts)The truck used in the attack, a white Ford F-150 Lightning electric vehicle, is owned by Rodrigo Diaz, per ABC News.
Diaz apparently rented out the truck on the rental app Turo.
His wife Dora Diaz told ABC they are 'devastated' and had no idea the truck would be used for a terrorist attack.
'My husband rents cars through the Turo app. I cant tell you anything else. Im here with my kids, and this is devastating,' Diaz said.

(3,106 posts)much conflicting information right now. Other credible sources called him a US military veteran just an hour ago.
Also lots of rampant rumors flying around that 4-5 other accomplices may have been involved.
I'm going to have to sit back and ignore all of it for a few days until the media gossip settles down a bit.

(1,527 posts)First, where is his family from? Specifically, did his family originate from outside the US (e.g. a relative such as grandfather)? He might have been born and raised in Texas, but he might have family members that originated from elsewhere. Were any of his family members a member/follower of IS? A lot of African American people that are born in the US are Muslim. But again, he did have prior history of misdemeanor theft and driving without a valid license. I don't know how that leads to things.
